Pantry Clean Out!

Soup and stew!! It is a great way to use up bits and pieces from the fridge, freezer, and pantry, and super comforting when the it storming outside!! Plus you can make it in the crockpot! Good luck and stay safe during the bad weather! It looks like I will only be getting a brush from that storm........P

I hit the store yesterday and got bread, milk, cheese etc. Might go back out tomorrow and pick up some meats.

We did the soup thing already a lot last week and the kids are sick of it. Last night was grilled cheese sandwiches. Not sure about tonight since we have fencing and a PTO meeting. It might be breakfast for dinner.

I"m making cauliflower hash with eggs tonight.... so perhaps it is a breakfast-for-dinner for many of us! But it is confirmed..... I cannot ever adopt your kids.... because we eat soup here at least three nights a week during the cold months! They would starve! I am actually really grateful that my family shares my love of soups and stews! That being said, I had my first complete and utter soup failure over the weekend. Not sure if the recipe was wrong or if it just isn't something we like..... but for the first time in recent memory I threw away an entire pot of food! I tried to tweak it and change it and water it down etc, but it was just plain yucky! I made sure to comment on it on Pinterest so I don't accidentally pin it again!................P

Yesterday was a good day.

Breakfast: Scrambled eggs and chocolate milk for all
Lunch: Packed lunch for son (including a new food that I packed, he told me he didn't like it but that he ate all of it because that was our deal #winning), the rest of the leftover pasta salad for myself, rest of the leftover turkey pot pie for hubs, almond butter sandwich and grapes for daughter
Dinner: Made another new-to-us recipe, 20 minute cheesy enchilada soup, it tasted exactly like the tortilla soup at Chili's!! http://www.gimmesomeoven.com/cheesy-chicken-enchilada-soup-recipe/ Too spicy for the kids so they had corn dogs and oranges or grapes.

The only leftovers in my fridge are last night's soup and lots of white space is starting to pop up in my pantry. The best part is neither of those things are from having to throw stuff away. Feeling good about that!

Today is my son's birthday so the hubs and I already agreed that we can do his favorite (McDonald's #blech) for dinner. He hasn't been allowed to have it since New Year's, so we are going to surprise him with it :

I laughed so hard when I read this because you say bits an pieces from the fridge and I know you mean like any normal person carrots, celery, left over chicken etc.

Well my mom tells a story about when she and my dad first married my grandma (my mom's mother in law) invited them over for soup as she had made a clean the fridge soup. My mom was really excited til she discovered my grandma (rest her soul she was a great lady) was really a crazy/bad cook and the soup included some leftover potato salad. Like she put everything in this soup! My grandma passed away when I was 20 and I think in all those years I ate her cooking twice lol....but she did teach me to bowl so I'll take it!

Had another low week last week. How did you all do lately?? Did about 4 nights on $20 or so again. This week I'll have a bit more even after a low moment ordering pizza tonight. Do have a lot but enough to do a decent full week. But we have some leftovers too. Pizza and goulash. Plus some chicken alfredo from Wednesday. I have a lb of 93% lean beef already. I can see us doing tacos because I still have some corn tortillas. I'll spend part of my morning meal planning and making my list for the grocery shopping.

Question for those in the know...we were given a large 15ish pound turkey I want to finally cook it Saturday morning when I have nothing else on my agenda...when should I take it out of the freezer...It will take up a lot of room in our fridge so I don't want it out sooner than it has to be...

Yep 2-3 days to thaw in fridge. I've done the cold bath thaw method before and didn't get sick. :)

:teeth: YUCK I can deal with adding stuff but that is a bit over the top. lol But a lot of folks that age grew up to use out every bit of something and be very frugal so they might be used to eating that way. My ex mother in law did 3 day chili where they added stuff I guess that is how people come to find that mixing meats was soo yummy in chili. My brother likes turkey, sausage and beef in his.

