Pacifier Weaning Help???

We never pushed DD to give up the binky, but my in-laws always made her feel bad, which made me so mad! When she was 3 1/2, she just decided it was for "babies" (part of my in-law influence) and gave up on it. She was only using it for nights, naps and long car rides at that point.

Ok I am gonna go out on a limb here ... Bichon Barb you have have me beat on that binky... but I challenge someone to beat me on this:

I sucked my thumb at bedtime until I was married !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! really ! I was 26 !!!! the only thing that stopped me was the security of him ! I was able to stop soon after I had him to cuddle up against!!!!

yep that'll be me THE THUMB sucker!!! So my MIL wasn't really correct LOL but hey, no harm done !!! and yes, I had an indent of my thumb in my teeth! it fit perfectly, yet you could tell from looking at me .... LOL

Luckily, none of my kids were thumb suckers. A binky is orthodontically correct and certainly seems preferable to thumb sucking. Isn't there a concern that without the binky, the thumb will find its way into the mouth?

Mine was totally accidental, but it worked. I left hers at daycare one Friday when I picked her up (she had it for naptime). She was asking for it so I told her we'd look for her spare. I couldn't find it anywhere. I told her she'd have to sleep without it that night and we'd look in the morning. The night wasn't as bad as I thought. Saturday she woke up and asked for her binky. I told her we'd look later. Saturday night she just went to sleep without it. After that she would ask for it here and there and I'd tell her I couldn't find it, but would look. It's been probably a month or so now and she doesn't even ask for it anymore. BTW, she was 26 months at the time.

Not much help here.

I always swore my kids would not have pacifiers. When DD#1 was colicky, I begged her to take one - she refused.

DD#2 was also colicky and started using a pacifier when she was 4 months old. She had it until she was 3. We limited her to bed time and nap time (it was great for getting her to go to bed!). We were debating when we would take it away permanently. On the day of her third birthday our day care person said she had made Emily throw her "pa" in the garbage. She wasn't all that upset about it so we had her give them up at home, too. We dug them out of the garbage can just in case it was a trial for her, but she did fine after a little while.

Sometimes, when she gets up at night or takes a long time to go to bed, I long for the days when she went to bed willingly to see her "pa."

Well my dd has everyone beat, but I won't tell you how long. Suffice to say, I had my reasons for allowing it.

Anyway, she told me that on such and such a birthday, she'd give it up. I tried to incentivise her do do it earlier. Didn't work. On that birthday, she handed it to me, and it's been gone.

Personally, I think you need to look at your child's needs. You'll see posts here defending kids that thumb-suck forever, but announcing that the evil pacifier has to go by 2? My mom tried to tell me I'd have to pay for braces for my kid because of the pacifier. I told her I'd rather pay for braces than for therapy.

Try the hole in the end. My then 2yo ds bit a hole in the end of his and said it "boke" and I replaced it ONE time. He then proceeded to bite it again with me telling him not to and he had this devilish grin so when he "boke" it again I said, sorry, you broke it, too bad. That was the end of that.
Now this is coming from a mom who just had a thumb crib removed from dd (6yo) today; we'll see how long that thumb stays out of her mouth! So I am obviously not an expert.

Well, I'll be darned.... I thought I would have the record for longest thumb sucker...

The doctor insisted my mom take away my binky when I was just about 2, so I marched into the living room and announced that I was going to suck my thumb.

And suck it I did until I was about 10 and my mom promised me a Cabbage Patch kid when my thumbnail was normal again. I wanted that doll like nothing else, so I quit sucking my thumb and took up my index finger.

Too bad for mom I had her on a technicality.. I got the doll and a new pair of sneakers to boot (no pun intended).

I sucked my index finger until I was 21. I quit on my birthday. I had seen one of those birthing shows where a woman was sucking her thumb in labor and I DID NOT want that to be me.

Happily I can say I lived through 17 hours of labor with out one suck.

We are going through this w/ DD also. The darned nurses in the NICU totally disregarded all of our requests for no artificial nipples of any kind and DD was hooked from about 1 day old.

We're down to bed time only... but I have no idea how to get past that.

Thankfully she hasn't shown any interest in her thumbs. However, I'm not sure if poor Piglet's ears will survive the weaning.

My son would only take one kind of pacifier, it was the "Binky" brand. They became difficult to find and I believe the company stopped making them. On Travis's first birthday he threw his last "Binky" over Niagara Falls. I thought for sure that we were going to have many sleepless nights but the first night, when he asked for his "Binky" and I told him was gone, he just went to sleep.

Sometimes I wonder if <i>I</i> wasn't the one addicted to that "Binky".

Oh, isn't that the truth? It was so easy to just pop it into their mouth, wasn't it? Sometimes I wish we still had it lol.

We went the "cold turkey" route with our daughter on the pacifier and it was relatively painless.

We made her quit really out of necessity - she would use the pacifier so much during the day that large amounts of moisture would accumulate under it and the cold dry Colorado air would chap the skin around her mouth. Poor thing - she looked like she had some sort of disease!

So, after visiting relatives for Christmas just after her 2nd birthday, we said that there would be no more binky when we got back home. She was agreeable to that, and handed it over. Fortunately, she only had one slightly restless night and that was it.

Frankly, making her give up the bottle was WAY tougher. I would hand her a sippy cup instead of her bottle, and she would take a look at it and chuck it across the room!! But we survived it all.

My DD was 5 when she gave up her "nukie". She got a new kitten that keep getting in her bed and chewy it up at night. When she went through all her spares, she had to give it up. Good thing she really loved that kitten.
