Panama 08/17 With Andrew Derek

Sorry about the High Tea. We really enjoyed ours, though I imagine because it was our first experience we have nothing to compare it with.

The scones were to die for!!! In fact the whole expoerience was quite a highlight of the cruise.

After a great evening meal last night ‘Masterchef’ which for a while was suspended, -we went to the show it was described as Darren Romeo the voice of Magic, the start was delayed a bit, not sure what happened but Christian came up on stage without the usual music introduction then there was another gap And we started about 8.40pm.

I really enjoyed this show, it was a mixture of Magic and also he sang a number of songs, whilst doing trick or without tricks and impressions of various famous singers like Prince James Brown and even Celine Dion.

He choose people at random through the audience, one trick levitating a table was right in front of me a lady was chosen from behind, another trick a lady had to choose a Record cover to match his prediction again she was form just behind us.

A young boy was chosen to go on stage, and did a pick a card trick, it came out of the magicians mouth in the end, and he did the usual, disappearing lady trick and being put in a bag in a locked box and swapping with his assistant, And to the music of Phantom of the opera, his lady assistant was on a lounge chair, under a sheet, and then levitated in the area for some time, then disappeared.

He had a light bulb that he kept alight without a cable, and through it into the audience and it levitated in front of us.

I think some people were disappointed we herd people say, less music more magic required but even though some people left the WDT was full and people filling in all seats as they left after standing at the back or down the sides, Tonight’s concert by Ally and AJ will also be very popular. They got on this morning and will get off again before we leave at 11.30pm.
Today we pulled into the port of Aruba early and it was hot already but a rain storm came in for a brief while dropping a little rain, the seas had been very Calm overnight usual I am told for this season. Topsiders at 7am was very busy indeed, in fact has been busy most days bar early morning after a deck party or change in the clocks.

We got off at 7.45am to meet our private driver and guide for our tour of Aruba this morning, this was planned for 4 hours, but we went over that starting at 7.50am and we didn’t finish until 12.40pm. We started out West along the beaches including Palm Beach, a drive along Arashi, Palm, Eagle, and Manchebo beaches with a stop to see the famous divi divi tree, it faces south, they say to the main town.
through low rise hotels then the new all inclusive high rise hotels with casinos in them, up to the California Lighthouse, then some views from high spots over Aruba, including surprise a Water tower where buses cannot go but gave excellent views, and also he showed us the local wildlife not just iguanas but birds, wild goats, snakes etc. We went on to Alto Vista Chapel, anther Hill view of Aruba,
The Oldest Cactus in Aruba, in someone’s front garden, Casibari rock formations, where we were lucky as three DCL buses were just leaving and when we finished three more came in and we also saw ATV drivers come in. These are strange large boulders of granite and other hard stone and very tall,
We went to Bushiribana gold mine, walking around this and saw DCL horseback riding on the beach and then former Natural Bridge, the main part now fallen in but there is still a smaller coral formation baby bridge that is still there. Then north to the Ayo rock formation and Indian drawings
On to Jamanota (highest point), Baby beach,
Parke Arikok (National park) A walk into the Caves, where he talked to a park ranger to take us in by ourselves and we had a private tour underground with all of the rock formations with bats and snakes in captivity. This was great.
We then went back to the Hotel and Beach area and Downtown shopping area, via the Airport,
Water plant, He showed us the best places TO SHOP OUTSIDE THE Cruise ship ones and then took us back, he looked after us will with drinks, local bear, and wet cool towels to keep us cool.

We went to lunch at Lumieres it was nearly empty, although the Magician from last night was eating in there with us, took some shots of the empty Lumieres. Then we went back out for a shop. Lots of tourist and jewellery shops around and beautiful views and the shop keepers do not hard sell like Acapulco or other Caribbean towns. Very nice.

The ship is still in dock as I type this, we have a great view of downtown, basically one road back, and is funny as you walk along it you can look back at the ship towering above the shops about 5>6 levels above street level.

Of all of the ports of call and shore trips I place Aruba port and shore trip the highest, Cabo second highest with a great DCL signature tour there, Cartagena next a great port of call, so good for DCL to call there, loads of cruisers are telling DCL to come again to that port, the DCL tour there was good. Then PV, again a DCL signature private tour and Acapulco last where I didn’t enjoy the hard sell shops and the tourist traps we were forced go to. Only Castaway cay left to go now after two sea days.