Well.... once again we hit the end of the MONEY before the end of the MONTH, so I have been diligently making some "amazing" pantry creations this week! Just another two days and we will be able to restock. To look on the bright side, without any grocery money left, at least I didn't have to dedicate half a day this weekend to shopping and restocking the pantry! I did swing by a local market for a bit of milk and a dozen eggs to get us through the weekend.... cash came from my personal savings.

Last night I pulled out (of the freezer) a half pound of diced ham and a few frozen deli cheese ends..... chopped those as well. Baked two potatoes for DS and a spaghetti squash for DH and I .... topped DS's potato and DH's spaghetti squash with broccoli and the ham and cheese. They loved it! Of course, we ate late and they were starving, so that probably helped! Made lunch for myself earlier this week with the last of the batch of dried beans I cooked at the end of last week, so cooking more beans today. Will use those to make a bean soup for DH and I for dinner tonight and lunches this week.... will probably use the last of the carrots and celery and onions in the soup as well. And if there are enough beans, I will probably cook some brown rice and portion out some rice and beans for lunches (for myself) as well.

DS's girlfriend will be over visiting at some point this weekend and I will probably feed the two of them pasta.... not too exciting, but she is TEENY-TINY and eats very little. A half pound of pasta with some sauce and a bit of protein will be more than enough for the two of them. Because I'm a WW and DH follows a low carb diet, we don't eat much pasta, but I always grab a box or two from the dent-and-ding shelf at the market to have on hand. I should be able to do dinner for DS and his friend for about $3.... sauce is frozen from our garden last year, pasta is whole wheat store brand from the damage shelf and I'll probably toss in some veggie crumbles for protein.

We WILL make it through the month and definitely have the benefit of a small pantry clean out as well! Hope everyone else is enjoying the empty space in their pantries right now!........P

You just make me want to come to Australia!

You should definitely come some day - with our dollar doing so badly against the USD it should be good value for you lol. Only downside is we don't have a Disneyland!

Does anyone else feel like this is making them a much more creative cook? With trying to use up stuff we already have I'm thinking of new ways/ideas to make it work.

Yes a little more creative - but I am just really enjoying the focus on being more thoughtful with using what we have - after hints from you guys the other night we had leftovers and there was only enough for smallish portions for each of us but we still used it and then I cut up some fruit and told them all to 'top up' with that. Added bonus - I don't tend to eat a lot of fruit myself but make sure the kids do so I have been having some fruit also :-)

Like I almost threw in the towel this morning and said we are getting fast food...but nope I pulled it together and tonight will be chili.

Glad to hear you persevered - that idea of easy fast food is still tempting isn't it?

I've been super busy recently so I haven't posted. But I've been pretty good keeping budget! I'm glad to see everyone is holding up well. We all need to give in here and there- especially when life gets hectic. But I think this post really helps all of us keep our eyes on the prize!

Glad to hear you are doing well and on budget. I agree we need to not be too hard on ourselves as we all do lead hectic lives these days - I just don't want to slip into my hold habit of not shopping properly and then saying oh well its easier to grab take out for several nights in a row at times. This post is definitely helping me.

Well.... once again we hit the end of the MONEY before the end of the MONTH,

Yes I know this feeling - I decided to do a Costco trip to grab some back to school food for the kids but this meant I blew the grocery budget for this month before it was over. I am justifying saying most of it will be used in February lol.

Well we have had some hits and misses so far this week - had take out twice once for dinner and once for lunch. But breakfasts we are doing really well having bagels, toast, eggs (all different ways), bacon.

So Thursday night had take out instead of the planned leftovers :(
Friday - was meant to be Pork Roast - but the oldest son was off at a mates place for the night and I knew he would really want it - so we had toasted sandwiches instead.
Saturday - Had the Pork Roast - which was good except that I felt really ill straight after eating (no I didn't poison myself lol as all the kids were fine) but this meant the kitchen was left and my kiddos took advantage of me not telling them to get straight to cleaning up and left it till this morning  when I realised no-one had gotten to putting the left over pork into the fridge! So pretty much we threw $10 in the bin this morning :sad2:
Sunday - So now tonight will do the chicken and fried rice instead.

