Painting house - which paint do you prefer?

I need to do a quick paint fix on the walls throughout the house before we place it on the market. Every room needs repainting, so we're just painting the entire house one neutral color. We've narrowed it down to two - Coral Cliche' (Glidden) and Arabian Sands (Behr). I prefer Behr paint - it's what I've always used. But since we're selling the house, I just want whatever is going to cover fastest and easiest. The majority of the walls that we are painting are white. One room is a bright yellow. One room is a bright blue. And the only other room that is not white is basically the exact same shade that we are going to use now.

The guy at Home Depot said he preferred Behr too, but Glidden would probably be a better choice since we're planning to sell the house. He didn't feel it held up as well but that it would probably cover better with just one coat. I realize we may need two coats on the two colored rooms (yellow and blue), but I'm hoping to get away with one coat everywhere else.

What's your opinion?

I have no opinion between the paints you've chosen, they are not the paints we use, but then again we are staying put for the time being. as for the darker color wall, I would say get a good tinted undercoat on for maximum coverage. The tint should be the color of the final color. For undercoat we usually use Zinseer (spell x ?) or Binz or Kilz, but I understand you can use your own paint tinted, just depends what blemishes you have to cover--

Best of luck on your move & home sale! :sunny:

I think I would look into the Kilz line. You can tint with the color you already have and idea of and hopefully you will only need 1 coat for all the rooms. One thing to keep in mind...whoever buys your house will probably paint over what you just painted so I would not spend alot on the paint itself.

I only ever use Porter Paints. I am not sure if it's a national line or local here in Tennessee. At any rate, it is more expensive but it usually only takes 1 or 2 coats. Behr is also a good line, from what I have heard. I would not go cheap with this...usually when you do you end up having to do more coats, which ends up costing you more money -- and time -- in the long run.

We used Behr on our whole house earlier this year. DH says it is the best for "normal" usage. They were doing a rebate thing not too long ago, if they still are, that would help defray the costs (it was like $5 for 5 gallon bucket). Good luck.

BTW - we chose all yellows/golds and light blue/aqua :thumbsup2

We always use American Tradition paint from Lowes. We used Behr in our last house and just did not like it. We feel that American Tradition went on better. And I also agree that you might have to use Kilz for your bright walls. Be be aware, Kilz stinks! Make sure you crack a window to vent the smell.

We only use benjamin moore...painting with Behr paints is like painting with water..took over 3 coats to cover the last time I tried it..and that was for blue going over plain white!! I can't imagine if you actually tried to cover some other color with that junk!! Its cheap but if you have to use three coats it defeats the purpose..use a good paint like benjamin moore and you can cover in one coat and the stuff astually sticks to the brush rather than running off like behr.

We use Benjamin Moore. The colors last and look great until you want to change again!

Benjamin Moore for me, too... You do get what you pay for.

This advice might be good for your next house. My DH uses Sherwin Williams Everclean. It's a bit thick to paint with, but it's very scrubbable, so for anyone with kids or pets, it really holds up! :sunny:

Sherwin Williams Cashmere!!! Good stuff, washable, no paint lines...I always feel like I am putting lotion on my walls!! :teeth:

We also use Benjamin Moore exclusively.

We also used Behr to paint all of the downstair areas. We went with melted butter (warm yellow) with cranberry accents. The paint was thick and we only needed 1 coat. We did use 6 gallons though...we did alot of painting!

I have been unhappy painting with Behr paints in the past. I have painter friends who agree. They do not go on well and it takes several coats to cover. I prefer Sherwin Williams for great coverage and it looks good and cleans well over time. I just bought a house and we painted exclusively with Sherwin Williams paints. My old house is still on the market and I may be painting my daughters room a neutral color (it is currently green and probably not that attractive to anyone except 12 yr old girls). With all that said, even though I love Sherwin Williams I will probably paint her current room with the cheapest paint I can find since I am selling. I agree that you get what you pay for when choosing paint.

We'll also be moving in our new house this Summer/Fall, so I'd love to hear more comments on paint recommendations! :teeth:

If you like Sherwin Williams paint, go to Wal-Mart and buy their off-brand. The guy who works there told me that it's Sherwin Williams paint. They don't have the huge paint chip selection that Sherwin Williams has, but they will color match one that you bring in. In our area, it's running a bit less than $11. per gallon. If you're selling, I'd go for a less expensive paint. Good luck!
