Travel Tips

I know that a lot of you that travel probably already do this but for those new to traveling to races and traveling in general, here are some tips.

I buy two of everything I use, toothbrush and paste, deodorant, electric razor....you get the idea. I put together a kit with all the stuff in it and then when it comes time to travel then all I have to do is throw that kit in the suitcase and not worry about that kind of stuff. The other day I lost my comb so I just borrowed the comb from my travel kit till I had a chance to get to the store and replace it. It helps when you unexpectedly run out of something to. But the main thing is that is one less thing to think about when I travel.

Another thing I do is buy vacation clothes off season and put them away already washed and pressed or folded in a suitcase ready for a trip, I have one suitcase for each season, already pretty much packed. DisneyWorld in January has been a challenge the last few years since it's fluctuated between 21 and 85 degrees.

I keep a gym bag packed with race stuff and exercise stuff in general I use it pretty much everyday and keep it packed with a couple of sets of shorts tech shirts and socks. I also keep it stocked with safety pins, bodyglide and extra shoe laces.

So when I'm ready to take off for a weekend race I just need to throw the shaving kit in the pretty much already packed suitcase, grab the gym bag and I'm ready to go.

Thanks for reading and please share your own tips for making travel packing and preperation less of a headache.

Sage advice. I once had a job where I was on call and had a set of crash bags made up. One for the summer, a second for the fall and spring and a third for the winter. It was a life saver to be able to grab a couple bags and run out the door when needed.

From that I learned that it is easier now to have a underbed bad dedicated to winter running gear. In there I have my throw down flannels, gloves, liners, head gear and tights. I also have a small box in my running dresser that has all my race gear. From number belts, to fanny packs, pins, lube and a few other things that I am spacing out about.

Now anyone who knows me knows that I really do not pack until the night before a big trip. Though the week prior I will go through my gear boxes to assure that I have everything. Then the night prior I am usually packed in an hour. (But then I travel 30-50% of the time so I rarely pack very early)

You two are very organized! I keep a list. A very long list, that still keeps growing. It contains everything I need to take or think I may want to take. Many things on the list I've picked up here on the boards, from safety pins to garbage bags to duct tape. Then closer to the trip, I start my "staging" area. I only actually pack things in the suitcase a night or two before I leave.

I also like to make a list of what I am planning in bringing. I usually make the list 2-3 weeks before I travel so that I can check to make sure I have everything or need to restock. I then typically pack in stages for 2-3 days prior to departure with last minute items tossed in as I head out the door.
That being said- I rarely pack for just myself;) and I only get to do 1 or 2 destination races a year so they are special.