Be interesting to see how well we keep going when I get back to work and the kids back to school this week.

For any of you in the big winter storm we are seeing on the news hope you are all well stocked, warm and safe :D

We are doing pretty well using what we have on hand :) We made a Costco run yesterday as we were out of quite a few ingredients that I cook with on a regular basis. (canned diced tomatoes, chicken broth, pasta, ground beef) We are switching back to eating mostly organic and non-gmo here, but I will still slowly make and eat some of the stuff we have in the pantry non organic so as not to waste the food or money. Thankfully, we already have done a good job at eating at home that there really isn't a whole lot left!

Last week I met the hubby for lunch, which we rarely get to do anymore. It had to be quick so we settled on Wendy's. Big mistake! I immediately regretted it! I just felt bleh from it! Good lesson that eating and cooking at home is so much better!

While I have been using items from the pantry/freezer I'm not seeing enough progress. We were REALLY overstocked. Going to dig in here and make a very pared down grocery budget for this week and next and see what I can get eaten! Going to shoot for under $50 both weeks. That should cover fresh produce, bread and milk.
I made stuffed shells and salad last night, which kids had for lunch today and I finished the salad. I pulled some leftover veggie chili from the freezer for tonight, tomorrow is veggie burgers and sweet potato fries, Tuesday is a tray of enchiladas from the freezer with some frozen veg. , and I'll make some broccoli cheese soup I've been meaning to do probably for Wednesday and some pizza dough for Calzones /pizza/homemade hot pockets. That's as far as I've gotten but I know we have at least two nights of leftovers, fend for yourself, or something like breakfast-for dinner.

Edited to add I spent $48.78 at the store. Yikes! Thought I would have more leftover for a midweek stop in.Mostly fresh fruit and veg, one pack of rolls, eggs and some tofu for lettuce wraps. Here's hoping I can make it last!!

Looks like I'm adding a mouth into the grocery budget as we will be hosting my friends 13 year old for the rest of the school year I think. His mom enrolling him into a charter school that buses to either of us. But I have a feeling my brother is having him stay with us. He isn't a huge eater but he likes his junk(ice cream and expensive snacks...well he can have his mom buy and drop some of that stuff for him LOL). I'm used to feeding him anyway because last semester he was home but had four day school week. He was here Thursday night to Sunday night. Not much will change. But if he thinks I'll keep him stocked in Mt Dew and ice cream he's got another thing coming his way. He was supposed to finish the year with his dad but his step mom and him just couldn't work differences out and his mommy went to rescue him.

Pantry, freezer and fridge are fairly bare. I'll get to planning next weeks meals and start my grocery list tomorrow afternoon. Pizza night tomorrow so I get a night off cooking. I hear my brother is buying probably little caesars.

Finished off our stuff from last week. I made the whole chicken Monday had baked potato myself with a chicken sandwich forgot to cook some carrots so we had some sanck chips left from weekend, bad carb loaded dinner. LOL Tuesday had tacos. Wednesday left over goulash I freshed up with new tomatoes. Tonight I used the rest of the chicken(was a bit less left than I was thinking would be) and made chicken noodle soup from scratch(noodles included).

Well.... for intended and unintended reasons, my pantry got a decent clean out this month! I guess that's what happens when you make a tuition payment, buy new tires, get a heating oil delivery, and celebrate Christmas, all within a 4 week period of time! YIKES! But we made it to a new pay month without starving!

The pantry/dry goods took a hit, but fortunately I got a few practical Christmas gifts (organic BPA-free canned tomatoes and organic soup anyone??) and had hit a few good sales in November/early December that helped us make it through. Plus being soup/stew weather helped (gotta love bean soup and lentil soup to help stttrrreeettcchhh the budget!). Many of our meals were VERY modest (baked potatoes with cheese, egg sandwiches, the aforementioned bean soup), but that certainly wasn't a problem. But the fresh stuff that I have NOT been able to buy has been VERY missed.... can't wait to hit the produce department today!! MMMM.... apples, bananas, grapefruit, spinach.

