My 9 year old is planning to carry her own bag in the parks for the first time for our late March trip. Mostly because she wants to be able to carry her own bottle of water with her at all times. She will probably also carry her autograph book and sunglasses. What kind of bag has worked well for your big kids?

My daughter uses a red canvas drawstring backpack that I bought at Hobby Lobby. I appliqued a chevron Minnie Mouse head on it, and it is really cute. She didn't want anything bulky, just a small lightweight bag to throw a few items in.

I agree with AllieBoo - drawstring backpack has been our DS's choice once he started taking his own bag.

drawstring backpack is a good choice but if you are going to have a bottle of water and autograph book I would get a large ziploc bag to protect the book

My kids carry string backpacks in the parks, we either wrap the water bottle in a towel so it doesn't get the bag wet or keep things we don't want to get wet in ziploks. They used to use cheapo string bags we got on amazon. But since they use string bags for sports now, they have UA and Nike bags that have a water bottle pouch on the outside. If your kiddo will use the bag outside the parks, keep an eye out for a sale for the UA or Nike bags, even Lands End has a nice string bag!

or keep things we don't want to get wet in ziploks.

Good thinking. Ziplocs are an absolute must have for me at WDW. Very useful for things like wallets and cell phones if you want to go on a ride that may get you significantly wet or encounter some serious downpours.

My kids use these Quechua mini backpacks from Amazon: http://a.co/6bo3HbM

They are cheap, well made, and come in many colors. Since we instituted the "if you want to bring it or keep it, it's your responsibility" rule, my wife and I find we can often go bagless, or at least not feel like pack mules.

My kids and niece use either a string bag or a mid size cross body bag, the cross body bag is a bit more convenient for grabbing items quickly so my older dd prefers that. I recommend a bag with a flat strap vs the strings as the thin string will dig into the shoulder when worn all day, especially when packed with heavier items like water.

In addition to the zip lock recommendation above we also bring quart or sandwich size for phones on water rides!

It took some searching but we found string bags with straps and some of them sold at Disney do have flat straps (the ones with the year on them do!).
