Just came across this rumor.
What do you think about this? Would you like it?

Paid Fast Passes?

A couple of rumors have cropped up online that Disney is looking for a paid version of Fast Pass for 2009. No details are yet known, and I have heard nothing directly myself. But if this turns out to be true, I'll greet the news with happiness. Just how much happiness is a question of how the program is tweaked.

If they stop all free Fast Passes entirely and only allow FP for the guests staying at Disney hotels, that will certainly drive attendance at the hotels, but at the expense of annoying the locals pretty significantly, and 2009 does not look like a year when one wants to annoy the visitors who would otherwise come every week (when no one else does!)

At the other end of the spectrum is that they continue the FP program as it currently stands, but also sell a version of the Dream FastPass--one admission to each "big" ride per park, per day. Universal does it, and SeaWorld just started doing it too (for about $30/day). Yet I think that course of action would be missing a golden opportunity to reform the FP program from the ground up. You can't flood the system with thousands MORE front of the line tickets while leaving everything else the same--it would paralyze the standby lines like never before.

No, what I'd rather see is the installment of the paid FastPasses at the same time that you crimp the supply of free FastPasses, without cutting the supply off entirely. What if every ticket got a single free FastPass per day, and if you wanted more, you could buy the paid version? That would satisfy the locals, and likely placate the visitors who want to watch every nickel, while at the same time creating enough capacity for those with deeper pockets (or who feel more desperately that they must ride every last thing on this vacation).

You could even fold in the above scenario with a hotel benefit variation: stay at a Disney hotel and receive a Dream Fast Pass. Or, stay off property and just get one free FP per day. Or, as a third alternative, augment your single free FP with a paid version for the day. Even if all three of those existed at the same time, the numbers of folks moving through the "Return" lines would probably be about the same as we see now. Not a bad solution to the Fast Pass problems we've seen over the past years. I hope they do it!

I think it does make sense to have a Dream FastPass offering, for a fee, available perhaps only to Disney resort guests, or perhaps just Disney deluxe resort guests.

Even though it's a rumor, things like this just reinforce my decision not to purchase DVC.

I understand that Disney is a business, and they need to make business decisions that will lead to future growth and profitability, but this is nothing more than trying to dig deeper into our pockets with no real benefit to the consumer (something that was once included with the entrance price, but now you have to pay for it).

I know I'll be in the minority with my next comment, but here goes... This is very similar to the hard ticket events Disney now has. Paying extra for a "Party", when I've already paid entrance to the park for that day.

Like I said, Disney is a business. I guess we'll just have to accept it (if it does happen) and move on, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

Heck, I don't like paying the admission fee, or paying for meals, or paying for the flight to get down to Florida. Generally, paying is the part of things that consumers don't like.

I think fastpasses should remain free, but I can see them linking it to your hotel ressie. That would encourage more people to remain on site and wouldn't cost them anything to implement. As for locals, maybe they could give out so many with a seasonal pass or something. I don't like the idea of them charging for them outright or only allowing those in deluxe resorts have them. Most people cannot afford deluxe accomodations.

I agree.

I don't have a problem paying for something. However, I do not like it when the consumer is nickeled and dimed to death with no further value, and certainly not decreased value.

disney is already using similar system in disneyland paris.....

You can still grab regular fastpast during your visit, but they offer as well VIP fastpasses.
These fastpasses allow you to enter the attractions fast past lines all day long, as much as you want.

These fast passes are offered for the concierge disneyland hotel ( more than 700 USD/ a night for room , entry passes and breakfast) or to the concierge or for the suites.

It works really well.

I hope the same system will be set up in Florida!

I don't want to see a charge for Fastpass, though I wouldn't be surprised to see FP somehow linked to being a benefit to staying on-site someday.

However, consumer purchasing behaviors belie that. People complain about being "nickled and dimed" yet still choose the lower base price, with surcharges (nickels and dimes), over a higher base price.

I hate the paid system at Universal. I drive down from Gainesville, under 2 hours away, so of course I'm not going to be at a resort, so why punish people for living close to the parks, especially when we're the most frequent visitors.

I must confess that is these VIP fast passes are the only reason we stay on concierge level in Paris.

We love them and would gladly pay an extra fee them.

Maybe WDW could the same for the guests on concierge level.

Just wanted to point out, this rumor has been around for years, and nothing has happened. One if Disney's selling points for Fastpass is anyone can use it.

Resort guests may get some sort of special bonus at some point (Disney has various patents to that effect), but I doubt they'd pull FP from everyone.

Disney already had other methods of driving people to the resorts (free dining, bouncebacks, etc.)

I don't follow consumer purchasing behaviors, I'm a rebel.

To be honest I am kinda glazing a bit but...I think they should off some perk to all Disney resort guests when it comes to fast passes. It really sucks to stay at a value resort and then be told by Disney-"you didn't spend enough, so you don't count as much". I have no problem with the high cost resorts having better pools, and what ever else they get while at that resort- but a Disney guest should be a Disney guest -no matter how much they can afford to spend. Just like EMH -it should be implemented to include all.

As far as AP holders, I might be wrong on this but...if you are buying the AP and going every weekend, you a more than getting a deal. Plus you get room discounts and such. And now Disney has extended the resident perks to include other states. Also as AP holders don't you basically know when to avoid high attendance time at Disney? Ans because you have all year to ride those popular rides-whereas people on vacation only have that week or 10 days, I think that the pressure isn't "on" for you like poor old me in NY:sad2:

What I am really curious about is DVC owners and what perks they get. Does Disney take care of you guys the best??I think they should-but don't honestly know. We kinda looked into it but made a point of looking at the numbers way before we looked at all the perks and benefits so we wouldn't be lovestruck into making a financial decision while having dreams of being at Disney every year-lol.

I guess how you view the scene is from where you're standing right?

I'd be willing to pay a high price for special fastpasses... (& I'm not rich;) )

I think they should keep the free FP but also offer VIP ones, like at other theme parks.

There are two "major" perks that DVC gets in my opinion. However, the rule of thumb is not to purchase DVC with regards to perks because they can be here one day and gone the next.

1. $100 of AP and PAP. This is for immediate family members living in the same household.

2. 10% - 20% discount on various sit down restaurants at various times around WDW.

I don't know if they "treat us the best". I believe DVC actually has to negotiate the benefits just like anyone else with Disney proper. We do get a nice AP discount, and get some dining and shopping discounts, although better discounts in a lot of cases can be had with the AP.
