Packing questions

When do you start packing? Especially those of you going on a long trip? What are some of the must haves that you can't forget? For those who are going to be gone 2+ weeks what does your packing list look like?

We'll have 11 nights in Florida with laundry facilities, then another 4-6 nights on the road. Two kids (5, 8), one still in diapers.

This is the longest trip we've ever taken so I'm at a loss on what to pack, how many clothes, shoes etc... We have laundry facilities but on the flip side it's vacation, I don't want to be doing laundry every other day.

I've been thinking about what to pack for our upcoming July trip for awhile now. And I have been collecting things that I know I need. I just bought autograph books from Target (Dollar section right as you go in-they only had princess ones but who cares they were a dollar). We have a lot of stuff packed about a month in advanced. Not clothes but other essentials like sunscreen, bug spray, first aid items, autograph books, activities etc. I'm going to be starting our Disney tub pretty soon and have to get our packing list out. If you would like I can PM you the list.

I suggest that if you are planning a non-park relax at the pool day then do your laundry that day. When we used to stay 2 weeks we usually planned a pool day and did laundry then since the facilities are by the pool. Then headed to DTD or if we had APs to the EMH park, even explored some hotels or headed to the outlets to get some discounted Disney merchandise.

With 11 nights in Florida and another 4-6 nights on the road, I would pack enough for 6 to 7 days and do laundry twice. We've stayed in villas on our last two trips with a washer/dryer in the room and I loved packing light! For our 7 night trip, I brought enough for 4 days for each person and just threw the laundry in during one of our afternoon breaks.

I start packing at least three weeks before. Lol. I am a light packer, and whether I'm gone for a week or two weeks, it'll be the same amount of clothes. If I am gone longer, I do laundry. This year, my trip is 8 nights. My toiletries and products are always kept in a bag, ready to go, so that's not a problem. Everything I bring fits in one carry on and my personal item, which is a Jansen backpack. When I pack my clothes, it's a like a capsule wardrobe. Each piece basically goes with every other piece. Makes it easy peasy. This year, I'm sort of agonizing that I'm going in November. I'm nervous about the weather and the fact that it can swing from hot to freezing, it's easier when you know it's just going to be one way or another. I also do not have children, so that makes it way easier on me, too.

My biggest must haves are my chargers, iPhone and my liquid or chewable meds. I cannot swallow pills at all, because of radiation damage from cancer, so I sort of have to carry a bunch of just incase meds, because they're not easy to find in liquid or chewable form if I need them.

It's not finalized yet. I need to pare down the clothing, I think. Get rid of one Of the two pairs of pants and one skirt, and I am thinking I'm not going to end up needing a bathing suit.

I need to start thinking about packing. I always take to much stuff, but hope to try to cut down this time and only bring a few outfits and do laundry. Then again it is going to be in August so we may have to pack more then I want.

I like to smell clean at dinner.

That means two shirts/day. Two pairs of socks & underwear/day. Three pairs of shoes - you need one pair dry to not have 'issues' and a spare in case of rain.

We cheat - many DVC rooms have laundry inside. One load while we're in the shower is no problem.

Besides, my wife prefers traveling home with clean clothes (and I do the laundry). Love that woman.

That'd be great, thanks!

Well now I don't feel so crazy for thinking about my packing list 3 weeks out!

Wow..obviously not a planner. I Pack the day before. Bring too many clothes. Even with laundry I pack enough underwear for a week even if I'm going 10 days. Two pairs of shorts, workout clothes, two swimsuits, 5 or more tops, two pairs of pants, two pjs, three sandals, one pair of gym shoes. One really nice outfit. We rarely go to parks so we really don't need man clothes just Swim suits and shorts.

We don't like to cart too many suitcases, so we pack about 6 outfits for a week, do laundry twice and change for dinner as needed. Summer is brutal at wdw. We usually do an afternoon nap or pool break, and that is a good laundry time. Bring quarters, a pop-up mesh hamper, and your own detergent if you don't like the individual Tide powder boxes in vending machines. We have the kids help fold and put away the clothes, so it goes quickly.

We also pack color matched T shirts for Red Day or Yellow Day, etc so we can easily scan for the kids. Makes our photos come out nice, too.

Enjoy!! Packing is part of the anticipatory fun.

I would never be able to carry all those clothes. It would weigh more than I do. :rotfl:

Thanks for this post and making me look at my own list, because I just realized that my magic bands are nowhere on my list! :scared1:

LOL. Umm...... thanks. I just realized neither were mine!

I wonder, how much sunscreen will we need for 4 people, for 10 days. Will 1 bottle (Coppertone Baby spray) be enough?

I would bring at least 3 bottles of sunscreen. Sunscreen is a must in FL and if you go swimming you will put it on more then once in a couple of hrs.

I'm bringing lots. We are going in July and will have lots of summer left when we get back to use it up. Plus we use sunblock that won't be available in the gift shops or even Walgreens.

I would definitely bring more than one bottle. We use about a bottle for just two of us. I only use Neutrogena, because I've have broken out in hives head to toe in other sunscreens. I'm not some one who has a lot of allergies or anything either. Don't know what the deal is there.

May I ask what you use?

Badger sunblock, unscented. We also use kiss my face. I bought some blue lizard to test out this summer, but the first two work well for us. It's definitely a different feel than store sunblock, but has fewer chemicals as well. My son and I break out from store brand, banana boat, etc. Check out EWG sunscreen guide as a good reference as are reviews on Amazon.

I usually pull the suitcases out about 3 - 4 weeks before we leave and just leave them out in the guest room. Then I start to gather stuff, starting with the things I won't need at home before we go. Then about 2 weeks out I start pulling out the clothes I want to take as I do laundry so that at about 1 week out, I have everything laid out on the bed and ready to pack. We've now done Disney for the same length of time at the same time of year for 4 years now, so my packing list just carries over from 1 year to the next. I like do be completely done a couple of days before we go because the last thing I want to be doing the night before is panicking about forgetting something.

So we leave Wednesday and I came up with a list today and filled one of what's likey 4 suitcases for the 4 of us. I'll be the crazy person running to the 24 hour Walgreens ny my house for something I missed at 1 am before our 7 am flight!
