If I pack some packaged (not fresh) food in my suitcase, will my suitcase light up the TSA machines and be searched ?

We need to bring down some breakfast and snack products with us for our resort room to save some $$'s.

I have two packages of small boxes of cereal, Kellogg's gummy packs in Disney themes, cans of Planters cashew nuts, dried fruit, raisin boxes, and tea bags.

Could I pack them in our suitcases ?
Is it against TSA rules ?
Will my suitcases be searched ?

Please help, we leave soon :goodvibes

Yes, you can pack them, it is not against TSA rules. As for searching, its more likely as some foods are used to hide drugs and gunpowder from dogs. Also, anything that x-ray's strange might cause your bag to be opened.

We make sure we pack things that are LIGHT. It is really easy to end up over the weight limit on bags and end up paying more for the bag. If that's a problem, there are a few grocery delivery services in Orlando, but your list doesn't sound heavy.

We plan to do the same thing. I also plan on carrying some fruit in our carry on baggage,

I now always pack breakfast and snack items when traveling to Disney. It is absolutely allowed.
Sometimes my luggage is searched by TSA, sometimes it's not. Everything is there in the end and it doesn't make me wait longer, etc o it makes no difference to me if it's searched or not.

My husband is on a special diet, I put a thermal bag in one suitcase with cold food and ice packs. Made it down. I just had to make sure it did not go over the fifty lbs.

The page won't let me post links yet, but if you google tsa food, you can find their rules.

This link may help. It seems most food is allowable, so long as it is in your checked bag.

You can also bring food in your carry-on, but it has to be very small, under 3.4 oz.

I had to throw away my unopened jar of peanut butter :sad1:

Was this in carryon or checked baggage? We usually pack a suitcase full of snacks for the way down (we've had no problems with peanut butter in checked baggage), so this way we'll have space for souvenirs on the way home.

It will be fine. We just flew in May and I had a whole suitcase full of food. I had packed coffee, oatmeal, granola bars, goldfish...etc. Everything was fine. It didn't even look like my bag was searched at all. Have a great trip!!

I assume it was in your carry on, since you say that "you" had to throw it away (if it was in checked, you wouldn't be there to throw it away). Peanut butter falls under the liquid/gels rule, in your carry on, it has to be less than 100mL/3.4oz.

Peanut butter is considered a "gel" for whatever reason by the inane TSA smurfs (considering it is only a solid ground down I have no idea how they reached this conclusion). It must have been in a carry-on as I've flown with peanut butter in my checked baggage with no problems.

Last time we went down we packed crackers, some laughing cow cheese, mini donuts, bagels and cream cheese in our suitcase and had no problems. We put the cheese in ziplock bags incase something might leak. Good luck and have a great trip! :)

We always pack food - no problem. We did have one case get opened (we watched them screen it and open it as that how it was temp set up in this small airport) because it was full of baby food jars when ds was a baby! They actually laughed when they saw what it was becuase they were stumped by the x-ray...

Whatever the TSA needs to do to keeps us all safe. That is mostimportant :goodvibes

The OP was asking about checked luggage, where peanut butter is fine, although it may cause your bag to be searched. You must have tried to take peanut butter through security in a carry-on, where it is not allowed, unless you have one of those small individual packaged servings in your 311 bag. Next time, make sure you check tsa.gov to make sure you know what will be allowed.

The TSA searched our bag for Easter candy one trip. I did pack oatmeal however this last trip. You can always mail a package to your resort two weeks before you are going and avoid all the hassle. We ordered Garden Grocer.

We've always packed lots of non perishable food in our checked bags with no problem. Once the snacks are eaten, I love having that space for souveniers on the way home!

By making people throw out peanut butter? Right. :rotfl2: I can't tell you how many times I've seen people get through the "system" (cough) with bottles of other fluid, etc, plus the 3-1-1 rule really does nothing to improve security - but it sure does up the airside revenues! There is a lot that could be done to improve airport security, but the current system sure isn't it.

I was actually planning on packing a food suitcase for this trip since we will be staying in DVC rooms with kitchens for a week. Could you/others offer advice on 1) what you regretted bringing or brought too much of and 2) what you wished you would have brought? I was considering checking a bag of bottled water, but wasn't sure if it would be worth the weight/trouble. In case it matters, we are flying American nonstop from DFW and have enough bag allowances to not be charged for any checked bags (up to 8 bags). Would appreciate any other wisdom anyone could provide on this. Thanks!

What is the rule about liquids in the checkedluggage
