Overlapping Reservations?

We wanted to do a week stay in December staying at a deluxe resort, but with the lack of availability, we settled on Dec. 5-12 at Port Orleans Riverside. My wife if fine with that, but I really would prefer a deluxe resort.
A couple of deluxe resorts are available for half the week, such as OKW for the first three days of our trip. We hadn't considered a split stay and that's something we need to think about. But in the meantime, I don't want to lose out on an available reservation before it's taken.

So is it possible to book the OKW room for the first three nights while keeping the entire POR reservation for a few days while we ponder our choices? I don't want to mess anything up.
Also, if this is possible, how long do you have to cancel for full refund?
These are all cash reservations for just the room only.

If you put one in your name and one in your wife's (I wouldn't add the other to the resort until you make your plans) then you'd be able to. I know precovid; you could not hold more than 1 reservation for the same night and I imagine it's the same now. If you're doing room only (I don't think there are any deals for packages currently- could be wrong, but if not, there's no reason to do a package, especially considering how obsolete the need for park reservations seem to be currently) then yoi could cancel for a full refund up to around 5ish days before checkin...although when I called about our room only for next month the CM said I had til day of checkin because of Covid, but I thought that had stolled, but either way it'll buy you quite a bit of time.

Yes, you can do that. For the OKW resort, you might want to use a different name as the lead guest. Use your middle name, a nickname or your wife's name. It probably wouldn't matter, but there have been rare instances where Disney has canceled a second reservation.

For room only reservations, full payment is due 5 days before checkin and cancelation with full refund can be made up until 5 days prior as well.

To add to what Steve said, go ahead and reserve it - I have had 3 overlapping reservations at one time for similar reasons. Once we figured out where we wanted to stay we cancelled one, shortened the other two and made it into a split stay. All were Room Only reservations and require one nights deposit. All were reserved in my name with my wife as guest 1. We later added my son to the reservations (with additional $35 per day). Also, I had to call in to shorten the one reservation as it wouldn't allow me to do it online, I think because that room category with discount was sold out.

Currently sitting on two reservations waiting to see if a discount and/or club level becomes available for that week. Depending on what happens, we can then decide which one, or combination we want to go with.

@Fangorn, the 5 days is to get a refund. The rest is due on check in. If you have a credit card on file, that will get charged on check in date.

And yes, I have also had more than 1 reservation at a time. Like the PP, I have even had 3 trying to figure out dates & discounts. Even after the reopening. I had a YC CL room booked in April. I booked a regular YC room for the same dates when discounts came out. I held both not knowing what was happening with CL. At 60 days out, I got a call from Signature Services letting me know CL would not be operating & giving me options. I told her to just cancel the CL since I had a regular room booked with the discount. She had no idea I had another reservation & did not comment on it At All.

I also currently have reservations at 2 different resorts for the same time later this year as we try to coordinate with family members.

We had reservations at the Holiday Inn, Pop Century, and Polynesian last year. We thought we cancelled Pop and changed to Poly but we had actually just added Poly. MyDisneyExperience let my husband be the lead guest on all 3. We only booked the trip in July for August (Covid) but just check the cancellation policy on when you can cancel.

When you called to shorten your stay because you could not do it online, did they give you a hard time? And did they keep the same price for the other night? We booked our entire stay at Movies, but decided to splurge and spend our last day/night at AKL so currently I have both booked for that night since Movies is now sold out during my stay so I cant switch it.. and i have too much to do in everyday life to spend 2+ hours on the phone on hold..

No, they did not give me a hard time, just modified it for me. Yes, it was same price. You may also be able to do it through the chat instead of calling in.

We currently have several reservations sitting on MDE with a deposit paid while we figure out what we're doing. I can't cancel one of them because it has our park tickets/reservations linked to it and I'm holding out hope for APs going on sale between now and then (November). The others we're deciding soon and releasing the rest. There's no problem on the app side of things to have multiple hotel reservations while you figure things out. You can cancel until the balance is due - a month for packages or something shorter (a week? two weeks? I forget) if it's just hotel.
