We're thinking of going to France this summer. I have been to Paris before, but don't remember a lot of it. Where IN Paris would you choose to stay; basically, what arrondissement? DH has never been to Paris, so we will want to do "touristy" things but would like a location that's safe enough for walking around (I know, it's a city, I've lived in Boston and San Francisco), has a convenient metro stop within several blocks, nearby cute cafes/food shops. I'm considering airbnb or vrbo but am not sure where to look. I have found a very tiny place just off Rue Clar but I'm not sure of the area or if there is something else more interesting to consider! TIA (and I'll cross-post this on the Disney-Paris board, too).

No help from me here on your question, leebee. Sounds like you guys will have a nice trip.

You did however, give me my new word for the day. If it's a new word for me, I look them up. You'll find a good arrondissement.

I've stayed near the Louvre, near Montmartre, and near the Eiffel tower and have felt safe walking around in all of those areas.

I highly recommend the Astotel chain of small boutique hotels. Between my sister and I we've stayed at three different ones (Malte, Joke, and George). The Malte is more expensive, but in a great and very convenient location and the breakfast is great (well worth the price when booked with the room).

We always stay in the 11th Arrondissment. We like staying out of the touristy areas and having more of the feeling that we live there. I chose the Charronne metro stop because it has an escalator to take you up out of the station, and when dragging suitcases, or your tired body around all day, it's nice not to have to climb a bunch of stairs. Paris is just one staircase after another.

A few years ago we stayed at this hotel and we loved it.

It's close to everything: the opera, the Louvre, the Seine, etc
An insane amount of good restaurants are nearby (my favorite one in the world, right across the street - Villa Dondelli)
Creperies, Brasseries, Boulangeries, it's just mind boggling.
The hotel is not cheap (we paid about $250/night in November - low season). It'll be very expensive in the Summer.
And it's not even a 4 star hotel. It's just clean, the rooms are cute, and very small. But you are paying premium because of the location. It's so close to everything. restaurants, museums, attractions, etc.
Super recommended.
Looking at it on the map and the places we went when we stayed there gave me huge nostalgia. I wish I could go again sometime soon.
