Has anyone tried this? I'm tempted since regular methods - soft scrub, magic eraser, scrubbing bubbles, comet - don't work on my 30 year old tub anymore. I don't want to etch the tub, but I'm running out of ideas. Thanks for any help anyone has!

I really wouldn't use the oven cleaner. I can't even use them to clean my oven the fumes are so bad:sad2:

Maybe you can reglaze it?

clr has a bathroom cleaner in a yellow spray bottle.. that stuff cleans anything. spray it on. wait a few minutes and junk comes right off. smells nasty but works.

My mom used to pour slightly dilluted bleach into the tub and let it sit for an hour or so. I find that products containing bleach take out the stains better than anything else.

oven cleaner has a warning about how it will damage certain surfaces-i would'nt be surprised if it would'nt severly damage a tub (could eat right through those cheap fiberglass types, pock and mar porceline over cast iron).

the other concern is what it will do to your plumbing:scared1: that stuff is not made to be washed down a drain.

There is this stuff called Zud that works really well.

If your tub is porcelain, I have heard that toilet bowl cleaner works well on tough stains, only it is VERY caustic, so wear gloves and be careful.

Before you try anything like that, try vinegar and baking soda. Dump a lot of baking soda I use about 2-3 cups more if it is really dirty. Then pour vinegar enough to make a paste. Then take a cloth and polish the tub. It will take off soap scum off with ease and no nasty fumes.

I asked a similar question recently. I needed to clean a tub that had old rust stains, very, very bad rust stains.

I had tried Soft Scrub, that Scrubbing Bubbles cleaner, Kaboom, etc.

Nothing would touch it. So I came on here and asked. Someone said Super Iron Out so I bought that, tried it, didn't touch it.

Someone said The Works Toilet Bowl Cleaner (Wal-Mart), not the Tub & Shower Cleaner. So I tried that. Oh. My. Goodness. It "ate" the rust and I just wiped it away. Awesome!!

The tub I needed to clean was old too, like you said yours is. I'm not sure how many years old but it was in the main bathroom when the house was remodeled in 1974 and they put it upstairs. So it is more than 35 years old, maybe 50? I'm not sure.

But it looks so nice now with those nasty rust stains gone!

Give it a try, I bet you'll get good results!

I never used The Works on my tub, but it did an amazing job in my toilet. There were some hard water stains in the bottom that I never thought would come out. I used every product on the market and figured we'd have to live with the stains until we replaced the toilet.

Bought The Works because it was on sale in ShopRite, and wow! Those stains came right out.

I really do not think using oven cleaner is a good idea. It's very caustic, and as a PP said, you could damage your pipes with it.

In the days before I had a self-cleaning oven (which I swear I will never go without again), I burned my lip with Easy Off. I was wiping the oven down and got an itch. I scratched it with my gloved finger and ouch! Big burn on my upper lip. That is brutal stuff and should never be used outside an oven.

if you use the toilet bowl cleaner, be sure not to get it on any of the faucets or if you have a shower door. It will stain the finish.

My husband used oven cleaner to clean the shower when he was in college. He reports it worked great. HOWEVER! He neglected to tell his roommate who proceeded to take a shower. The result...his roommate's feet got burned and he was unimpressed with the cleanliness of the shower. Lesson learned...don't use oven cleaner.
