Overweight at Universal

Thank you for starting this thread, I have been pouring over threads for several days now trying to find this same info out. I am a plus sized woman, I am struggling hard to lose weight between now and our trip next Sept. but it is going very slowly and I was conserned that I may not loose enough before the trip. I love coasters and other thrill rides and would love to be able to share it with my sons neither have ever been on any really serious thrill rides. I think I can breathe a little bit of a sigh of relief to have some hope that I'll be able to ride most rides.

A man had to get out of his seat on HR3 today because the bar wouldn't close. I thought I heard them say they had a larger seat that they wanted him to try.

HR3 also has a max height requirement. If you're too tall you can't ride :scared1:

We have a family member who is 16 y/o and 6'7". What is HR3 so we can be prepared?

:thumbsup2thanks for all the info, everyone. Does anybody have any more fluffy people tips? I am getting pretty excited!:woohoo:

FYI for Pooh sized COUPLES....

There is only ONE "modified" seat in the modified rows, so if TWO members need a larger seat you WILL BE separated either a few rows behind or on the next coaster...

I will not even attempt DD or Hulk this next trip :-(

The regular seats are pretty roomy anyway so the large seats are comfortable for most 'pooh sized'. We found problems only with Dudley's Ripsaw Falls - but that was because of height, not weight. Those seats literally require you to be able to get your knees around your ears :lmao:

I think having two larger seats together would but good; that said, I'm small and rattled around something awful in the regular seats - I think I may have broken bones smashing myself around in the big seats!

The CMs will do their very best to lock you into those seats. We saw two of them trying to ram down the restraint on a large seat on the Hulk for one guest but they collectively still couldn't do it.

The big seats are easy to identify because they have two seatbelts. They are always one of the 'inner' two seats which means your co-rider will have to sit on the outside. Most other guests are unaware of the fact that there are larger seats so you will have to point it out (probably best to get the larger person to do this as I got some odd looks!)

I am 5'5" and 290. I had a really hard time in Ripsaw Falls and got stuck trying to get in and had on crocs that were slipping on the floor of the ride and couldn't get out. So embarrassing:scared1: I rode in the expanded seats for Hulk and Dueling Dragons and didn't have any problems but did not get to ride with my family who rode on the front row. Didn't bother me but, I think it bothered them that we didn't all ride together. All of the other rides were good.

Sorry to invade this thread but, was wondering if any of you have been to Busch Gardens? We are going this May and while I am trying to lose some weight, I'm afraid I won't lose as much as I need to ride their rides. I asked over on the SeaWorld board and only got 1 response from someone who I thought could have been a little nicer. I've rode everything in disney. Are Busch Gardens roller coaster rides the same as Universal or are they more like disney to accomodate all sizes?

There is a wooden coaster right near the front at Busch Gardens that was a tight fit... DH and I made it though, twice! We had to extend the belt all the way out and buckle it kinda while standing since the buckle slot was so far down in the seat, then lower ourselves before pulling the lap bar down... We were laughing and laughing and they let us ride twice in a row :rotfl:

And then if memory serves me everything else wasnt bad or had modified seats :-)

I am 5'6 and 220ish All my weight is in my belly and back... Here is a pic you people can kinda judge... On this trip I needed help locking DD and Hulk, just a small push from the attendant, modified seat....

omg looking at that picture I am bigger around than both Lisa and Bart!!!

omg

well... ok... so that's was a modified seat person looks like... :lmao:

We went to US in 2008.
I was grateful for all the test seats, it would be nice if more parks had that.
I carry most of my weight in my hips, rear and thighs.
Couldn't fit comfortably on the Dr. Doom Freefall, which my dd wanted to ride. DS didn't want to ride it, so that meant she didn't get to ride.
I squeezed into Dudley, but decided I didn't want to embarrass myself trying to get out of that poorly designed contraption while soaking wet, so my family rode without me.
Even my DH, who is quite average height and weight, had difficulty with that one. I had no issues with getting in and out of this before they installed lap bars.
Had no issues with any other ride, even the kiddie ones.

You look like you are having a great time! So does BG have modified seats on all the coasters except the wooden?

Anyone else have any info on Busch Gardens rides for plus-size? I worry myself to death that I won't be able to fit right up until I get on the ride and usually while I'm worrying about it for months, I'm eating more instead of less.:sad2:

The rollercoasters at BG with modified seating usually have a sign saying which rows. Don't quote me but I think they're usually in rows 3 and 6 of the coaster.

The tighest fit in Universal is the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit.. but then again, everyone carries their body weight differently so it's almost something you have to try for your own. I'm pretty sure the test seats out front are not the modified versions.

DH and I went on all but one (I think the newest big coaster there, coz it was broken, and it was just that woody that gave us a hard time... Not to say we didnt need help with a push by the attendants. :rolleyes1

But remember, everyone's poohness is different... and honestly, every coaster is worth trying, and if you dont fit, such is life, it is what it is, but if you do fit WOOT WOOT!! :woohoo:

Read the above posts... I even fessed up to my weight to give people an idea of someone who is on the cusp of not fitting... :thumbsup2

Sheikra, Montu and Kumba all have the larger seats just like Dragons and Hulk. Scorpion should not be a problem but the seats do not have a lot of leg room.

One problem is the same type of ride can have different belt lengths and seat sizes. Dragons and Montu are both B&M inverted coasters. My local Six Flags park has a B&M inverted coaster as does Hersheypark. At Hersheypark I can fit in a standard size seat without a problem. At Six Flags, I can't even get close to buckling the standard size seat (no larger seats on that ride).

As for Dr. Doom, my local park has the exact same ride system and they got new restraints for it in 2008. They were made much smaller, I could easily fit in 2007 and earlier, in 2008 and 2009 I still fit but had more trouble. I'm not sure if they did the same with Dr. Doom or not.

The test seats are not always accurate either. One coaster at my local park has a test seat for a coaster and I can't fit. Someone on another site told me to try the ride anyway, it was a little of a struggle to get the seat buckled on the actual ride but I fit.

I think the problem rides for the pooh+ shrek+ people (myself included) are the group lapbar ones.. where you get others in your row significantly smaller than you who pull reallllly hard on the bar so they are secure & the bar cuts into you so you feel like its slicing you in half!!

( this was so freakin' embarrasing at dizney california , on one ride they gave my hubby a bumper pillow to put in front of him so the lap bars matched......)
this has been a real battle with some of us. one friend did a solo with a couple foreign kids on spiderman & they squished all to hell, they would NOT stop pulling on that bar. he ended up very ill feeling the enitre day from that.
I am usually the largest in my family row on these things, & for some reason on the mummy even though I try to pull the bar scure some of me, just doesn't fin wiht that,, so when we hit that "big" bump & end up getting almost tossed out. yea i know enthusuasts call it flying time, but I hate hate HATE it. I wanna fell secure..... give me a shoulder harness anyday.

Quite a lot of the lap-bar rides at US/IOA have 'individual' lap bars, especially on fast rides like The Mummy or on rides where adults ride with children like the Dr Seuss trolley ride. It's obviously frustrating when there's a size difference: either someone gets squished or someone's rattling around in their seats and smacking against the lapbar when the ride jolts (I was pretty battered by the time we were through with Spiderman as I rode with larger people and the lap bar was a good 4" from my legs which leads to a fair impact when the ride jolts).

I am a big guy myself but have not really had trouble fitting in the rides except for the hulk which is really not that uncomfortable but dueling dragons is a diffrent story cause its a real tight fit for me but manageable
