I was telling my MIL that we should do the pick a pearl thing at Epcot when we are there in Dec. She said that she would pass on this because she doesn't want to kill an oyster.

I guess I never thought of it that way.........what do you all think?:confused3

I think she must be a vegan who doesn't wear leather shoes or belts, use hand cream made with lanoline, wear eyeshadow that has a sparkle to it, have down-filled coats or pillows, use name-brand lipstick, shampoo, conditioner....(you get the idea). ;)

Too cute, though! I never thought of it that way either, though I do think about the 'reality' of what a chicken egg is, sometimes. :scared:

lol..............she did ask me if I was planning on eating the oyster and I was like.......uhhhhhhhhh............NO.

She does eat meat and wear leather and such so I don't know what the big deal is. She is a huge animal lover though. Once we were at the beach and this little boy had caught a crab and kept it in a bucket by his chair all day. When his family went inside for a break she went over and set the crab free........you should have seen his face when he came back and Mr. Crab was gone......haha

OMG, that is hilarious! :lmao:

I just maybe hitting up that station and murdering an oyster myself, although they are very delicious raw, I'm going for the jewels ;)

I love animals, too. I love 'em in stews, as a main course, sliced thin between two soft pieces of rye bread........

But before everyone has a stroke and accuses me of being heartless, I would never boil, bake or fry those animals we commonly consider pets. They're much nicer in the form God gave them, and much cuddlier that way too. But an oyster? Well....not so much.

My son has a t-shirt that says 'If God didn't want us to eat animals why did He make them out of meat?'. Maybe that would be a good souviner for MIL, and you can keep the pearl to make into a nice necklace. :thumbsup2

I think that if you would have done it anyway and got a huge pearl from the oyster she would have been standing next to you picking out a setting to put the pearl in.

I'm going to have to agree with your MIL. I don't like killing anything, even spiders! (And no, I don't eat meat :P )

Imagine the look on the ladies' face who is working at the pavilion when I say...."I'd like that in a necklace setting and go ahead and pass that oyster over here........I'm going to have it for a snack..........I wonder if they would charge me with a snack credit" lol :rolleyes1

:rotfl2: Why does that sound like something I would say

I couldn't do this either, I am super sensitvie. I do eat meat, do not wear leather that I know of. It is just one of those things, I couldn't pick a lobster or crab and boil it live. I will eat the legs and tails though, just can't do some things.

Hi
Maybe she doesn't buy those products that use animals in them. I try to buy all my cosmetics, detergents and products that aren't tested on animals. I don't eat meat and I would've also let the crab go back into the water. My DD picked a pear last year and had it made into a necklace. I just couldn't do it.:goodvibes

We inquired about this and were told that the oysters are already dead and that it is unlawful for them to have oysters to "kill" for their pearls. Now, I did not inquire about how they "got dead" in the first place...........

That's what I was thinking as I read this thread. I was almost certain they were already dead!

The big deal is, she doesn't see those animals killed, or directly cause their deaths.

I've got a very tastefully-designed t-shirt that says "P.E.T.A. People eating tasty animals".

I love animals, too; however, I can't see getting worked up over an oyster making the ultimate sacrifice to harvest a pearl. I also have a very nice leather purse and had a strip steak for dinner. Obviously, I am the devil incarnate to some people:rolleyes1
