We lucked out last summer with a fence side table at Carnation during the afternoon parade. We had a pretty good view (although DS6 said the princesses did not wave at him)

With Paint the Night, followed immediately by the fireworks, any opinions on making reservations around 8:30 and try for an outside table to watch the parade?

There are now here near the same number of people standing on the sidewalk to watch the daytime parades as there are for the night time one at this point. It's way too soon to tell how popular it will be in 2 weeks, a month, in July, etc.

My guess is that PtN will remain popular throughout the summer, so you cannot expect to get a good view from Carnation's outside tables. I do think you can probably see the high parts of the floats (similar to how you can see the tops of the Soundsational parade), but you will miss the ground elements. You will certainly be able to hear the music and see the colors reflect off of things.

We had an 8:30 p.m. dinner reservation at Carnation Cafe this past weekend. The first PTN parade starts at 8:50 p.m. The hostess was very clear that they were seating on a first available table basis so our table could be inside or out. They weren't taking requests. I don't know if this policy was just for the kickoff weekend or will be in place going forward.

We ended up with an inside table that didn't have much of a view. We saw the tops of the floats and lots of changing color, and we could see some of the projections on the opposing building facades when Disneyland Forever started. Not great. Even if we were seated outside, I don't imagine we'd have that great a view. The curb was filled with standing crowds of about 4-6 people deep, and the rest of the sidewalk is used as a walkway during the show. People were walking very slowly either because of the crowds or to catch the show so they might as well have been spectators too.
