Park hopper plus question

You can only upgrade to a pass with more days on it. IE: if you have a 4 day and want another day, you need to upgrade to a 5 day.

Mary Waring covers this topic on her website www.mousesavers.com , as follows:

"Another important thing to know: you can apply the value of an unused pass, or even a partially used one with days left on it, toward the purchase of a higher-priced pass. For instance, if you buy a 4-Day Park Hopper and then decide (within 7 days of first use) that you'd rather have an Annual Pass, you can apply any remaining value on the Park Hopper toward the Annual Pass. A pass with "plus" options on it can normally only be applied to another pass that also includes "plus" options, such as a Park Hopper PLUS or a Premium Annual Pass.

The value of a partially used pass will be pro-rated in calculating how much of a credit you'll get. Old passes purchased at a lower price -- and discounted passes, such as those sold to military personnel -- will be credited at the actual rates you paid. Yes, Disney can tell how much you paid. It's encoded on the pass. For that reason it's usually a better idea just to use up the remaining days on old or discounted passes.

To upgrade a pass, go to any Guest Services window."

Did that answer your question?

Even better, just trade them in towards one that has more days, they will give you the value of the pass you now have towards the new one. You will just pay the difference.

:teeth: Yes, that's exactly what I was wanting to know, Kbhehl.:) Thanks so much!:) Hmmm, I wonder if I could convince my SO we need to go to WDW a few more times in the next year or so, and just upgrade to an annual pass when we get there.:teeth:

Gail,

I've never traded-up myself, but have read a number of posts on the topic. Some people claim htat you don't get the "value" of the pass you are trading in, rather you get the actual purchase price. Do you know if this is correct?

It may make quite a difference if you purchased at a reduced price from a third-party broker, and then want to upgrade at WDW.

Example: Florida Orlando Tickets sells the 5 day PHP for $254 adult. The 6 day PHP is $318 at the gate. I assume advance purchase and DC discounts would not apply on the upgrade since it's being purchased at the gate.

In the above example, the net upgrade cost is $64 per pass. You'd be better off paying the $55 for a one day, one park, assuming that you can find a day when park hopping is not required during your stay.

Anyone see problems with my logic?

Tjkraz, that's a good point. I got our passes at a discounted Disney Club rate. I'll have to find out the price difference for all the passes. Thanks for pointing that out.:)

If a pass is unused and it was not purchased directly from Disney, you will be credited an amount that is actually less than you paid for that original pass when you turn it in for the upgrade. All of the relevant info is encoded in the magnetic strip on the back of the ticket.

Here is some info from WDWIG that relates to the question:

IMPORTANT NOTE: if you purchased your tickets from a non-Disney source (AAA, independent ticket broker, etc), you will NOT get full credit for the price you paid when you upgrade. Disney sells these tickets at a discounted wholesale price and the companies add in an amount for their profit before selling them to the public. Disney will only give you credit for the wholesale price that they sold the ticket to the company. They WILL NOT credit you for any profit or shipping and handling charges that those companies added onto the price.

Applying the credit from old passes can only be done at a Guest Relations location at one of the major parks or at either of the two Guest Relations offices at Downtown Disney or at Guest Services at your resort.