Whist this is a great cruise I see lots of people ‘hitting the wall’ there are kids asleep in the evening meal, or the shows of all ages, there is so much to do, and you just cannot do it all the entertainment has been so varied you do not wish to miss anything, we have seen long lines for Don Ducky Williams to sign his lithographs. My kids won’t go to bed until late each evening, watching the movies on stateroom TV, or on goofy pool, or in the BVT, and I think they are high on sugar, soda, fun, and for me add Coffee to that as well.

All in all lots of people are finding out this marathon cruise needs to be paced and we have Captains Gala night coming up, princess at sea afternoon tea, (Some have had this already) a character breakfast, Palo dinner for us, Pirates night tomorrow, the Spa for my DW, and more shows coming up, and special food for us in the dinner rooms a Curry and Sheppard’s pie tonight for an example as extras for the English.

Highpoints so fat have been the ports of call bar Acapulco, -Cartagena and Aruba highlights for me, The Dissers, the weather most of the time, bar at the end of Panama and Acapulco. A lot of the meals have been excellent, the extra touches like Don Ducky lithograph gifts, Panama information the Entertainment. The Characters, the live bands, the deck parties and those deck buffets. Our Room service has been great and the CM’s always smile at you and greet you wherever you are on the ship.

Lowpoints the occasional ‘cool’ meal in dinner or topsiders, Palo Afternoon tea, (please change it back) the rudeness of some teenage kids loitering around the stairs and corridors and playing with the lifts, again as you get in all decks pressed alight and a kid or two in there. Found the booze pushing a lot more than before, I didn’t post this before but I was approached 26 times on embarkation back between getting onboard at 12 and the safety drill at 3.30pm for a drink sale, wither Cocktail, water package or Wine package. Its far more noticeable than previous cruises, my Dinner Assist server is less pushy so I purchase Smoothies cocktails and wine form him most nights but not on deck.

Tonight’s food is ‘Around the world’ and is tropical or casual attire, pirate tomorrow, and Formal on Saturday.

:thumbsup2 Makes very, very interesting reading, sure beats hello andrew!thanks, hope you cont to enjoy, my hubby caught me reading last page this afternoon and ended up going right back to the start!

Tonight’s dinner was very good the around the world dinner, and we asked it to be served quickly so we could get to the show. They kept repeating instructions to avoid queues in the WDT, first show audience will have hand stamped so they could not attend the second show as well, No seat reservation policy enforced, people allowed in on one queue at a time, not the double doors and no running at all or they throw you out!

Whilst I said dinner ‘fast please’ it went very fast we had everything by 7.05pm, I didn’t think there would be queue for Ally and AJ until 7.30pm when the first show was due to end but wrong there was already a queue and getting longer by the minute.

After they let out the 6.30 show people we were moved to another queue position and again CM’s and Christian repeated the rules to the queue again and again, we went in single file with hands checked for stamps at 8pm.

Every young child went to the front as the first show told them they would be allowed to stand, and sure enough when the concert performance started a lot ran to the front and stood through the performance and, Ally and AJ came around regularly to touch hands etc.

However the WDT, was not full, on the second half of the theatre most seats were unoccupied, and I think most adults gave it a miss. Remember we are still in port until 11.30pm, I am still overlooking the city, all lit up from my verandah, and a lot of adults have taken the opportunity to visit the local casinos.

My DW thought it would be a good time to do the laundry but she was pleased our dinner was fast, as soon after she arrived many other adults had had the same idea. It was very busy.

The concert was very good everyone enjoyed it that was there, and there was a lot of energy from the two sisters, and it was rather strange to see the WDT, as a band concert venue. They performed their hits for over an hour and the interesting facts are they are staying on the ship now till Florida and will sign autographs over the next few days, bet the lines will be full for that, maybe clash with Don Ducky’s lines.

Whilst we are at sea tomorrow we have a very busy day, a Character breakfast at 8.30am Princess at sea 3pm, Palo 6pm, for example.

We still have about another hour in port to go, before we leave and it’s about a thousand miles to Castaway Cay. I remember from 2005, the second day going up the Bahamas was going through one of the most beautiful parts of the sea I have seen.

I understand the weather here is unusually calm, no wind and no waves on the sea, we are told this is due to the Hurricane in the middle of the Caribbean pulling all other systems into it.

Hope we avoid that.

