Pandemic?

My DH just got home from work. He stopped by the store bought a can of lysol (I already had a few) a bottle of purell and 2 6 packs of beer... he said he wanted to make sure he got the important stuff :rotfl2:

Your DH is on the right path...but only two six packs??:teeth:

There ya go! Let's lighten this thing up..:thumbsup2 :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I'm just soooo glad I quit working at our local health department. Can you imagine how many phone calls they are getting. My thoughts are with them too as their jobs just went into "High Stress" level...

I work for an insurance company and I expected to come in to increased calls on "is tamiflu covered under my plan?" I did not receive one single call all day today, which means people already know it is covered or not..or people aren't too worried about it yet.

I think that one of the problems is that we just don't KNOW.

A school in a close by town (Richardson) confirmed that they have a definite case of swine flu and the school was closed. Schools don't normally close due to flu so why the reaction? I would have to assume that it's due to a lack of knowledge about this thing.

Anyway, I won't panic either (at least not yet!) I think that fear of the unknown leads to a lot of this though.
Now I'm reading that it could be three cases at that school.

That's it, I'll see that beer and raise you a bottle of Canadian Club and another of rum. :thumbsup2

I won't call you! I know it isn't covered under our insurance. I feel your stress too...especially when you get the customer who is angry with YOU for not covering the med. Of course you probably get that everyday. I appreciate you!!

Is it time to send DH back out for "supplies" (aka booze)??

I don't drink, but if he could swing by and drop off 137 cans of Folgers Coffee, 563 cans of evaporated milk, and a quarter of a ton of sugar, I'd be forever in his debt..

Thanks! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I didn't say - or even imply - that it would die out soon.. I simply stated that there are only 40 confirmed cases in the entire country at the moment.. That will likely rise - (especially with so many kids having spent spring break in Mexico) - but surely you aren't saying it's time to "panic" - are you? How many people in the U.S. have died from this so far? Was WHO lying when they said the cases were "mild"?

I'm fully aware of what caused Reye's Syndrome in the 70's - and prior to the medical community making the connection between the aspirin and viral illnesses - it "was" considered an "outbreak" - and parents were reacting pretty much like they are right now.. Going into "panic mode".. I'm very, very familiar with it as there were quite a few children in my DD's school who died from it - and others who ended up with brain damage or other life-long health problems..

I guess I have to come right out and ask.. As the wife of an ID doctor, are you encouraging panic? If you are, I would be very surprised - because that isn't even a step that the WHO or CDC have taken..:confused3

Again - the "perspective" at this point is 40 confirmed cases in the entire country - period.. As I stated previously, that will likely change - on that we can agree - but let's not encourage people to panic until there's something concrete to panic about..

I have read every post on this thread, and I have not once felt that Dawn has been warranting or causing a panic...not in the least, I feel she has given us clear information and encouraged us to take this seriously, but not to freak out. I've gotten better info from her and others on this thread than anything on the news.

Maybe I missed something...I had to have to warrant this kind of post...

Thanks. Luckily most calls are nice people :) We do get the occasional upset folks but I just stay nice and pleasant and try to make them happy..sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Customer service is not for everyone but I love it.

I honestly don't know if it is covered or not. It could be covered by one employer group but not by another so if the calls come it will have to be looked up for each one. I have no idea if we have standard guidelines for it or not...or if there are even standards in place in case of pandemic warnings. I am surprised we haven't had some kind of e-mail on this already. We are very pro-active for impending hurricanes/flood warnings but not this?

I trying not to freak out here. But just in case I decide to freak out, where can someone get one of those masks? Like the blue ones that tie around your neck and head?

Tamiflu is crazy expensive under my insurance plan. DS#2 got flu type A earlier this year (the sickest he's ever been, no we don't get flu shots but are reevaluating that decision for next year), and Tamiflu was almost $100. Our doctor suggested we all get on Tamiflu, in case we all got it our symptoms would be less, but we just couldn't fork over the $400 at the time and rolled the dice that the rest of the family wouldn't get it. Plus after doing some research I read Type A this year really didn't respond well to Tamiflu.

We were lucky, and no one else got it from DS#2. But with this strand that no one knows anything about, there's no doubt I'd get it for the whole family.

ETA: If someone else in the family did come down w/the flu from DS we would have gotten Tamiflu for them. But our neighbors (who DS got it from) got it for one family member, thought it didn't help much so when their children got the same flu....they toughed it out w/o the Tamiflu.

But now that I think of it, I wonder if the same thing would be prescribed. If someone in the family gets this new flu, is it suggested the whole family be on Tamiflu also?
