I've always booked packages but am thinking maybe it would be cheaper to book the room/tickets separately. Any thoughts? Are there advantages to booking a package? The tickets are sooooo much money. I'm thinking I can get them cheaper through Undercover Tourist, but I just don't know.

For us, it is almost ALWAYS cheaper to do AAA discount on the room (or if you get a PIN code, even better!!), and purchase tickets through UT. :thumbsup2

It all depends on what season you are going.

Sometimes we do the package. Once i bought one AP for the discount on the room and food and park hopper for DH and that was cheaper, knowing we wouldn't be back again to reuse the AP.

Sometimes the AAA discount is better on the package, sometimes on room only.

The way I figure it out is by running the various codes through to see prices with package and room only then add on tix prices to the room only.

I would recommend separately -even if you get both from the Disney website! when I was researching our trip in 2009 to DLR, I priced out a package and then hotel only and tickets only. The package was about $140.00 more for the same dates etc. I emailed them to ask what the additional charge was for and got no response. I ended up booking both tickets and hotel (DLH) through Expedia and got a great deal.

If you're paying full price or using a room only discount then it is cheaper to have a room only reservation and buy your tickets from Undercover Tourist by going through the link in the Mousesavers newsletter. That being said, I wouldn't buy the tickets from UT until you know for sure that you won't be wanting to take advantage of some kind of package deal that could come out for your dates such as a free dining or 4/3 type of promotion because those promotions have ticket purchase requirements. Don't buy your tickets until you're sure.

There are only two reasons I can see for booking a package--an extremely good discount or if you want the dining plan. Otherwise, it is NOT ever cheaper--still might not be cheaper with the dining plan.

If you don't want the dining plan and you purchase components separately, you save money. Disney is the most expensive place to purchase tickets. And, everyone has to be on the same ticket. You can find help about learning how to purchase the right ticket(s) HERE, which is a huge help to saving money.

Now, if you want the dining plan, look at it very, very carefully. Saving money isn't saving money if you wouldn't have spent that money in the first place. I'm not sure if that makes any sense, but plan your ideal dining plan and compare your overall costs of that v. what the dining plan would cost you--don't forget tips because if you are ordering more expensive meals to make the dining plan worthwhile, you will up your tip costs. My theory was developed from HERE and the link within it.

Not related directly related to saving money, but cancellation and change fees, along with payment requirements are much more liberal/generous with a room only reservation too! Depending where you are staying, you may have to put down a bigger deposit, but you don't have to pay the total out as much and have more opportunities to adjust without penalty. MouseSavers gives a great overview about if packages are right for you.

I agree that the only real/main reasons to book a package is if you are getting the DDP or some sort of package deal like "Kids Stay/Eat Free", "Free Dining Plan", etc.

If you are a FL resident, AAA member, military, AP/SAP/WSAP holder or DVC you can usually get discounts off the rack rate at the WDW resorts. I've never used Undercover Tourist but I have a SIL that did and she was very pleased with the cost and time it took to get the tickets. If the DDP is a must for your trip than a package is the way you'll have to go.
