I'm curious about the process when a port is visited for 2 consecutive days. I realize that processes may well differ by port, but we're looking at a cruise next year that will spend 2 days in Valletta, Malta. My husband asked how that would work, and I didn't know.

When the ship is in a port for 2 days, is there typically an "all aboard" time on the first day and a "debarkation" time on the second day? I don't think the ship would take passengers back all through the night, but I haven't cruised on a ship with an overnight visit before. I know the "double dip" cruises don't stay docked at Castaway Cay overnight, but that may be different in more active ports.

Same for Europe as @PAGA2003, I had two overnights last year and the gangway & terminal were open the entire time. Some people got back late after seeing shows; I left the Dream around 0530am the second morning.

One thing to be aware of for Europe - I don’t remember the specifics but the EU/Schengen has some rules that those without an EU/Schengen passport could not spend the night somewhere off ship. My guess is it might be something to do with immigration as guests do not go thru immigration when debarking at a port stop.

I don't advocate rule breaking, but I'm curious: do hotels in the EU make you show a passport and visa when you check in?

I believe they asked for the passport for ID, I wasn’t asked for a visa but also didn’t need a visa.

Yes they do. They could also check if you have a stamp from entry.

But I think the bigger issue is that the ship knows that you didn’t come back overnight and might be obliged to report the irregularity.

Make sure that you wake up early and go out on deck for the sail in to Valletta. It is so beautiful with the sun rising and painting the limestone as you cruise into the large bay.

They do on passports not sure about visas as we haven't needed one yet. Also Spain just upped what information about each guest is required to be collected by hotels (things like home address, etc IIRC).

Sorta related but we're doing an excursion in Spain on our upcoming cruise for the Alhambra (port stop is Malaga) and that one is connected to each individual person's passport information including specific number so they know we're there despite us not overnighting in Spain.
