Over a billion for Magic Bands, that is awesome!!!!!!!

I was told by two different CMs on the phone that you can only get 3 FPs per day per park using the Magic Band, and that you can't get any with your paper (or plastic) annual pass if you link it to your MB. Can anyone confirm this? If so, no testing for us. Heck, we have 3 FPs before lunch. We're not the leisurely stroll thru the park family - I'm the dad running to Space Mountain for FPs while the kids ride Thunder Mountain.

They are telling guests they can't but currently you can, in fact, get paper FP with your AP. not sure when/if they will disable it, but it is supposed to be a backup in case people have issues with their MB.

this might not happen anymore-- the paper fp.s run out very quickly. you probably won't pick up any past noon-- and they will be for the end of the day.

Depending on what percentage of FP slots are given to FP+ the FP- return times could well be hours out very quickly. Then the question is will we be seeing TSMM issue of FPs being gone for the day before lunch at most e-ticket rides?

Edit- I see beer dave beat me to it.

That is quite the impressive list from 2000-2010. Soarin and Mission Space are the only attractions worth noting, and one of the above was just a transplant from CA.

Now lets list what happened from 1990-2000

Disney's Animal Kingdom
Disney's Boardwalk
Twilight Zone Tower of Terror
Rock and Roller Coaster
Splash Mountain
Disney's Wilderness Lodge
Disney's Yacht and Beach Club Resorts
Disney's Eagle Pines and Ospry Ridge Golf Courses. (EP has been demolished and Ospry has been leased to 4 seasons, yeah current team Disney!!!!!! Thanks again)
Blizzard Beach
Swan and Dolphin
Disney Vacation Club
Disney Vacation Club Resort (OKW)
Dixie Landings and Port Orleans French Quarter
All Star Value Resorts
Celebration Florida
Disney Cruise Line
Walt Disney World Speed Way
Coronado Springs
Illuminations
Fantasmic
Downtown Disney West Side
Disney Quest

These are just some of the major things that happened at WDW during this time period. If I wanted to scrap the pot like you and add minor attractions like Stich and Triceratops Spin (Woo Whoooo!!!!!!! A real home run). This list would go on and on and on.

Disney is the only company I can think of that can milk everything for what it is worth, charge more, nickel and dime everything to death. And still get away with it.

Don't forget the reclassification of 10-year-olds as 'adults' in the Disney dining universe. Now that was a real family-friendly move.

Thanks Disney, looks like you hit another home run here for you guests. Why bother spending that money in the parks to enhance the guest experience when you can do this?????

Bob Iger you warm my heart. Boy that Michael Eisner was a real jerk, wasn't he?

yeah, great, they are ruining the park experience

Really there are two areas the Disney is struggling, FP+ (at the ride entrances themselves) and program integration.

The bands themselves are working well in the resorts, restaurants and main entrances.

Truthfully I can't stand this response and I see it everywhere here. We all have the right to criticize those things that bother us and yet still go to and enjoy the parks. It's not really so simple IMO.

I can't imagine that all that many people even KNOW about the magic bands yet and can't believe that so many are excited to try them. Yet. :)

Do come back when it bombs and rub it in everyone's faces. Like someone said, also come back if it works. I expect it to be a glitchy mess for a while and probably involve more planning than I like but Disney will probably make it work just fine.

I ain't going to say it. Ohhh that hurts.

Just wondering here.................is it reported anywhere from Disney that the FP+ system cost $1 billion to develop????

Although I dont like to pay adult prices for my DS10, I have to admit he does eat way more than me. Perhaps its not that unfair after all.

That has been the "float"...I don't know if any Disney talking heads have verified that.

But they haven't disputed it either...

I think there's at least some fire behind the smoke here

Morning Locked out!

I have heard that figure all over this board, yet no one has been able to say if they have seen it in writing or as you say a talking head anywhere!

Now to be fair, Disney rarely bothers to comment on our deep discussions here;)

I agree there is likely some fire, this must have taken a lot of man-hours and work to set up, but a billion seems really high.

Tonk,

I wasn't really referring to boards...I was thinking more in newspapers and business publications...there have been a number of articles written about this.

But I'm not sure the cost figures are more than educated guess rumors at this point.

I think the billion came from Disney financial reports but I am not sure. The billion wasn't for magic bands or for FP+, it is for a complete change in many things to an rfid system. Research, development, and implementation around the world. What we have seen so far is the tip of the iceberg. More will come and it will vastly change the experience. They are already talking about rides and places being interactive and knowing who you are due to rfid. There will be short range scan points for FP+ and long range rfid scanners to follow where traffic is moving. There is so many possibilites that are amazing and can help Disney manage and respond to crowd movements. It will be good for them and us. 20 years from now they will be licensing the technology to other theme parks.

A billion is a small investment for what this will bring to the theme park experience.

OK now.........this makes much more sense!

Its not just the MB's at WDW, Its a hell of a lot more in tech and equipment, etc.:thumbsup2

I agree, the possibilities are endless to improve things in the parks. We have to give the program a chance to have the kinks removed.

We also have to see what the final set up is and not listen to rumors and stories that people post and have not been confirmed.

OK fair enough!

If you look back, Yellowstonetim post makes a lot of sense as to how massive the overall program and project is and that it is so much more then MB'S!

I agree, it's only 80 cents per park guest over 10 years. To say nothing about hotel and shopping guest impact.

Still hoping they start adding billions into more attractions/parks as it is getting too crowded-at least at WDW.

Do a Google search for "Orlando Sentinel disney nextgen" and you'll get quite a few hits that cite the billion dollar figure. The oldest reference appears to be a story dating back to 2010 which mentions unnamed sources. However it's been repeated ad nauseum in subsequent coverage.

I'm not going to claim the Sentinel's reputation is beyond reproach, but I doubt that info would make it through repeated story reviews by editors and fact checkers if they weren't confident in its accuracy.

Also I'm pretty sure that Iger/Staggs/Rasulo have been questioned on the billion dollar figure during their quarterly earnings calls with investors, and they validated the number.
