Hello! I tried searching for an answer, as I'm sure this has been answered, but I couldn't find anything.

My parents are considering purchasing DVC. If they do, can I use their points? Would the reservation be in their name or mine? Would they have to make all the reservations or could I do it? They like Disney, but they also said that they would really be buying into DVC so we could use it.

TIA! :goodvibes

You can be listed as an associate on their membership and that would allow you to call MS on your own to make/change reservations but the member discounts (if any) do not extend to you if I recall correctly unless you are traveling with them (either staying in their villa or in a separate villa); if you were traveling with your parents as their guest ( as my 3 kids do ) then you would be eligible for dining or shopping discounts etc. I think your parents can purchase an annual pass at discounted DVC rate for you if you reside at the same address as they do but they would have to present their blue Membership Card to do so, a Membership Card would not be issued to you even if you are listed as an associate on their DVC membership.

Hope this helped some.

You can have your parents list you as an owner on the contract that way you will have all of the benefits of a member. We just bought DVC with my parents and they and my spouse and I are listed as owners. This also takes care of having to put the contract in a will.

It would depend on whether your parents add your name to the deed. Or they could just list you as an associate member on their DVC membership. Here's the rules regarding associates.

Types of Club Members and Who Can Make a Reservation.
1) A "Purchaser" is any person who is named on the deed conveying the Ownership Interest. Purchasers are also referred to as “Club Members”. The Primary Purchaser is the first person named on the deed. All financial information pertaining to the membership, including Annual Dues statements and Form 1098 (reporting mortgage interest), will be mailed to the Primary Purchaser. To designate a different Primary Purchaser, to receive the financial information mailings, a request must be submitted to Membership Administration and must be signed by all Purchasers. All Purchasers have equal ownership rights and all Purchasers receive Member Cards.

2) An "Associate" is a person named by the Purchaser or Purchasers who is only authorized to bank, borrow and make reservations using the Club Member’s Home Resort Vacation Points. Associates do not receive Member Cards and are not entitled to the benefits and privileges that are available to a Club Member. In addition, Associates may not access financial information related to Annual Dues and/or loan pertaining to the membership.
Associates are subject to all the rules and regulations to which Club Members are subject, including, without limitation, the prohibition of the use of Vacation Accommodations for commercial purposes. Associates are also subject to the following:
a. Associates may only be Associates for a maximum of four (4) Memberships. b. The adding of an Associate to a Club Member’s account is subject to the sole and absolute discretion of DVCMC. c. An Associate can be removed from a Club Member’s account, by DVCMC in its sole and absolute discretion, for violating Disney Vacation Club rules.

Depending on how old you are (don't tell me, I'm not asking) and whether or not you have siblings, one option would be to include you on the deeds and purchase documents. This has upsdide and downside:

1) It's great for estate planning and future transition of the ownership. No work to be done.
2) You get all the benefits and rights due a member
3) You get all the liability due a member (equal owner in Disney's eyes)
4) You'll have a membership card (see #2)

We just went through the process of adding my wife and I to my parents contracts. They bought in 1999 and added on in 2000 or 2001. For estate planning purposes they added us to the deeds. It cost us $78 in filing fees with Orange County. Cost various based on if you prepare the paperwork or if an attorney does. It's a real estate ownership so not as simple as just calling to make a change with Disney.

Was just reading this thread and a question popped into my mind along the same lines as the OP's question. Although my kids are not old enough to travel on their own yet, my DS will be in just a couple of years. Can I make a reservation for him and his friends to stay on our points without us being there? Or would my DH or I have to be along for the trip? DS is a Disney Freak and I know he would love to show some of his buddies around the World and honestly didn't even think about that until reading this thread. Thanks.:goodvibes

As long as your DS is at least 18 years old, you do not need to be there. (18 is the minimum to check in on our own).

You would make the reservation in his name and his friends traveling with him would also be listed on the reservation.

Wow! Thank you for all the quick and great responses! It would be wonderful to be listed as an owner. My husband is an attorney, so he could prepare any documents that were necessary. I'll have to share all of this information with my parents. :)

Thanks for the quick reply as well. He will be 18 in 14 short months! It is something to think about for certain. I know he would LOVE to show his friends around. Only a couple of them have been to Disney and it was when they were very young. They always want to come along with us so I think they would be equally as excited. Thanks again. :goodvibes

Can minors be listed as co-owners? Our kids are 14 and 17 at the moment. So they won't be minors for too much longer.

If your parents don't want to list you on your contract and you are not a minor, they can make reservations in your name whenever you like. However, if you are not listed as an owner, they will have to contact DVC Member Services in your stead.

I realized a few weeks after we got home and had purchased BLT, June 2010, that I should have at that time put our two sons on the purchase. In the next few months plan to have them added. I have already told them both it is theirs to use when ever they want. The wife and I plan we will use it for the most part for the next ten or so years then it is theirs for the next 40 years. Thou we will most likely be paying the annual dues.

You could, now, add them as Associate Memebers so they can book reservations and use the membership. They won't be eligible for member discounts or perks, but at least have access. If you do a thread search for transferring membership, you'll find a lot of instruction on how to prepare the quit claim deeds yourself if you don't want to pay an attorney to do them. You'll even find a member who has templates he's usually willing to share if you PM him. It's an incredibly simple process if you don't mind putting the time and effort it. We chose not to because I have a legal plan through work that made it "free" (other than the monthly premium I pay). I wanted to feel like I was getting something out of that benefit.

I don't think we'll be so lucky to get my parents to pay the annual dues for us though, but if you can convince them I'd appreciate it :worship:.

We are associate members, my in-laws are the owners. We did not receive membership cards. But when we stayed in January (and we expect when we stay again THIS weekend), our key said DVC Member, which gave us the current perks as listed in the pamphlet for the week/month, whichever it was.

I thought people who rented points also had that happen since a member made the reservation.

In Jan., MIL made the reservation. For this one, I made it. But I still don't think it will be any different.

I don't know what they are planning to do will-wise, DH has a brother. Or if they told us, I've forgotten.

Just so you know, sometimes they also ask to see the blue DVC membership card, along with the KTTW card, when you are asking for the discounts.

Technically, only the owners are entitled to all the perks, but as you said, there are times when just showing the KTTW card with DVC member on it is enough.

Yeah, at Raglan Road, we just said, "Can we use this here?" and showed our key. She said sure and we got the discount. But from the looks of the restaurant (not crowded) they need to do what they can to get people to keep coming. What's 10%? (or even 20%)

If it's ever a problem, we won't make a big deal, but it's always worth a try....

dvc is an real estate an asset.

so if your family member that you added as a co-owner declares bankuptcy and he needs his part in cash. You might be forced to sell your DVC,

so be aware of all the legal stuff - but hey your husband a lawyer so you don't need to hire one.

My DD just graduated from high school and her and 3 girlfriends are using our points! My DD is not 18 but her friend is so the ressie was made in her friends name. We just joined dvc recently but have been going to disney since DD was born so that is where she wanted to go before college. I had to laugh when she called me on Saturday with so much excitement stating "We have a balcony mom this is soooo cool" Of course I replied "yup I arranged that just for you"