Sounds like a great trip, although I can't believe it's almost over, have a nice day tomorrow!!!:dance3:

sounds like another great day on a great trip, jealous of you for being on a ship, but not really jealous anymore. I got to meet some of my favorite basketball players in NYC(and got free tickets to a basketball game for 5 roows away from the court) so that made me so much happier I didn't go on the trip. But love reading about your trip sounds great :goodvibes

Keep it up as I am away to north at Aberdeen for weekend for ballroom dinner and dance.

I look forward to read when I come back :thumbsup2

Hope Castaway weather will be beautiful for you:thumbsup2

Andrew, it sounds like you are having a fabulous time.:)

Time for some detective work!;) What have you heard onboard about the Alaska rumors. In case you haven't heard it has been confirmed by the National Park service(NPS website) and DCL (reported on Cruise Critic)that they requested permits for Glacier Bay access for a 10 yr period - 2010-2019.

Are your sources still saying Northern Europe for 2010 or is Alaska a possibility?

Enjoy the rest of your trip!:)

Andrew it sounds like you are appreciating every aspect of your cruise.

Thanks so much for taking the time to share it with us.

Regards,

Ursula

We are going to C Cay!

Friday only two more days to go, today was a busy day, we started with a Character breakfast, back to the old type ones where all of the characters come around to your table, no song our dance in the middle just pictures time and autographs. Very good.

We had time on deck, a beautiful day with sunshine the odd cloud in the sky, and very glassy seas, we are currently coming up to the Dominican Republic, and travelling at 22 knots. The Captain said they had made slight course corrections due to the end of Gusto, and another tropical storm that could develop, but they feel we shouldn’t have any problems and we should be at Castaway Cay by 7.30am on Sunday.

The seas as said are so glassy, deep blue true Caribbean seas, not the darker colour of the Pacific Ocean. There are no waves at all just the wake of the ship.

We have sailed 4030 miles since LA and have 750 miles to go to Castaway.

Lunch was steakhouse in Topsiders and Parrot cay and a good selection, and after a slow start the ships pools were full at midday, Kevin Robinson winner of 7 x games gave a presentation on being a BMX athlete, at the goofy pool, followed by Mouse2o.

Now Ally and AJ had a scheduled autograph session from 2pm to 3pm at preludes, at 12.10 the line was past the shops and then by 1pm, around the lifts starboard side, past studio sea, and down the deck 4 corridor towards shutters.

It was getting a little out of hand so Christian organised a number of things, firstly a photo one per person was given to those in the queue, if you didn’t have one you would get to sign, i.e. no cut ins at all, then even that wouldn’t work so they gave out numbers we were about 80, in the queue.

The line started moving at 1.30pm, they called the girls down from their rest, the ship had to try to find more CD’s for them as people wanted these to be signed, and they ran out just past us at one per person. We know the room they have, but I am not going to give more detail.

We had our picture taken. Later at 3pm we had the Princess at sea afternoon tea, now when we returned to Lumieres, the queue for Ally and AJ was still around past Studio Sea, and down the deck 4 corridor but we were told it had been ‘cut’.

The Princess at sea is a lovely afternoon tea, and the food is more like the great afternoon teas we used to get in Palo. Small cakes cut sandwiches, tea and coffee.

All the Princesses came to the restaurant and the same as 2005 we were introduced to various princess things like a royal wave etc.

We were in the middle row of tables so had an unrivalled view of all of the princesses coming in and out.

Tonight is Palo first then pirates night deck party with the crew talent show in-between. Normal restaurants are of course on a pirates menu.

Pirates deck party is 9.45pm with the deck buffet at 10.30pm, fireworks between 10.30 and 10.45pm then POC Dead men’s chest on Goofy Ariel view, and POC Worlds end In BVT.

We know the end of the cruise is coming as tip envelopes have been given out and the charge to your stateroom sheets, I did mine quick to avoid queues later. Instructions on them say for the tips to be given out last night, quite clearly, we have always given ours at this time, but in the past a few people misunderstood when these should be handed over.

Basic tips for a family of four will start at $720 for 15 nights.

Rich Pupura is also o board giving a Cabaret tonight and I presume will join the till we meet again show on Sunday night. Saturday is formal, Captains Gala and Disney Dreams.

I didn't know AJ & Ally were that popular to cause such chaos.

BTW....the actors from Suite Life with Zack and Cody are currently onboard the Wonder promoting their new spin-off series.

Andrew - thanks so much for taking the time to post. Its interesting to hear you mention how some people are "hitting the wall" in terms of being onboard for so long and trying to do everything. How would you compare this Canal cruise to your Med cruise?
