We live pretty much in the middle of nowhere. We happened to be near a Sherwin Williams paint store today and stopped in and found some paint colors we really like. The SW store is a bit far away, and frankly, their paint is pretty expensive, more than we'd like to spend (though the sales lady said there is a big sale coming up. We may need paint before then, though.). Any suggestions for a decent brand of paint we could find locally at a hardware store or even at Walmart? (Home Depot and Lowe's are also far away.) I'd like to match the SW colors, if I can.

Thanks!

Walmart can do a color match with the swatches you have from SW.

They have a "code" for a lot of their colors or if needed, they will do a "read" on the chip itself and match it that way.

I have had good luck with their ColorPlace brand paint. I've used it in several rooms in our house. Hired areas were painted with SW and I don't see a big difference. Just be sure to go with the satin finish to make wiping easier.

They also have other brands ... Dutch Boy I believe.

Thanks! I have used the Walmart paint in the past and while it wasn't awesome, it was good enough for our needs. Most of our house is painted in mistint paints from whatever store had a color that caught our eye on the $5 rack. ;) The only paint we bought on purpose was for our kitchen.

I was able to access the Jan. 2012 Consumer Reports through our state library databases. (can I just rave about how much I love libraries? Libraries are awesome.) I've had good luck following their recommendations in the past. Their recent tests have Sherwin Williams Duration (the most expensive SW paint at $50ish a gallon) at #18 of 19, followed by ColorPlace by Walmart ($14). Not what I expected to see at all with how many people I know who rave about Sherwin Williams. Many of the "Best Buys" and recommended paints I can't get without traveling an hour. I usually love living here, but I don't want to travel an hour for decent paint, especially with gas prices so high.

Hubby thinks we should just get the Walmart paint. I'm starting to agree with him. If it's only 1 step down from Sherwin Williams, how bad can it be? ;) I will probably scope out the local hardware store, too. :)

If I were in your shoes, I would probably go ahead and splurge on Sherwin Williams paint (not their very lowest tier, though) because you will need less coats to get the coverage you want.

If you don't want to do that, you can try one of the Walmart brands, just be aware that you may need to use twice as much paint to get full color depth, therefore it could very well be more expensive. Maybe you won't, but it's a possibility.

Do you have an Ace Hardware? I think some of them sell Benjamin Moore paint, which again, is more expensive, but good paint.

I still can't believe that SW's "Top tier" paint, Duration, came in so low on the Consumer Reports list for this year. That's crazy. The other tiers didn't even make the list!

We have an Aubuchon Hardware in town and a mom and pop hardware store with no chain affiliation. I'll check there as well as Walmart.

I just checked Consumer Reports online ratings and for Satin/Eggshell interior, Kilz Casual Colors (satin) and Ace Royal Interiors (satin) are pretty high up. Glidden Premium Satin is also very high but I can't remember if Walmart sells Glidden...I think they do, though.

We have used the Walmart paints (color place), Lowe's and Home Depot. While at the time, I loved the paints. Even though, they said 1 coat, it was 2.

Then I tried SW, OMG, there is no comparison. It was one coat, just one. They went one awesome. It was very pricey, but to us worth the money spent.

Our SW is about 35 minutes away so is Walmart and Lowes and HomeDepot are about 45 minutes away. So it is not like they are local either. SW had every color we purchased and for what rooms right in their computer system. Love that. I wanted to know what color my dad his kitchen in and they had that.

Good Luck!

If you have a Sears close, the paint sold there is Sherwin Williams paint, just under the Sears name.

Walmart sells Glidden. DH works for Glidden! :thumbsup2 Their paint is right on par with SW and is much better quality than Color Place & Sears.

Just realize, all paint bases are different. So you cannot match a color exactly. Close but not exact. Bases are tinted different via different companies so while the color formula can be scanned and matched the base one company uses is diffferent than the other. So FYI.

Well, we went to the local independent hardware store, which sells Dutch Boy, which we'd used in the past and were very happy with. It was a bit more expensive than the "best" paints Walmart sells, but the money stayed with a local business. They were able to match the SW color for baby's room, and had their own duplicate for the floor paint we needed. And my husband found a color he liked way better than the one he'd previously picked for his office. So as soon as our addition is done, we can paint! (I did get my ceiling paint at Walmart.)

I've used the the Kilz from Wally World and LOVED it! I bought the cheaper paint once for my office at work and we had to put like 3 or 4 coats on....it was a nightmare.

we always use Benjamin Moore paint and have been very happy with it. I think that regardless of what brand of paint you use, you have to use a tinted primer for deep colors (esp. reds!) and do adequate prep work to ensure good coverage.
