Has anyone ever tried rolling your clothes when packing? It is supposed to reduce wrinkles and take up less space? I've traveled several times with kids and have never done it but always been curious. I guess I'm "afraid" that my clothes will be a mess when I get to Disney. For anyone who has done this, how do your clothes come out? Does it really save space?

We do this with our clothes. I don't think it really saves that much space, but I am able to roll the kids shorts, shirt, socks, and underwear all together. It makes it easier for them to just pull out a roll and get dressed.

I do it for "big" clothes, like my jeans, shorts, polar vest,....
But I don't think it's useful for the undies, socks or t-shirt, because stacking those clothes allows to takes more.

When you roll, it take more space "in height" than "in lenght" (I don't think I'm clear, sorry ^^')

In short, I think it depend of your luggage (height, lenght, number of luggage) and the way you travel (car, plane,....).

You can try the "rolling" method before going, just to test it, then you'll be able to know what's the best for you and your family.

I always roll my clothing when packing. Personally, I feel it keeps my clothes less wrinkled and they take up less space.

We roll clothes (my husband and I) and find that it saves quite a bit of room. The clothes don't get wrinkled or messy at all. We use an XL LL Bean rolling duffel bag and it works great!

I don't roll because I usually pack about 30 mins before heading to the airport, but my sister rolls EVERYTHING and it's amazing how much she can fit in a suitcase. She moved her entire wardrobe (2 closets) to europe in just two standard sized suitcases and one fedex box. It does help with the wrinkle issue as long as you unpack as soon as you get there and not leave it rolled up all week.

I roll our clothes for every trip. It works great for us. I also put undies & socks in a gallon size ziploc bag and push out all the air, kind of like a "space bag", that works wonders in saving space. I make sure to bring a small spray bottle of wrinkle releaser too, which I got from the sample aisle at either Walmart or Target.

We rolled ours for our first trip, and it worked out fine. The only problem I had was my kids getting into the suitcases b/c we were split into two separate rooms . They mixed things up pretty badly. After leaving and starting to plan our next trip, I started hanging out on the Disboards. I learned about Ziploc bags. These, in my opinion, were way better than just rolling. I was able to put an outfit in each bag, roll it, zip it, and pack it. We took our 7 person family to WDW for 11 days with only carry-on suitcases this past May. Nothing was wrinkled, and each outfit stayed with its pieces in the bags. I will absolutely use them again. Some people use packing cubes and folders, but I couldn't justify the expense for my large family when I use coupons to get Ziplocs for free or cheap. We put socks inside shoes and ziplocs. It was a very organized trip. Good luck with whatever you decide!

I used to roll our clothes, then I rolled them into zip locks, then a few years ago a fellow DISer friend recommended packing folders and cubes (thanks JamStew). I met her down at WDW a couple of months later and we got to talking about how much she loved her packing folders and cubes and how she couldn't pack now without them. I came back and ordered a few from ebags and fell in love with them too. I then found some on sale at our local Samsonite outlet store, then later found some of the good Eagle Creek ones even cheaper at TJMaxx. Now I have them in all sizes and can't imagine packing without them.

When my daughters were younger I used the DIS tip to pack a complete outfit in a ziplock bag and squeeze all the air out of them. Then the girls could grab a bag and get dressed. Their clothes wrinkled some but out in the heat the wrinkles fell out quickly.

Last trip I picked up some small saver bags for DH and my clothes. They worked great and I couldn't believe how much fit in the luggage. There were some wrinkles but we didn't mind.

The above idea about a bottle of wrinkle release is great. I will have to pick one up for my upcoming trip.

As for rolling clothes, I have done it with our heavier clothes (jeans, sweatshirts) as they seem to take up less room that way.

Does that work on facial wrinkles too? :cool1:

They look like a good idea. Once I heard about them I looked into them, but with 7 people to pack for, it just didn't seem cost effective for our family. I'm glad they work out for you. It may be something I do eventually or slowly for our family. I lean more towards waiting until my hubby and I start taking trips for ourselves when the kids are older, but I might pick up pieces here and there. We'll see. For now I am happy with Ziplocs!

I roll most of my clothes when packing, and find they don't wrinkle. I think they also take up less space that way.

One year I did a "test pack" a couple of different ways: once with rolling my clothes, and once using "travel space bags" to see if the clothes took up less room using space bags. Well, I was very surprised at the results. I did the space bag test first, and found that my clothes were actually more wrinkled. Then I took the same clothes and rolled them tightly. I think the rolled clothes actually took up a little less space, and they didn't get wrinkled! I didn't like the space bags at all - with the "travel" ones you basically squeeze all of the air out. What a pain it ended up being! Maybe I was doing it wrong - but I found that unless the top of the bag was sealed completely, the air just leaked back out. And it was hard to get the ziploc-type seal to close completely. I finally gave up and went back to rolling, which worked great!!

See, I actually did the same thing, but had different results. I originally packed everything using just the roll method. I had my suitcases filled to the brim, and needed room for souvenirs, so I had to figure something out. We only use carry-ons, so it was tight no matter what. I went out and got a bunch of ziplocs, put each outfit in one, sealed them most of the way, smooshed the air out by rolling, sealed them the rest of the way, flattened them out and stacked them. I had so much extra room I couldn't believe it! I didn't do it for my own clothes b/c they were bigger and I would've had to by larger bags. For the kids it worked out fabulously!
