This Mile
This mile is for the boy who bullied me in high school, then many years later, comes around to ask me if Im hiring. Like a rough stretch of road, he is in the rear view mirror of my mind and no longer of consequence. The next mile is for the teacher who said I was the least likely to find success in my life, because I was shy and introverted. Funny Ive never seen anything she has ever created or news of her changing the world with her wisdom. Now her memory is a mile behind and receding fast.
A mile for the United States Military that allowed me to grow and learn that living with honor and integrity is the path to earning the respect of others. More importantly, it is the path to self respect as well. The next mile is for discovering I can make changes. Another mile to remember that changes need to start with me. I will walk faster and stronger this mile for those that believe in me and encourage me. They are the ones that keep me moving forward. A hill now to celebrate how far Ive come, and the issues Ive resolved along the way.
Miles for cleansing, miles for remembering, miles for celebration, all are good for the soul. Its easier to go the distance when you give each of the miles meaning. When you are symbolically finding closure for a bad memory, motion is healing. We cannot change the past, but we can face it with acceptance for what it is, behind us. Miles to honor those we cherish are the ones that matter now. We cannot predict the future, but we can boldly meet what awaits us.
We can spend our days walking through the past, reliving the same memories. Like a car spinning its wheels, we can just go through the motions and not really get anywhere, then wonder why our lives went by so fast. I choose to follow my own road, excited where it will take me and what awaits me there. Life is a long journey, and a journey is best when you are moving forward. Each step will take us further from conflicts of the past and closer to where we wish to be.
Training our bodies will make us healthy and strong. The peace we find out there on the road will help to smooth the rough issues we face. Make the last mile of each workout strong, let it be your commitment to continue a life in forward motion.
