Not to change this into a tipping thread, but now that I have been on Virgin Voyages twice, I think that I am a convert over to the "British" system. Yes, you pay a bit more upfront for your cruise, but all, and I mean all, of your tips are included. There is no "specialty" dining because it is all "Specialty" dining. There is no MDR. And, all gratuities are included. No 18% line on the price of your drink. It's already included in the price. Same for their "Rockstar" agents (think Concierge - that said, I have never sailed Concierge or Rockstar and probably never will - I'd rather do 2 cruises - but, I did talk to many people). While people did leave them some extra, it was expressly stated that their gratuities were also included in the fare for those stateroom categories.
It's a nice change from how out of control the tipping culture has gotten in the US. I mean, I went to a counter restaurant that I've been going to for years and now they have this new iPad payment thing where they turn it around and it suggests you leave a 20% tip. I've been going there for 20+ years, and they never expected a tip before, not sure what has changed. For the love, just charge $1 more per entree and pay your people!!! (OK, off of soapbox...)
Back to cruising, when I read that if you order the $5,000 drink in Hyperspace Lounge, it includes an 18% tip (yep, it's a $900 tip), it makes me think that this has gotten even crazier. On a lower level, it's kind of like the last time we went to Boma at AKL for dinner. That is a buffet. But since we had 6, it was an automatic 18% tip. The waiter literally brought us 1 round of soft drinks/tea and 1 round of refill. That was it. His tip ended up being over $100 for that.
Loved the "British" system. Just include it in the price and be done with it...
