Packing cubes?

I'm considering trying some packing cubes for our next vacation. I've looked at Eagle Creek brand as well as the Ebags brand. Does anyone have any feedback on either brand?

Also where is the cheapest place to purchase? Amazon?

Or if they were a huge waste of money I want to know that too :)

Thanks!

You'll find a lot of threads about this on these boards. It's pretty much split, some people loathe them and only use Ziploc bags because they're "cheaper" (yet they tear easily and have to be replaced, and don't let clothes "breathe"), some people love them because they're so easy to stay organized. I love them because I can "unpack" into the drawers at the hotel without having to unpack a whole bunch of crap. Plus if I'm on a longer trip and am just staying a night in a hotel, I grab my pack it flat toiletry kit (from eBags) and a small cube and that's all I need to bring inside with me.

I highly recommend the eBags brand for anything they have. They offer a 100% lifetime anything guarantee. You probably won't use the large very often, so a set of the multiple sizes plus an extra small or medium set usually works. If you have multiple people packing stuff in one bag, different colors for each person makes life even easier. Ebates gets you discounts, and if you're not in a time crunch sign up for the eBags email and you'll get extra discounts randomly.

Yes, exactly this. Love the ebags brand. I have 3 of the medium cubes and hope to get more this year.

Nordstrom Rack has Eagle Creek packing cubes for half off. It would be worth checking your store if you have one near you!

I absolutely love my eBags packing cubes. I found the eBags website was the cheapest and I have always been able to find a coupon for them.

I like the medium size and I also have a set of the slim ones which are my favorite. I find the large size too large.

Thanks for the replies. I don't know what went wrong with my initial search so I tried again and found a few great threads.

Next question. Do you roll or fold your clothes for the cubes? I'm mainly wondering about shirts. I saw a couple of YouTube vids that showed their tshirts rolled in the cube but that seems like they would be a wrinkled mess?

I roll them, just because they seem to fit better that way. When I do use the large one, I pack it with flat stuff, because it's usually a pair of pants or two and an extra sweatshirt, and those don't roll small enough for the packing cube.

Oh, and the slim ones tend to fit in between the handle slots on rolling luggage. Which makes fantastic use of that otherwise "wasted space" :)

I started a thread asking this very question not too long ago. I ended up buying a set of small, medium and a multi set ebags(though I didn't use the large size) for a 7-day cruise.

I don't know how I had ever packed without these things before! It was soooo easy to fit all my stuff in the limited cabin space. I could just pull out each cube and get what I needed without having to rummage through a whole stack of stuff. It literally took me 3min to unpack and not much longer to pack at the end.

Lots of people told me to try out using ziplocks as it was the same thing and so much cheaper, I'd advise to just try a set of cubes. I did not find the two to be comparable at all. I tried packing once in large ziplocs and I hated it. They would slide around all over the place and didn't lay on top of eachother well in the suitcase. Plus several of them ripped as it was kind of a pain to get in and out of them. And my clothes had a lovely eau de plastique.

I will never go back to traveling without the cubes especially as I do lots of cruises and split stays.

I use one small and two or three mediums for myself. I also combine some of all our stuff into one of the slims. My kids use at least four smalls for each of them. My husband uses a large a medium and a few slims but I don't think that fits all of his stuff. We do not put our formal wear or semi formal wear into a cube. :scratchin:

I use 1 bag per person per day.

We have ebags. Everyone in my family has their own color (medium for adults, small for kids)

Each bag I put an entire outfit down to underwear and socks.

Makes unpacking super easy. Grab a bag (your own color) and wear what's inside.

i'm with everyone else, can't live without them. we each have our own color plus I have a black set and that is only for dirty clothes. I used to just toss all the dirty stuff in whatever bag I had handy and pack it but it just was to much wasted space. now I fold the dirty clothes (assuming I can't do all the laundry before we go home) and put them in the black set. its incredible the difference in space doing this. and when I get home I just toss the bag in with the laundry to clean it for the next time. don't try drying them though, I think there may be some melting or shrinking??
yes, packing cubes are my best travel friend EVER!

I rolled my items and had no wrinkles. It was amazing what could fit in there.

For a seven day cruise I used a small, a medium, and a set of slims. I found the large too large for my needs. For the future I'd like to pick up another set of medium sized eBags. The slim set was great because it fit in areas that would have otherwise been waisted space.

I've always been a ziplock packer prior to discovering eBags and eBags are worth the money. Ziplock bags slide against each other, it's hard to neatly pack clothes in them, and when filled they end up being rounded shapes (as opposed to eBags nice rectangles) so they don't stack neatly.

Hi,
If I purchased the large, flat packing cubes, do you think I could fit a day's worth of clothes for my family of five? I can normally fit them (when it's shorts, tees and a sundress for me) in a 2 gallon ziplock. I would prefer packing cubes as I'm not a big fan of the ziplocks except for sending the kids on a camping trip.

I think it would depend on how big everyone else clothes are. I'd say for my family of four, yes no problem fitting one outfit for each person all in a large. My kids are young and their clothes don't take up much space.

I have been thinking about buying packing cubes for years. After reading several threads here on the DIS as well as countless reviews on eBags and Amazon.....I DID IT! Yesterday I ordered a value set for each member of my family from eBags. I thought it was a decent price for the color and cube combo. It was $40 for 3 slim cubes and a set of sm/med/lg. I got green for DH, canary yellow for one DD, pink for the other DD and aqua for me. Thinking about getting one more set possibly of med or small cubes and maybe one or two packing envelopes for dressier clothes. I will make that decision after playing around with the cubes to see how much can fit in each.

Looking forward to being more organized on our two week trip this summer as well as upcoming vacations....TBD pixiedust:

I'm an ebags fan also. Plus, you can buy through ebates for cash back. I use the cubes all the time, but my DH tried them once and never used them again.
