Packing list for race weekend

I take an ice bath as soon as I can after running. Then, I use the epsom salt later in the day. Usually before dinner time so that my legs don't ache as much when I go dancing. :lmao:
Yes, it means ANOTHER bath, but it does make a HUGE difference in how my legs feel. And it doesn't have to be 20 minutes. Even 10 minutes will make a difference. I have found that epsom salt seems to work better a few hours after running.

i have to give credit to Pat's hubby Jim because it was him that I saw post race with this and it stuck.

I was lucky enough to finish the 2008 DL Half with Pat's dh Jim. While in the DL Refreshment tent I was juggling my water, powerade and goodies and looked over at Jim and saw him pull out a goody bag and drop his food and what nots in. Smart man. Actually I thought BRILLIANT Man! :teacher:

I remembered this at the EE5K and was so thankful that I had a place to toss my waterbelt, my warm powerade and banana so I was free to pose for photos and not have to take a lot of time gathering things off the ground.

I have a few goody bags that remain in decent shape from Disney and other races so have one or two hanging around PLUS those new Disney collapsible totes that have the hooks on them would probably hang nicely off the water belts or a family member could hand it off as the racer passes thru Epcot to the finish. My running skirt has a pocket in the back that I won't access during the race but it will hold my phone, room key, money and a folded goody bag. Did this for EE5K. But if not wearing something with a pocket and have a family member stationed as you go thru Epcot towards the finish they can hand you the bag so you have it with you to toss in your bottle carrier, belt, camera, finishline banana, muffins and such and fresh bottle. The bag holds all the items while you smile for the camera, a quick reach for 1 item and you are on your way to get your checked bag.

In DL this year they had bagels that weren't wrapped and had I not had a bottle that was tapered at the top to hold the bagel it would have been on ground or being held in the photo. With a bag it would be kept as clean as can be without parking lot dust on it. :thumbsup2

Thanks Jim!!!! It was a great tip i picked up from you :thumbsup2 I am usually so focused on the race that I never thought about the post section. A while back Carrie and Cam and others had posted about checked bags and that was great too and something I now do. :)

Always learning. :goodvibes

Check bag:

I put crocs in tehre, as my feet have got to be out of my runnign shoes post race. DH keeps a spare shirt in there and that helps losts as we stay post-race to wait for others. I'm just too darn lazy to go change in a port-o-potty. Plus, I only enter those when necessary. A shirt change doesn't rank. ;)

ok - now that I've looked at the 15 day accuweather forecast - I think I need to pack more warm weather clothing!! Gloves, scarves, coat, pants... oh MY :scared1:

Do we really need to bring our proof of time? I sent mine in electronically months ago. So, was that bit of advice just for those who are changing their times?
you should only need proof of time if you want to change your corral. If you are good with your placemet, no need:).

Can you put the stick (or other sticklike device, like the Tiger Tail) in your carry on bag when flying or does TSA confiscate it because it could be a weapon?

I don't want to lose mine to TSA, but I'm also paranoid about bags not arriving!!

It should fly ok in a carry on. Historically it has been fine but you may get a barney fife TSA agent. With this year's added scrutiny you may have an agent consider it a sporting good capable of injuring; or a tool longer than 7"; or martial arts/self defense item like a Nunchakus or a baton.

Two options exist. One is to put it in your carry on and hope it passes. In the event it does not then check your carry on. Or second, place it in your checked bag. The chances of loosing a bag are slim if flying direct, a little larger if connecting. Since the stick is a race day non essential , the latter is probably the safest plan.

Note that while it is plastic, it will still show up as a funny item in the X-ray.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'm going to go the checked luggage route -- just to be on the safe side.

Perhaps I should just FedEx it there -- lol! Just kidding :)

This thread still has good information that has helped me craft my own list. Let the packing continue!

I flew with my Stick and my foam roller in my carryon three days before Christmas and didn't have a problem. For reference, I flew out of Newark Liberty International and their TSA are among the more strict that I've found.

Thanks TigerLilly! :thumbsup2

I go to JoAnn Fabrics, get the fleece from the remnant bin - cut it into a scarf, and it becomes a "throw-away" The start of the races will be in the 40's by the time you get your race on - you'll throw it away...

also, went to WalMart and found the cotton gloves - 4 or 5 for $4! Again, throw-aways

I have a sewing machine, and actually sewed a fleece hat (for charity, we live near Chicago our church has this set up) out of the remnant he can throwaway as well - if he wants it - He'll have his WISH hat to race in!

I'll have Bells (cow bell for cheering)
and sponges (I think at the end of the marathon, it will be humid!) to pass out to runners!

GO TEAM!

Last fall, I managed to fly with a frozen ice pack ( I was taking homemade cake to my 85 year old mother). However, it showed up on the screen at the security checkpoint so I explained what it was. The girl was really nice and allowed it,a but I was flying out of a tiny airport. (Wilmington, NC). I actually bought the ice pack at the dollar store so if it was confiscated, I did not care. Good luck!

A note about putting Epsom salt in a carry-on bag -

About a year ago, I wanted to take some with me on a trip. I had a large bag of it at home so I put some in a pint size baggie and put it in my carry-on. TSA was all over it. It had to go through a drug and other chemical screening. I think I'll put it in a checked bag this time. :rolleyes1 Maybe, if you buy a small factory-sealed package of it, you might be able to take it on the plane without any hassle.

As for other items to take on the trip - not sure if this has been mentioned - small roll of duct tape. You just never know when you might need it. It's come in handy on a few of my trips.

I have duct tape stashed everywhere! I wrap it around old Disneyworld room keys. A few inches of duct tape can save the day!

Wanted to add one more thing: Put your running shoes in your carryon! (if you don't just wear them on the plane) You could find suitable running clothes, etc, if your bag doesn't make it due to being misdirected (most bags usually catch up to you), but finding YOUR EXACT SHOE that has to carry you 26.2 miles might be a tougher task.

I will be checking a bag with most of my stuff, but will have one complete running outfit in my carryon, just in case.

As for the older question about carrying on "the Stick"...I don't know. But I use the TP massage rollers and the TSA always questions them. So I check them. Will put some epsom salts in my checked bag as well. Most of my gels in checked bag, but one or two in my 3-1-1 bag.

OK...that was more than one thing. lol
