We will be staying at the Desert Inn with our son in February. He will be almost 17 months old. We are planning on having a pack n play (or some weird off-brand) shipped to the hotel for him to sleep in. But the reviews are saying the 'mattress' is basically non-existent.

I am wondering what you DISers think - should I order a mattress for it? Fold up a blanket underneath? Or what?

My son currently sleeps in his crib on a VERY firm foam mattress. I don't know how he'd do on something very soft of lumpy.

My daughter slept in a pack and play at daycare for almost two years, and never had any issues doing so (even with a non-existent padding/mattress). We would often lay a thin blanket down, but it really did not provide any extra cushion. Having said that, you will know your child best! Can you borrow one before your trip to try it out with your son?

Another option is to rent one from the place always rent strollers from. Here's the link http://www.citystrollerrentals.com/Disneyland-Stroller-Rentals.html. They are super good about deep cleaning, it's just like having a new one. It comes with a nice thick mattress cover. The cost to add one to a stroller reservation is 15.00, and they deliver free to the hotel. I'm not sure what the cost would be for just the pack and play, you could email them and ask. I have used a pack and play from them once before, and it was really nice.

How often do you travel? Do you plan to have more children? We take a Baby Bjorn Travel Crib everywhere we go. It is around $250 but has a foam mattress and the crib bottom is stabilized on the floor so the mattress if very firm. My son slept in it on vacation until he was over two year old and now my daughter uses it. It fits a pack n play sheet. I highly recommend it. It's very light to carry and sets up well.

This will be our only trip with him as a child. We own two pack n plays at home. We don't want to have to check anything large and bulky on our plane. We will be buying one on amazon.com for the trip and having it shipped to the hotel. But it's not the Graco brand like at home. The reviews mention how crappy the bottom is.

I really didn't want to have to buy a $20 mattress in addition to the $40 'crib' when we won't be bringing them home with us.

I looked up that rental place a while back and I don't think they let you rent just a pack n play. I bet it would be more than $40 for 8 nights though. Our hotel has mini cribs to rent but that would run us $80.
