Own at SSR but add on through resale?

After our 2003 trip I started looking into DVC and read the boards etc. In 04 we bought at SSR. I know most advice says too buy were you stay, but I felt I had not tried enough places to make that decision. Although we knew we way may not stay at SSR, I wanted the 50 years with the pre-opening discount and was a bit hesitant to buy resale (not sure why) and figured I would take my chances with wait lists. To make a long story short I would like to add on in the next year or two and I am not sure if I should buy resale at say OKW, which we loved or use the promotions for SSR. My recent experience trying to book at HH has scared me into thinking that the 11 months may get more important in the years to come. Any advice from those of you with multiple contracts?

You can certainly purchase a resale contract -regardless of your original home resort. It can have a different Use Year and will have no minimum number of points to purchase. The advantage with a different home resort is the 11 month priority for reservations.

We own at OKW and HH and have 4 different Use Years. It does take a little more organization to manage the different accounts, but it is very doable. While we have had good success reserving at all DVC resorts within 7 months, it is nice to be able to reserve 11 months ahead at certain times of the year.

You should compare costs for resale and direct purchase and be sure to figure in closing costs for the resale. If it appears a direct purchase might be competitive with resale, let your guide know of your interest. Resale may be better with banked points figured in- especially if you won't need Disney financing. Just do the math and see what works best for your situation.

Enjoy!

You can go through DVC for OKW and they seem to be paying closing costs, but will not have the incentives in place for SSR. of course, the price per point for OKW will be less than SSR, so it would be like getting a $10 off per point incentive.

Many people on here advocate buying where you want to stay. Since you already have SSR, getting a contract for OKW (or any other resort) is a good idea. Diversity is always a positive thing...ok, usually :teeth:

I am confused about buying a previously sold out resort direct from DVC versus resale. Do member guides try to discourage it? When I booked our first trip a had no problem 4 months out for OKW, but did get a waitlist for BCV that came through very quickly. My wife and I love OKW and were not that crazy about BCV. No offense to BCV owners. I have stayed at WL and loved the theming. I want to try HH before I make my add on choice, unless we fall in love with HH we are leaning toward OKW. My favorite non DVC resort is AKL, but I don't think they will ever put DVC units there.

I don't think it's so much that they discourage it as it is there are waitlists and availibility issues. OKW probably isn't too difficult to obtain directly through DVC for example whereas if you want to do an add on at BCV's there is a 2yr long waitlist. You may have an easier time obtaining a resale add on contract depending on where you want to buy as well as it may be less $$...but you'd have to compare it to what disney's price is vs. paying a bit less and paying for the closing costs.

Scoootch probably said it best, but here's my $.007 worth...

Our guide did not discourage us. When we started looking in late 2003, we were at first told we could only get in to SSR, but we could stay anywhere we wanted after we were in (with all the relevant cavets of course). But I got stuck on OKW and told our guide we would go see what we could find on resale. Lo and behold, a few days later our guide calls back and says she has some OKW resale points that just became available. We took a bunch of them and now I'm ParrotArOKW! As it turns out, we later bought at SSR as well.

When you do a second contract direct, but at a new home resort can you get 100 points or does the 150 still apply?

An add-on can be as few as 25 points - even if it's at a different resort. You can add 100 points thru DVC directly, but may have to wait for some Use Years at some of the resorts. Currently, OKW, BWV, HH and VB are more available thru DVC than VWL and BCV. Just call your guide and let them know what you're looking for. They can put you on a waitlist if they don't have what you what immediately.

Good luck!
