Panic Buying!

I went shopping today and it did not appear that anyone was doing panic shopping. I did finally see lysol wipes on the shelf and bought one. I have 2 airplane trips to Disney this year and need to wipe down the seats etc. DH has been a bit on the toilet paper buying train for past couple of weeks. I finally had to tell him no more for now. The shelves in my area still have lots of toilet paper and paper towels. However, no hand sanitizer to be found. I need to up my wine inventory though.

I do commercial flooring and the places we get our safety gloves and glasses and dust mask from are all on back order

Our janitorial supplier told us more than a month ago that sanitizer, wipes, masks, etc orders would have limited availability with priority given to health care providers. Luckily we already had a supply.

The thing I wonder about is the bottled water. Why are people stocking up on water - are they afraid their utilities are going to cut off? Kroger was almost totally out of water.

I use gallon jugs of water to add dental stuff to for my cats. I normally buy two at a time, then two more after I've used those, etc. I got one extra, just in case we end up being asked to quarantine around here. I also bought an extra jug of distilled water for DH's CPAP machine.

The thing I'm having trouble finding is travel packs of hand sanitizing wipes. I normally carry a pack in my bag when I watch my niece and nephew. - Gotta wash hands before snacks at the playground, you know!

I wanted a couple of extra because we're supposed to be traveling soon, and they were wiped out (no pun intended) at both grocery stores around here. :scared: - I ended up buying a couple of the bigger plastic containers that I normally keep in the bathrooms to wipe off the counters and stuff. I figure I can put some in a baggie if I need to (not for hand washing, of course, but for tray tables and the like.)

the toilet paper situation was explained to me the other day. the people that are panicking are stocking up because one of the effects of the illness is diarrhea and possible transmission can be from inadequate cleaning of the aftermath.

wondering if flushable wipes were also in short supply?

I thought this virus caused respiratory issues, not stomach issues?

But I did buy a two-pack of flushable wipes yesterday (simply because I had opened the last pack we had) and there seemed to be a normal amount on the shelves.

I just thought people were stockpiling TP at first because they didn't want to run out if quarantined, and later because so many other people were stockpiling that they were afraid there would be a general shortage.

If I were going to freak out and buy stuff I would pick things more important than toilet paper. If we run out of toilet paper we own this cool thing called a "shower". Yall should check into it.

flu like symptoms - some people may have vomiting and diarrhea

Was at our Walmart around 1 today. Toilet paper row was low, but not empty. Shelves of bleach were empty except for about 8 -1/2 gallon bottles. Dishwashing detergent also looked like it was emptier than it normally is.There were exactly 6 gallons of distilled water left on the shelf , and their multi packs of water were in very limited supply. As I have plenty of hand sanitizer on hand, I didn't think to look and see if that was gone or not.

I swear it only seems to be people shopping at the club type stores, or maybe the people around me are just slackers because we went shopping last weekend and then again yesterday and the shelves all look normal--even for toilet paper. :-)

I noticed this too. Our local Costco is complete insanity and all the other smaller grocery stores are same as usual.

Paper goods are still in fine supply here, I think honestly it's because no one really has anywhere to keep extra!

What I don't understand is the people buying cases of bottled water? Is there some bogus claims going around that you can get sick from tap water?

People think the water treatment plants are going to shut down cause of the lack of staff to run them. I have heard some people say the water can get contaminated with the virus but I think they are being overly paranoid.

I went to my local Safeway (Kroger) today. The bottled water was well stocked as were cleaning disinfectant wipes/products. The toilet paper shelves were decimated, just 1 multipack left on one shelf. A store employee told me they are receiving 6 shipments per week of TP, water, & disinfectants. There is no hand sanitizer, period. Earlier this week the same store had plenty of TP and disinfectants, was low on bottled water and had zero hand sanitizer.

That is just fake news. People will believe anything now days. The plants are automated and don't need more than a couple of staff.

At Costco this morning, it was crazy!
They have a limit of 2 on water, paper towels, diapers, toilet paper, Clorox wipes, bleach, hand sanitizer and few other things I can't remember.
They were out of Clorox wipes, but there were people who had more than 2 Clorox wipe packages and they were taking them back.
If you were lucky enough to be there when they confiscated them, you could grab a pack.

Hubby went to Target today. We are down to 6 rolls in the house; he likes to wait until the last minute:sad2: He said all they had was the really cheap stuff, so that was a no go. Luckily for me, I could use the cheap stuff if I had to. I use hypo-allergenic baby wipes for the serious business, due to my bottom being very sensitive to the chemicals in toilet paper:confused3 Oh the joys of being fair skinned and allergic to everything in the world.

I wonder when people will start resorting to stealing toilet paper from work and restaurant, movie theater, retail business bathrooms.

I admit I did some panic buying today
4 bottles of wine
2 bottles of vodka
a couple sampler bottles too
If I'm stuck in the house for 2 weeks with dh we are both going to need it

Don't forget the mixers. Also, Tito's vodka is not a substitute for hand sanitizer. Use the really cheap vodka for that:rotfl2:

Baby wipes can work, but you shouldn't flush them.

A tornado or flood or earthquake or something can take out facilities while you're quarantined. And then you're going to need some water. And it is getting into flood and tornado season.

I live in Central Texas, which rarely, if ever, sees effects of hurricanes. However, whenever a big hurricane hits Houston, people here start freaking out and hoarding. One time, we needed cat litter, and they were completely out. Why the heck were people hoarding cat litter :confused3 Are there that many cats in this area? They were hoarding bread and milk too. My favorite were the people with 6-10 gallons of milk. What were they going to do with that if the electricity went out, which would be the most likely result from high winds?
