Hi all. We are in the process of planning a trip in '17. The other couple has an Intervale time share. I don't think they can trade in for a DVC resort, correct? I can get a two bedroom or two studios for us so we don't have to be in the same room but not sure I want to use 300 pts doing that.....not sure if I would be compensated! They tend to be thrifty!
Is there any other way they can get their own studio, other than renting points from David's? Just trying to be proactive and get answers now, rather than at the 11 month mark!!!

Yes, they can call CRO and book a room in cash, if one is available for the time period you are going.

Yep, I doubt they're going to do that. Way too expensive for them. I guess they'll probably just stay with us in two studios. Fingers crossed they compensate us somehow. That's way too many points to just hand out.

Having them pay for meals or your DDP is one way to get paid.

That's how we've worked it in the past, with other people. But, who knows with this couple. I guess their choices will be....
1. pay cash thru Disney and pay $4100
2. rent thru Davids and pay around $2000
3. pay me at $10 a point and it will be $1400

Would have been easier if they used RCI. But, looks like a heart to heart is going to happen. I'm not out to make a profit but I'll be darned if I use 140 pts for their studio on top of 140 for mine!!!
Thanks everyone.

Even then you may have issues. We don't take guests to Disney anymore for several reasons but this observation pretty much sums it up.

Sitting at the SSR bus stop, we overheard an extended family talking about their vacation. "What's makes her think that she gets to plan everything, my family is getting tired of being told what to do". "So far the food has been crap, you would think that she could pick some good restaurants". "What's she making you pay, you know that she is using points that she gets for free".

A lady with a baby stroller comes up and the group greets her with a good morning, where are we going today?

No, DVC no longer works with Interval. It sounds like you're setting yourself up. IMO these type of issues are best addressed directly and specifically up front as it's almost a guarantee that they will not see the same value as you do and this is likely to be an issue later. IMO if you just proceed, assume they won't compensate you at all and take anything they do as grave. Otherwise work out a plan ahead to time based on the studio pricing even if you do a 2 BR. An alternative would be for them to get a 2 or 3 BR unit and all of you stay off site together and save your points for later then you can compensate them accordingly.

Do you absolutely have to/want to stay at the same resort? Just reading the tone of your post makes me wonder if it would be better for everyone if each couple stays where they own and you just meet up at the parks, assuming they can use their timeshare points to book something in the Orlando area.

That's my issue as well! I did send out an email last night, giving them the options as far as cost goes. Told them they can book directly thru Disney and pay $4000, rent thru Davids and pay $2000 or have me book it and pay me and it will cost them $1400. So, we'll see what happens.

No, being in the same resort isn't the issue. Love them to pieces...he's my dd's godfather and dh's best friend from high school. But I did tell them that if they wanted something on their own, I would add them to my DVC reservation so they could use EMHs. I also told them what a value and a moderate would cost them, as compared to the $140 a night BWV would cost.
So, the ball is in their court. I would much rather have it all out there now, and if they decide that's too much and they don't want to go, then so be it!

Why don't they just trade into something thru interval? All of the Marriott properties are really nice. Also, Sheraton Vistana trades through Interval. They could even potentially trade for a 2 or 3 bedroom at one of those properties and you all can stay together saving all of your points for another trip.

You could then maybe book one night in a studio for each of you to get the 60 day priority for FP.

They may do that....who knows. Me? I have zero interest in staying off-site! That's why I paid for my points. I just don't think it's reasonable of them to count on my basically paying for their resort stay. And I have a feeling that's what they were hoping for. I haven't heard a word from them since emailing them on Monday night!

Maybe it's just me but I can't believe anyone would expect their friends to pay for their hotel (well maybe if your friend was a multimillionaire lol)-hopefully this doesn't put a strain on your relationship with them

Yeah, one would think so. But...who knows. I would have thought I would get an email back by now. I know that the one time I traveled to WDW, and stayed in a two bedroom at BWV, it was with another mom and her dd. It was a very special trip. I planned on just having them there, as my guest! Nope, that didn't happen. I was told that unless they were allowed to pay, they weren't going! Same with every other person we traveled with. Even now...when I travel with a friend, and she has used her points for a studio, I buy her a few dinners or such. She invited me along, after booking, for company, and never expected me to pay. But, it's just the polite thing to do.
Maybe I'll just wait a bit and then drop my 'asking price' down. Don't want any hard feelings over this.

I would think at a bare minimum they should be willing to reimburse your MF for those points-I mean that's money out of your own pocket/travel budget for the year-I could see if maybe you had already booked larger accommodations, had extra room and invited them to tag along thinking they weren't expected to pay anything-but you are planning to actually book them their own room requiring you to use double the points you need to

That's kind of my feeling. I just can't imagine anyone thinking I would be ok with basically paying over a thousand dollars for their room! Sure, I would be using my points, but at least I wouldn't have to pay for park passes or food.
It may workout best if they book their room and I book ours. Time will tell.

Every situation is different but I find many who assume that a timeshare is free once you own it. You'd think other timeshare people wouldn't though. The big issue I see with other timeshare owners is they often have the sense that one 2 BR unit is the same as another in value. My guess is the other party is now upset and thinking someone is trying to take advantage of them by charging them as stated. The neutral position when multiple families are jointly traveling to DVC (not one renting to the other) is what is the extra points cost DIRECTLY attributed to the other party. In this case the points for a studio for those nights times a monetary factor of no more than $10 and as low as direct costs of he MF. Another option is to travel such that each party covers the costs for their timeshare which is fair even though the monetary value may not even up. Rather than opening this up for hard feelings it's often to either state one doesn't have the points to use OR just to cover it depending on how badly they won't it to happen and the intricacies of the two groups.

My hubby's cousin just asked to come on our next Disney trip. Her daughter and my son are the same age, and get along. I've met her a total of 5 times.

When she asked, I gave her a breakdown of costs. She's welcome to join but I told her how much it is to rent at David's. I havent heard from her since.

I guess she knew we hosted a huge group trip for out wedding party last year-- 12 std studio rooms at BWV plus our 1bd. It was a pseudo honeymoon/wedding party celebration (our kids were 6mo and 4 yrs old at the time).

My SILs parents own at BCV. She said a ton of friends and random extended family have asked to be taken on their Disney trips. She gets mad- they have three adult kids, all with kids ages 3-12. With what extra points?

People don't realize each point is "worth" at the minimum the maintenance fee. I value my points at $13/pt bc I one at BLT and BWV. Stick to your guns. I've told my sister and brother, both of whom have kids that are similar in age to mine- and they are very close-- that I'll charge them $10/pt but can rent them out at $13/pt to a broker. They agreed and understood.

Don't get taken advantaged of, but explain nicely.... That you can rent to a broker for x amount, but you will charge them y amount-- and your maintenance fees are z amount.

Well.......they got back to me! And all is well. I think they were trying to digest the costs!! Said they had looked at Intervale but nothing there for WDW. So, they thought that two studios would be good. So, WDW for a week and then possibly heading to Key West for a few days as well.
Thank heaven that worked out! I hate being put in that position. I don't mind a day or two on me, but not a week!!! Yes, I'll be using the points but at least some of my costs will be taken care of.
I'm so glad others feel the same way!

That's great, enjoy your trip.

I would definitely let friends know the cost up front and make sure they didn't think it was free.

My biggest concern with friends though is that they back out last minute and expect you to give them their money back. If I were you I would let them know a date where you can no longer cancel. Perhaps it's when you can no longer bank, or perhaps when the points would go to holding, but I would let them know when you need the money, and when you can't refund it.
