As my fellow Navy sailors (past and present) will attest to, there is a company called Tiffany Publishing that sells these wonderful certificates for Naval adventures, such as going throught he Panama Canal. Traditionally, the ship pays for such items from its Moral, Welfare and Recreational fund, btu the public can buy them as well.

The link for the Order of the Ditch is:

This might be a fun thing for your kids, especially the older crowd (11 and up). I figure Teens might get a kick out of it, since we adults do as well!

Just a thought. Have fun on the cruises!!

I think the certificates are a great idear but the ones from Tiffany publishing is for the Navy. If you look at the certificates, they have Navy ships on them and Navy seals. These certificates are earned for service. Lets not degrade these certificates for our fun. I would love Disney to make one with a cruise ship but I wouldn't take away from the Navy. Yes I know what they are because my Son Earned 3 of them. He has them on his living room wall.

Well we have Email to them to see if What u Say is true or
if they are just a large customer of the Co.. Im sure that if they supply them to Others.. they will let us Know and we will come up with something Else Also IM 100% positive that each Passenger ON THE 14 day Florida to Cal. will recieve one From Disney As we did on the Inaugural Western route.. had our name on it and we Each recieved one.. signed by the Captain.
very nice suitable for framing....

Do not want to Degrade Anything.....

I'd love to have one of these certificates. They look so cool. Please post any responses to your emails to them.

thanks,

Reneé

The company website says "proudly serving the US Navy worldside since 1953." If they don't cater to non-Navy vessels, then we can do something different. For the 8 kids in our group I was going to have my husband design a certificate for them. We can expand that to more folks in our group....

To anyone that is interested:

I heard back from the company and was very pleased with the quick friendly response. In a nutshell, and not to degrade anything, the told me that they do certificates for "all sorts" of ships. They went on to give me the instructions for ordering.

Peter and Renee, since you asked and were interested, I have sent you both a pm.

Hi moocow35,
Please send me all the info, because I would like one but
don't know how to P.M. Thanks.
Pam

Hi Pam,

I did not post my response back here because of your original response. It would appear the company does do these for personal use. I have copied and pasted their email, since you do not know how to pm, how could you read mine? LOL I do plan to order for each person in my party. Not to degrade the Navy, I just think they are a really cool, and suitable for framing.

Now we just have to find out who the Captain will be??????

With respect,
Robin

We do Order of the Ditch (Panama Canal transit) for all sorts of ships. To answer your questions:

Name of ship – Yes, it would be Disney Magic
Date of crossing – this would be the date that you actually transit the canal.
Point of crossing – does not apply to this certificate.
Names – would be the names whomever you wanted to buy a certificate for.
Captain’s name – again, yes this would be the name of the Captain of the ship.

If you are planning on ordering more that one certificate – say 4-5 for family members, your cost would be $5.50 per certificate, a ONE time set up fee of $10.00 – plus postage which would be about $8.00.

The best thing for you to do if you want to order, would be to wait until your cruise is completed. This way you will have the date, Captain’s name, etc.

The certificates will be cheaper when ordered in bulk. I would suggest everyon eon the Repo cruise meet forum decide if they want one (or more), and have someone in the group collect the names and such. If you can get the Captain's signature, they will also be able to put it on the certificate (I think). Maybe they can even change out one of the ship pictures and add the Magic!

Good luck with this!

Oh, I wanted to address the concerns regarding the Navy. They are quite valid, and I wanted to add some information that may make it easier to accept getting them for the Repo cruise.

The certificates put out by Tiffany Publishing are not awards or recognition officially used by the Navy. They are primarily momentos of certain events that may be important for a sailor, and are used by a ship's Captain to maintain positive morale. They are not required, however.

For instance, there are several certificates on their website that I should have received, but the ship decided not to participate. The Suez Canal transit and crossing the international date line (the order of the dragon, I think) are two off the top of my head that I never got and do not have in my service record. There is no certificate for my first shellback award, but it is logged in an obscure place, so I didn't have to get hammered the second time around. I did get the certificate for the second event, though.

The funds for the certificates are not provided by the Navy, but the ship's own Morale, Welfare, and Rec fund (money collected from the sailors onboard via soda and store profits as well as other events). Thus, the Navy does nto have any concerns with the certificates, and promote their use, but do not officially buy them.

The main reason the versions shown have Navy ships and seals on them is simply because the Navy is the largest customer for Tiffany. As was mentioned, they are happy to do special orders, especially if it is int he hundreds (like the numbers on the repo cruise for the DISer meet). The shellback ceremony dates way back before the inception of our navy and was a ceremony for mechant sailors to provide entertainment and as a right of passage for newbies.

All in all, I do not see it as direspectful for civilians to get the certificates for trnasiting the canal. They can be altered for you, if that makes you more comfortable. I am wary, however, to suggest getting the shellback certificate, since that does have significant and personal meaning to not only the Navy, but every true sailor. There is an actual ceremony attached to this recognition, that by tradition must be adhered to. A good description can be found at: http://www.members.global2000.net/~macminn/Shellback/Shellback.html

Transiting the canal, however, was just another day on the vessel, and thus the certificate indicates an event (liek the Repo cruise) more than a guarded tradition.

I'm definitely going to need one of these certificates for my Husband who is nearing the end of his career in the navy - and has the shellback, dragon, etc.......However - He hasn't done the canal - and in fact - that's how I talked him into going on this cruise!

About those Shellback certificates and ceremonies --- there is ALOT more to that story than just "crossing the line" etc...... Get a sailor to tell you sometime ;)