What's left? Well, with just a quick look I'll say (in the pantry... btw, I store most of my dry goods in large glass jars like the size of a large jar of mayo).... 5 boxes of whole wheat pasta (we don't eat it often), half large jar of brown rice, half jar of steel cut oats, 8 cans of various tomato products, 2 can of organic corn, 1 can of chipotle peppers, full jar of quinoa (plus a back-up bag), full jar of millet, half jar of pearl barley, half jar of yellow lentils, 1 box of taco shells, three containers of various organic soups, half a large canister of old-fashioned oats, half a container of raisins, half a container of dried apricots, a can of cranberry sauce (??... where did that come from??) and various cooking/baking supplies (whole wheat flour, a bit of sugar, bread crumbs, etc).

In the freezer I am down to one package of uncooked ground beef, one oven roast (I usually slice it up for things like stir-fry), two 3 lb. pork loins, one large container of homemade broccoli cheddar soup (will probably pull that out for a dinner over the weekend), a few containers of homemade rhubarb sauce (to add to things like muffins and greek yogurt), one pan of homemade layered ratatouille I made in the fall (will pull that out for another meal this weekend), about 3 5-cup containers of homemade vegetable stock, 2 5-cup containers of homemade chicken stock, 1 large jar of beef bone broth, 2 single-serve containers of homemade chicken soup, 1 single-serve container of homemade lentil soup, 3 large jars of homemade spaghetti sauce, a few various assorted bags of frozen fruits (store bought) and veggies (homegrown), one frozen pizza, two half-loaves of bread (one white, one wheat.... DS is the only one that eats it so I keep it frozen and only take out what he needs) one package of Boca burgers and a few "bits and pieces" of things that I've frozen along the way (2 Tb. of tomato paste, half package of cream cheese, bread crumbs and cracker crumbs to save for meatloaf).

Wowza.... in looking at that list it doesn't seem so pathetic! I suppose most folks who are living lean would consider that a pretty good food supply. Perhaps now that I"ve seen that I will challenge myself a bit more and only buy produce and dairy today. I think I'm feeling like I've been doing without because I'm used to eating 3-4 pieces of fruit daily PLUS fresh veggies with almost every meal and we haven't been able to do that. In fact, I've been rationing out the last of the apples and carrots just so that I would make it to February with at least an apple a day for my lunches.

I also need to consider using up some more of my freezer supplies so that I can get the downstairs freezer defrosted and cleaned before next summer when the fresh garden produce starts coming in again!

Time to take this list and make a PLAN to use up a bit more and THEN make my shopping list! TTY soon...............P

Okay.... back from the market and (get this)....... $316 poorer! YIKES! How did I do that? Well.... about $60 of meat plus dairy, produce and a lot of staples we've been without (lentils, nuts, popcorn, dried beans, couscous, low carb bread). But I think my money was well spent.... all of the meat was on sale AND on "manager's special" markdown (large roast is getting diced up for stew meat.... it was nearly $2/lb cheaper than actually buying stew beef!). Onions and peppers from the markdown rack will get diced and roasted today and put into the freezer for another day. Cucumbers from the markdown rack will get scrubbed and sliced and frozen for smoothies.

It was a lot of money to spend, but I'm DILIGENT about not EVER wasting food. And some of it was to bring to my college DD tomorrow.

I pulled out the broccoli cheddar soup for the men to have tomorrow while I"m gone to visit DD. I'll pull out one of the frozen jars of spaghetti sauce for next week to have with a new vegetarian meatball recipe I'm going to try.......the single serve soups are for work day lunches, so they will be gone by the end of the week (I may even bring the one jar of chicken soup to DD tomorrow). I bought a bit more ground beef to make a meatloaf to use up those crumbs and the tomato paste and I'll serve that with the layered ratatouille I pulled out as well (that emptied a BIG spot in my freezer!).

