Everytime I ride theme parks twirls or roller coasters with my kids. I am the one that spoil it for everybody because I will get sick (all the time). My oldest (11) loves roller coasters, & he knows that I will not ride those. My dh will ride with him, but my girls will want to ride dumbo & etc while the boys ride the roller coasters. I want to enjoy the rides with the kids without getting sick & ruin the park day. What over-the-counter meds have you guys have used & it works for you? Thanks in advance...

I would try plain old ginger capsules. I find that it works fine ( I use it for sea sickness) and does not have any side effects like Dramamine or similar medicine.

I use Drammamine II. It lasts longer than the original and makes you less drowsy. There seems to be a drowsiness window, and if I am walking around for that hour,I get through it. It's better than being nauseous.

Bonine and ginger candies are your friends
However, the Bonine can make you a bit drowsy

Do you get the ginger at a regular supermarket or need to go to specialty store? I would love to escape the drowsy.

You can get it at Walmart, or any place that sells the herbal/natural remedies. The capsules are the best, in my opinion, you don't taste the strong ginger (there can be with a slight taste when you burp, tho:goodvibes )

My doctor suggested I try meclazine before my cruise (I was worried about seasickness) and it worked fine. It also works for nausea-inducing rides, like the Teacups. It is non-prescription, but you have to ask the pharmacist for it. It's very inexpensive, about $5 for a hundred. Zero drowsiness for me.

I would recommend trying it before you leave to see how it affects you. Start with half or a quarter dose. Some people really have a response to it and get relief with very little medication. Even though they say less drowsy formula, they still are both likely to make you drowsy. Dramamine is like Benadryl -- which you can actually use for nausea, people don't always know that. Bonine is Meclizine (Antivert) I have Meniere's which causes vertigo and subsequently nausea...so I really have to watch. I found capsacin (like a teaspoon of Tasbasco sauce) really can quell my nausea...it's because Capsacin calms down the stomach believe it or not. Your best best is not to watch things go by. Focus on a small knob or something on the ride and try to shut off your periphery. Gingerale is good...Vernor's is better because it's got a stronger ginger, but is too sweet for me. Ginger capsules are available near the vitamins/supplements.

If none of the OTC stuff ends up working for you, I highly recommend the prescription patches that go behind your ear. My past trip in December was my first with the patch and it was the first in a long time I wasn't getting sick on anything that moved. Good luck!

I always have to take motion sickness meds when I'm on a cruise. I like to take it as a preventative rather than after the fact. I always take ginger root pills with breakfast and lunch - you can get them at any vitamin store. Here are the ones I took: http://www.vitaminworld.com/pages/f...4D0793F7DB0C57A7C3A7&PID=217&CID=702&CPID=312

I found that the patch didn't work, Bonine and Dramamine made me sleepy and I have never tried the non-drowsy Dramamine but that could keep you awake if you take it late in the day. They also have the wristbands called Sea Bands which people rave about but I've never tried.

are you gett8ing sick or getting dizzy?

if you are getting dizzy try zyrtec it's for allergies. it will help reduce the fluid in your ear which may give you some relief from the rides.

I had tried the bonines etc.. and had a little relief. i was getting vertigo and eyes would hurt on the rides..just dizzy I guess you would say

My one doctor suggested the zyrtec. so I use one of those a day and I add some bonine as needed. It has made a huge difference

I still wont do tea cups and cant watch the carousel. But i can do the coasters and enjoy them now

I use non-drowsy dramamine and it allows me to ride almost everything. I have had motion sickness all of my life. I have been sick on boats, planes, trains, cars. You name it, it can make me sick. The only two things I don't do is the teacups and everest. I probably could ride the teacups if it wasn't spun, but the kids like to spin it! I learned everest the hard way last year. Going backwards in the dark did me in and I it had been a long time since my last dose of medicine. I can do star tours, but sometimes look away from the screen at a fixed point. I have also done the easy side of mission space (nothing on this earth could get me on the hard side - well maybe large amounts of money but that is it). I have tried ginger and it did absolutely nothing for me. Zero. Nada. So many people tout it but I strongly recommend you try things out first if you can. Again I have been getting sick for as long as I can remember and I am in my 40's so I have tried lots of stuff! I thought the bonine was ok (basically the exact same thing as dramamine) but for some reason the non-drowsy dramamine seems like my best fit, so you need to try them for your self. There is also a perscription patch that according to my doctor works wonders and would allow me to try a cruise, but I have have been too scared to ever try that. My worst nightmare (and my Dh's!) is too be stuck on a boat, with no way to get off and a sick wife with 3 little kids!

Meclizine is Bonine and for most it is less sedating than Dramamine

I keep some of these:

or I carry some candied ginger:

Thank you all for the recommendations. I will try the ginger roots pill first because I have tried them when I had a very bad morning sickeness.

Where to get candied ginger?
