Paint color help-so sick of beige!!!

Two more questions. What kind of light does the room get? Morning? All day? Late afternoon?
What color is the floor/carpet?

Not a ton of light. We have two windows. Carpet is a berber type......actually now that I'm looking at it, the carpet does have some gray swirled in it. I could definitely live with a shade of light gray for the walls. But can I do gray walls in the den next to a beige hallway?

White Dove (Benjamin Moore) trim.

Walls:
Darker Beige: Latte (Sherwin Williams)
Lighter Beige: Macadamia (SW)
Gray: Coventry Gray (BM)
Blue: Nantucket Fog (BM)
Yellow: Lemon Sorbet (BM)

Take your pick.

Thank you! We are actually thinking about White Dove for the trim, as well as for our kitchen cabinets. Glad to see someone else recommend it! & we are planning to use Benjamin Moore. Our bathroom (down the hallway from the den) is very similar to that Lemon Sorbet color-we love it for our bathroom, but not quite sure its what I'm looking for in the den. I'm interested in gray, but unsure if I it will look ok if I have a gray den next to a beige hallway?

Yes, a gray can look fine with a beige adjoining room. I highly suggest white trim.

BM Gray Owl
BM Stonington Gray or Coventry Gray
BM Revere Pewter

SW Agreeable Gray

I love the color palette already suggested. Very bright and fun colors. If you went with that, I'd use the golden color on the far right for the walls.

But, my first suggestion was going to be a light grey. That would look great with your bolder couch color. And you could still add a few more pops of accent colors.

You could choose one wall as an accent wall for starters. Chose a color, paint the accent wall and live with it for a couple weeks. That way if you hate the color, you've only wasted time painting one wall. Or, you may find that the accent wall is just enough to jazz it up.

Be very careful when selecting a gray paint. It is as difficult to pick as beige. It had a lot of different undertones. One of the best tips I got for picking gray paint was to do it at home on your computer. Benjamin Moore (and other paint lines) have their paint palettes online. Pull up all the grays and you will clearly see which ones have pink undertones, blue undertones, neutral undertones, etc. Figure out which undertone you need and then jot down a few names. Then go to the store and start looking. Lots of people had made mistakes with gray due to this. Beige has the same problem. Undertone is hard to see in the store but will REALLY be noticeable in your home. My friend has a gray that looks normal in the middle of the day but it is a definite mauve as the sun sets. Really bizarre.

Thank you. We are planning to get some sample jars first. I should look for a gray with blue undertones to compliment the couch right?

I'm not a "yellow den person" either. Those are just the go-to colors I've settled on after a lot of trial and error - with lots of errors. ;) The vast majority of colors don't seem to look anything like you imagine they will once they are up on the wall. The only other go-to color I left off is Simply White which I always use for ceilings - and sometimes trim if I don't want it as "creamy" as White Dove.

If I can come up with a green I'm happy with, I'll have all the colors I'll probably ever need - and I can finally paint my bedroom.

Sort of. It's really, unfortunately, not that simple. For instance, there are somewhat warm blues and cool blues. When I look at the picture you posted, the picture in the background has some violet undertones that go well with it. It's going to be really hard to say.

To be honest, I am pretty sure that I would *not* go with a gray with that blue. I think there won't be enough "uplifting" mood in the room and that's a big deal for me. I'm one of those people that really only likes gray when it's added to really springy/lively colors.

White Dove is creamy? Oh......I thought it would be bright white. Trying to decide between White Dove or Simply White for our kitchen cabinets......

Can you tell we are embarking on a painting fest in the next few weeks??

Side by side you can really tell the difference. Simply White is the best "White", but the Dove White seems to go with many colors well as a trim color - particularly Coventry Gray. It's also a very popular color for cabinets.

I have an accent wall that is brick red with the rest of the walls a cream color. Blue furniture. Love the combination.

Pale yellow? Cream?

We are doing cream with white trim in the half bathroom and the entry way from the garage into the house. I figure that way I can change out accessories in the bathroom for pops of color easily.

Our living room end up cream too - I wanted pale yellow but my husband doesn't. There aren't too many colors I like to put in a 2 story living room.

We have white trim and a med/light neutral light taupe on the walls.
(not too 'warm' or yellow-orange, very clean look)
The paint on the walls is called White Pepper.
I think it is a Valspar color, but we went and had it mixed with Behr top of the line Marquee paint.
I think we went with the flat, as the next finish actually had a bit of sheen/shine to the finish.
Flat actually looks really great. NOT chalky. Perfect for most walls.

I have some matted framed photos from when my son was little... and I had different colors.
The largest matt is close to the color of the couch. (only maybe a slightly truer deep blue than your couch.. no green cast at all
The small interior matt is a nice red-purple-burgundy. (no orange, a nice clean neutral shade)
And the frame is dark brown wood with gold trim. (actually like semi shiny gold, not just a golden color)
When I held it up to the White Pepper Walls, I thought it all worked well.

If you are looking for a gray we just painted our living room BM Coventry Gray and we love it- it does have a blue undertone but it doesn't read blue. If you are looking for a gray with a beige/greige undertone you would love Revere Pewter- we have that color in the foyer and stairwells in our house. Really neutral- one of BM best selling colors for a reason- pretty much works in any room. I went through about 8-10 sample quarts before picking- we also liked the Stonington Gray and Gray Owl was also lovely (just a bit too light from what I was looking for).
Pinterest has a TON of paint ideas.

we got a GREIGE color from sherwin williams, its called pavillion beige, its kind of like a greyish beige. I love it with browns. Very warm color.

That is like the White Pepper that we liked from ValSpar, but had mixed with the better Behr paint.
It is supposed to be a 'gray'... But it def. has some light clean taupe to it.
It is a really great color for so many color palettes!

Be sure to paint the samples on at least two different walls. Look at them at different times of day and night with your lights on and off. Live with them on the walls for a couple of days. I picked out 5 sample colors that I loved for my great room. The sample that I liked the most was the one that looked just awful on my walls. I picked out a couple of sample colors for the trim and didn't go with either. I painted my ceilings the same color as my walls. Took some getting used to but now I love it because it makes it much cozier.

Thank you! I never knew that painting would turn into such an ordeal! The last time (& only time) we painted was when we were preparing my kids' rooms when I was pregnant & with both kids, we walked into the paint store, chose a color from the color cards, & painted & both rooms turned out great! Choosing a color for a "grown-up room" is much more stressful! :)