Also bought some marked down cheese I will use to make a healthier mac and cheese for DS later this week... that is a rare treat in our house!

Anyhow.... hope you all are doing well with the pantry clean out as well! Thanks for the inspiration from you all!........................P

Wow, I feel like I've been gone for such a long time. I think it was actually only a week, but I've missed checking in with everyone. My parents were in town to celebrate my son's birthday (and visit us in general) so I took a timeout from the computer. While I immensely enjoyed having them here (they live over 700 miles away) we went out to eat far more than I had anticipated. We weren't allowed to pay for any of the meals, so it didn't affect our grocery budget, but it definitely made a change in my waistline. Yowza, my pants are tighter than what is deemed appropriate at the moment!

Oh, yeah, and they went to the grocery store to stock up our "empty" pantry and fridge. We did not ask them to do this and, in fact, were not aware that it was being done until they came back to the house with a trunk full of groceries. Looks like I will be doing another pantry challenge in the month of February ;)

On the agenda for the weekend: Organizing the pantry, organizing the fridge, inventory of both, organizing the freezer and (possibly) pulling some more meats from the deep freeze to the indoor freezer, meal planning for the upcoming week.

Does anybody else have any pantry challenge related weekend plans?

You guys ROCK!! WOW I am in shock at how well you guys use those pantry/freezers/fridges. I need to follow this thread. I am a grocery shopping meal planning failure. LOL We spend WAY TOO MUCH, eat out WAY TOO MUCH and don't eat at home ENOUGH.

Keep trying. I was a failure for so long. But have been doing really well planning out meals so I make the list and keep to it with minimal additions. Save a lot.

A big bill can be good. Will that meat last a long time? Stuff like that matters. I'd love to get where I can go to the grass fed farm a few miles north of us and buy huge packs(probably would require a deep freezer) that contain a mixutre of meats, eggs and honey. And then get csa produce baskets. You hit it on the head with never letting it waste. I've thrown out so many leftovers but have gotten to where I'll freeze them knowing we probably won't want that again so soon. This week I have kids wanting certain treat desserts and I said we will have to eat leftovers.

Ok so end of our first week being back to school :teacher: and work :surfweb: after our summer holidays :beach: and ....... I have failed terribly for dinners :sad2: The kids have taken lunch from home each day - it is typical for kids here to take their lunches - we don't have school cafeteria's like you guys do but we do have what are called 'tuckshops' that the kids can buy food from I suppose they are kind of like a café of sorts that sell a range of quick service type foods. I have also done well with lunches taking it from home each day.

School didn't start until Wednesday so 3 days this week - so here is the confession:

Wednesday - I had totally forgotten to plan and take the meat out of the freezer - so after hockey fitness training for the 2 boys (5-6pm) we grabbed McDonalds on the way home
Thursday - my oldest boy got a part-time job this week Yeah! and he had induction training from 4.30-7.30pm his sister and I did his paper route delivery (6-7pm) then it just seemed easier to grab dinner at the shops when we picked him up - Mexican o_O
Friday - I have had a super busy start to work - no air-conditioning in my office and it has been SUPER HOT and humid here the last few days with us also getting storms from the heat. So heat and busyness meant that I left work at 4pm feeling totally blaah and headache starting and no motivation to cook anything! So takeout pizza it was after picking up the kids from my parents  I fell asleep on the couch between 5.30-6pm my daughter woke me at 8.30 to tell me she was going to bed so I joined her :rolleyes1.

I have this afternoon worked out the dinners for the next week and will do a shop tomorrow for things we need for those and breakfast/lunches - so am aiming to have a better week this week :P I'm going to try pre-cooking a few things tomorrow and doing a crock-pot meal on Monday.

Oh and another good thing my daughter the queen of wanting take-out told me the other day that she has been liking our eating at home more and said we had been eating yummy food :flower1:

Hope you all have a good week.
