Over The Top Halloween Decoration

I love decorating for Halloween. I put out lights and pumpkins, cute things. I know that some people like the scary side of Halloween and that's fine. If so, they should go to the haunted houses and have a blast. But, IMHO they should not inflict that sort of thing on little kids.

DD just told me that there was a guy at one house in our neighborhood that was scaring all of the little kids. He was dressed up like Jason and stood in an area on his porch with a black light. When the kids got close, he would charge at them with a knife. Some parents warned DD and her friend about him. That is way over the top. I can't imagine how that would scare little ones.

I agree with you. That is why my DD does not like to trick or treat, she does not like scary stuff. We had some of my neices over, we set up a tent in the front yard and they were doing face painting and temp tattoes. One of their friends was doing palm readings, but they were not dressed scary.

How about this...when we were finishing up trick or treating and driving to pick up supper, we saw a guy chasing some kids with a chainsaw. I'm not kidding. I actually heard the motor. He chased them right across a busy street.

Totally an accident waiting to happen...I couldn't get out of there fast enough.

That is just sick. There are so many weirdos out there!

This year I thought I would be "scary", I stood between our 2 big evergreens on the rock path with our "cemetary" out front. I was dressed completely in white, dress, cape , gloves, hair, makeup and was holding a black light so I was glowing a ghostly blue. Everytime someone would come by I would start to giggle or end up saying to the kids from our school, "Hi it's me....Mrs.####--are you having fun?" and I would just chatter away----I'm sure I must have scared someone acting like that! \
Some people are just way over the top though, last year we had a parent who dressed as a ghoul who chased our DD6 and DS8 (at the time) and they were with their dad!! He had a baseball bat and he terrified the kids by lunging and swinging at all 3 of them---this wasn't even near his home..he was just out randomly terrifying young kids in our town---we had no idea it was a parent until one of his kids was laughing about how cool their dad was...yeah he's soooo cool.....dork!!

A guy two doors down went all out. He decorated his doorway with lights and a strobe and lit jack o'lanterns. He also had a moving ghoul on the door and eerie music and sound effects. He sat in a chair all dressed in black with some kind of mask that made his eyes glow.

He lunged at the older kids (and me when I went to look) but stayed still if little kids approached. He seemed to be the hit of the street.

When we were kids, my brother made a Frankenstein out of clothes stuffed with newspaper and a plastic mask (the old fashioned kind that was very cartoonish, only covered the front of the face, and was held on with a rubber band). He set him on the front lawn on a bicycle. We didn't do that again because it scared so many little kids and they didn't want to come up to our porch.

I think sometimes people get carried away and forget that Halloween is celebrated by very small children.

My older boys (29, 26, and 22) have had a haunted house at my home for the past 15 years. In my driveway they put up some tarps like a room with 3 walls and have a black light and strobe inside along with a smoke machine. One son sat outside in a scarecrow costume with a burlap bag on his head and they other two were spooky type costumes. My DIL and one son's GF were dressed as witches. I had my son's costume from a party he went to on myself, a blow up grandma head and body with my legs, with me as the baby with blow up feet on her back in a backpack. Everyone loved the costume and kept asking how I made the blow up lady walk around. IT was really fun this year because last year I was sick in bed and didn't get to do the halloween thing.
The kids came to the scarecrow and he jumped up and yelled, then the other two sons came out and jumped at the kids.
The kids love it. Last year my son set this up at his home and I was asked over and over the next day where the haunted house was.
Some of the regulars come by even though they were not trick or treating anymore just to see what my boys had done this year.
I sit on the front porch and give candy to the little ones who shouldn't go near the driveway. I tell the little ones they don't have to go up the driveway but some of them do anyway and like it.
There is tons of screaming, but all done in fun. Halloween is my oldest son's favorite holiday and now that he has two boys of his own he will continue his tradition. Peggie

Our neighbors scared my son badly a few years ago. (He jumped back so far he fell over and then ended up crying.) I know it wasn't intended to scare him THAT badly, but some kid are just more easily scared than others. She offered to have DS help her decorate the next year, so that he could see that it was just "pretend" stuff. It made him feel better. I personally just try to avoid the houses that look really scary. I don't like Halloween anyhow, so no big loss, as far as I am concerned............P
