Pagers . . . do YOU wear one?

Sadly, I do.

I've had my "tumor" since residency days in 1985, although over the years, it has shrunk from the size of a small bread box to just a bit bigger than a matchbook these days.

The newest version is my Motorola alpha-numeric. It is a bit bulkier, but I do like the option of receiving text messages, instead of those incessant call-back numbers. My only complaint is that the green background makes the message hard to read sometimes.

When a cover other inpatients, I also wear a long distance pager.

Although they are a necessity, I do detest them sometimes. I feel like a dog on a leash . . .

So, how about you? Do you wear a pager? For work or personal reasons?

My husband had an extra one after one of his employees left, so I got that one. It's nice because I'm a substitute teacher and I never know where I'm going to be working. This way if the my kids school's need to contact me, they can through the pager. Typically I keep it in my purse on beep. I feel secure about my kids contacting me then. :)

My kid's father works way too far away for him to be a help in that kind of a situation.

I'm thinking about turning in my pager. I was on a project 7 years ago where the company needed to reach me 24/7. I actually liked the pager because, without it, I would not have been able to take a vacation. As it was, the company knew that they could get ahold of me if necessary, so they didn't put up a fuss when I left for WDW for 2 weeks.

Now my pager is hooked to my voicemail at work. Whenever anyone leaves me a messages, the pager vibrates and scares the you-know-what out of me. Everyone knows that my pager has gone off because I jump. Since I am at my desk most of the day, I think that the pager is just an unnecessary expense for the company and it has become more of a bother than an asset to me.

I don't have a pager. My son used to have one but now he just uses a cell phone.

I used to write software for the alarm monitoring industry (Brinks and other such firms), and had to take my turn once a month wearing a pager for tech support. During that week, I was available 24/7. I l;eft that jop to join my current company in 1992, but I still cringe evertime I hear a beeper go off.

I live with my cell phones, actually two, one for when home in Chicago, the other for when I travel. But I also still use my pager, one no longer made, a Motorola Gold Line Pen Pager, barely bigger than a pen, that a carry in my shirt pocket, with my pen. It is such a nice one, can't understand why they discontinued it, other than maybe the high price.

I use it, like TC above, only to be paged if someone calls my VM at my office. They call, leave a message, I get paged. I call, get the message, and am able to get back t my clients quickly, efficiently. Great for nights and weekends. My long time clients have come to expect promptly returned calls, regardless the day. Works well.

And both my cell phones and pager are always set to vibtrate only, I hate all the innane music played on phones today, loud and obtrusive.

I have a pager for work. I only get paged in emergencies and when someone leaves me a voicemail, which is very rare, since most people just call me at home (I WAH). I never wear my pager out. I wear my cell when I'm out & can't stand having both on my waistband.

My DH used to work for a computer help desk & was on call 24/7 one week a month. He still cringes when he hears a pager go off.

I'm required to carry a cell-phone. They used to give pagers but have switched to cell phones.

Nothing like being paged 2am, half asleep and trying to figure where the fly is, how fast you can kill it and fall back to sleep:eek:

DH wears one for the Fire Department 90% of the time. I do, however, insist that it be turned to vibrate during Church! :D

i have to wear one for when I am on call. I also hate that 2 am call of either "i am sick and need to go home, can you come in?" or i am working at 630 am and I am sick, can you come in? whenever that thing goes off i know. CAN I COME IN!!!!!

I can get pages, IM's, and e-mail through my cell phone, so I just have that.
