Ovarian Cyst Question....

What usually happens when a cyst on an ovary ruptures? Anyone know?? Does it require surgery?

DD lives 2 hours away and they think she had a cyst rupture yesterday. She was suppose to try to get an appt for an ultrasound today and I am still waiting to hear what is happening!

It depends on how big the cyst was. I had that happen about 15 years ago and they ended up doing emergency surgery. Since she was all right to make an appointment, she might not have to have surgery. Good luck and let us know what's happening.

They have her on a narcotic pain killer and she was throwing up last night. I feel bad 'cause I don't know anything about this type of situation and have nothing but encouragement to offer her! She went to a walk-in clinic yesterday after being in pain most of the day. I wondered if she should have gone to the emergency room Thanks for your help!!

I had surgery but when I went into surgery I had a positive preg test so they thought I had tubal preg. Which I did not, I had a ruptured ovary.

I have had 4 surgeries due to ovarian cysts, 2 due to ruptures. The most recent was April and I was taken to surgery within 2 hrs due to it hemorraging (it also helps I work in the hospital and i knew my history). I can normally tell when I have one rupture and when I need to come in for pain management. I have been dealing with this for 13yrs and with this last surgery I tried to talk the Dr into taking the d**n ovary but he wouldn't. I hope this is a one time occurance for her and will keep her in my thoughts. Let us know what they find out.

Ok, thanks! I did not realize it could happen more than one time, either. I guess this will be one lesson she will be teaching me about as she goes through it. I will post as soon as I know something. I guess I am mentally preparing for having to drive down there if she has to have surgery.

I hope everything turns out OK for her. I just had a second ultrasound yesterday to check on an ovarian cyst they saw a couple months ago. It got bigger, but they said it's "fluid filled" and not to worry.

Will it hurt if it ruptures? I know nothing about this stuff.

I get them all the time on my right side. Sharp cramps, wave like, like labor pain but on the side of the abdomon. By the time they are ready to burst, nausea starts. Pain when they burst so bad, I can't breathe for a few seconds. Once they burst, pain subsides. I thought it was awful, but surgery has never been mentioned, so I guess I am doing better than I thought.

Although they are incredibly painful, it's really more of a nuisence for me than anything else. I was asleep last month, rolled over, and woke up full force - one had popped when I rolled. Took my breathe away, but then it was over. Luckily I only get 1 or 2 a year.

I was just talking to a friend on the phone and she was saying these exact things also. She said she gets them about twice a year and they are unbearably painful but that the pain begins to subside after the cyst bursts. She says someone may not always have to have surgery with them...she says she has not had any surgeries after several ruptures over the years. She says the doctor does a pregnancy test to make sure it is not a tubal pregnancy, which would require surgery.

I finally called DD and she was asleep. She had the ultrasound this morning and said they would get back to her with the results this afternoon....but still have not heard anything. Maybe no news is good news....

My 15 dd just had a cyst that burst on her ovaries. She started feeling sweating and nausease on Sunday, by Wednesday she was in a ton of pain. Took her to urgent care and they did an ultra sound and found the cyst had burst. She was still in a lot of pain on Friday, so they advised to take her back in. We saw a surgeon, they thought for sure she was having an appendicitus. Nope.

They put her on Tylenol with codeine every 6 hours. She would freak out, knowing the pain would come back if she didn't take the medicine. On Saturday, she had diahrea so bad, I had to go get medicine to control that.

She will freak out if she knows she could get another cyst and have that happen. Her pediatrician told me sometimes they put you on the pill for a few months to let the cyst heal on the ovary so it don't happen each month when you ovulate. I guess that is when the cyst is suppose to be forming.

Like an above poster mentioned mine tends to hurt most when I start to ovulate, its like having menstrual cramps twice a month, some months are worse than others. This last time when cyst ruptured I has some minor cramping in the morning and some diahrea, and then all of a sudden while I was pre-admitting a pt for surgery I stood up and doubled over (I scared the poor young soldier to death I think). I was able to finish up but I could tell I needed more than pain management, I was having problems sitting directly on my bottom (rectal pressure, sorry if TMI) and thats how the Dr was able to tell I was hemoraging. If she's not on Birth control pills that will probably be the first thing they will suggest to help the cysts. The only thing that helped control mine for a few years was having a baby - lol!

Usually a Dr. likes to DNC the area. DNC's can hurt, but they usually give you a local to ease the pain.

Spoke to DD for a few minutes tonight. She says she is already on BCPs. She said they still have not told her what they found in the ultrasound. At least it does not seem to be an emergency. I shared with her what has been posted here and she was thankful for the information. I know she does not want another baby! We'll see what information tomorrow brings....

I just spoke to DD and it sounds like she has been experiencing exactly what has been posted on this thread! She said the pain is subsiding and they called her about the ultrasound results. They told her they can tell that a cyst ruptured and that she has fluid from it in the pelvic cavity. I guess they pretty much said, 'now you know what a rupture feels like', so she should expect it to happen again, as posted above. They said the ovary appears to be healing well so they aren't going to do anything else.

So goes another saga in womanhood, I guess! We had a brief discussion about appropriate health insurance and annual exams as she could expect this to happen again in the future.....**sigh**

Well, I never had anything like this happen so I was terribly worried about her. Thank you to everyone who provided information and experiences and helped me get through this with her. She was relieved to hear the information I gave her from these posts before she had heard more from the doctor!
