My kids get cereal or a bagel almost every single morning before school (while I'm busy packing lunches - and the bagels are "real" bagels from a bagel store). I like the waffle/smoothie idea (my kids always beg me to get a waffle maker - hello, do you not realize you are eating cereal every day for a reason?!). I've found that most kids LOVE a nice fruit salad, and with a variety of fruit, everyone picks what they like. You could even make the salad the smoothie base.
