We are moving our daughter into School in New York City next week.
We will arrive Thurs..leave Sunday. As always, the Hotel rates are NUTS but more than that, $55 pr day to park our car, which we need, and that's with no in and out privileges. If we take it out, which they are not happy with at all, it's another $55 each time:scared1:
So-I am having a thought. If we stayed somewhere decent, across the river in NJ..we could arrive Thurs nite, then the next morning drop her car full of belongings at the Apt and head back to NJ to do the IKEA, TARGET,SAMS CLUB etc stuff and check into a Hotel Friday nite not requiring the car until we leave again Sunday? If we stay in her locale..we can get back and forth easily, hoping not to need our car again after the major trip??

Will it work?
Anyone know a Hotel that's easy to get to the city from (well--kinda easy LOL) the Friday a.m?

THANKS!!!!:thumbsup2

You mentioned Sams Club, there is one in Secaucus and there are a bunch of hotels in the area. I think they are cheaper than the ones in Jersey City and Hoboken which are right by the PATH train and ferry. Since you will be using a car to transport stuff in, Secaucus could be the way to go. It's close to the Lincoln Tunnel, however, there will probably be traffic, although Fridays the traffic can be pretty light in the summer.

I think there is an Ikea that is somewhere around there so you don't have to get on the turnpike to that one.

ETA: It's in Paramus.

The Sheraton in Lincoln Harbor.....ferry right to the city.

By dropping the car full of stuff and leaving it- my only opinion is to NOT leave all your stuff in the car! Unload it into the apartment.

And I am surprised about you saying the lot won't let you in and out. What hotel is that? we never have that problem.

As I am reading what you said you are looking for a hotel for ONE NIGHT in NJ? For Thursday night? Then you would be staying in NYC near her school? You want to be close to the Ikea?

They do run a shuttle bus from NYC to the Ikea(it's free)
Free Shuttle Buses From Manhattan!

On Saturdays and Sundays the free IKEA Elizabeth(round trip only) shuttle bus, operates out of the Port Authority Terminal located in New York City, at Eighth Ave and 42nd St. Buses will depart from Gate #5 on the lower concourse near Academy Bus line. Departures are on the half hour with service available on Saturdays & Sundays between 10:00am - 2:30pm. Return trips are also on the half hour with service available from noon to 6:00pm.

You won't want to stay around the Ikea- it's a very industrial area. Personally the hassle of going into and out of the city make a city stay a no brainer for me.

But if you are talking one night- and you'll have a car- really you could stay a touch further out- Like in short hills

Sorry I'm not much help.

I just saw they have the Sheraton Lincoln Harbor for $129 on expedia. I would grab that!!!! I've always seen it for $259. Then you can take the Ferry in when you don't want to use the car.

My friend's mom always stays there when she is in town.

I think she's talking about the Edison one?

Yes but if she goes to Paramus you don't have to pay the turnpike toll (or drive down 1&9 with all those trucks) and it's actually closer. Plus there are tons more stores in Paramus to get all their shopping needs done.

the other one is actually in Elizabeth.

You know I have never been to Paramus. (wasn't that mall sinking?:rotfl2:) it seems packed whenever we drive by- but I might have to suck it up if it's a good shopping spot. What else is over there?

There's several malls, this one is HUGE:

Just about every box store you can think of, Crate & Barrel, The Container Store. It's more like, what doesn't Paramus have? lol. The only thing is everything is closed on Sundays. Would be best to hit Paramus on Friday and anywhere else on Saturday.

The plan I am thinking..leave here Thurs a.m arriving early evening. I think first of all we will head to her apt as we will only have her personal belongings..clothes etc and we need the car empty for the next day!!
Then we head to wherever we are booked for that night...

Next day-head to Sams Club for supplies, IKEA for Sofa, Table etc, and Target for whatever! I am sure-between stops-we will have to unload the car! Though we did talk about maybe renting a U-Haul trailer to hitch up and do it all in one fell swoop!! Parking that around her apt in Soho should be great fun!:sad2: That's a whole other issue!!!

I have 'tentative' bookings at 3 Hotels. The Marriott Downtown on Lafayette ($55 per day-no In and Out) the Hilton Garden Inn-Tribeca ($35 per day-self-park but if you take the car out-they charge another $35) and the Royalton-more mid town-($56 per day-no In and Out--$56 again if you do)...so seems to be pretty much most of the Hotels adopting this idea. I almost booked a few more that also had the same parking policy.

I appreciate the good tips here!
Thank you!

Let us know how it all goes. :goodvibes

Can't tell you about traffic from Long Island City...
but the mariott in secaucus is about 5 minutes from the Lincoln Tunnel.... (that is without traffic of course, with traffic it varies)
There is a Sam's Club nearby and you can just hop on the Turnpike South to get to IKEA.

Both of the Hyatts are nice. The Jersey City one is right by the PATH train which gets you to the world trade center in 5 minutes. You can also get to 33rd street pretty quickly but you have to change trains. The Jersey City one you are right by the Holland tunnel which puts you closer to SoHO. There is a Target down the street. If you stay there I would then pick the Elizabeth Ikea. But still the closest Sam's Club is in Secaucus. There is a BJ's down the road, maybe they will let you have a guest pass for a day?

The only thing at that Hyatt is that since it is so close to the train and you are in the financial district, not sure if parking is free.

We will have our car and will drive over carloads and I am sure MORE carloads to our daughters apt and that is in Soho...sooooo sounds like the one in Jersey City is the better choice. The next day..we will check into a Hotel near her..
Wow-complicated stuff! So appreciative of the help!

Okay good, I was just going to say I would double check for you that Sunday to make sure there are no street fairs by the hotel because sometimes that happens. Last weekend there was one and we had to detour a bit. But if you are staying in the city at that point then it shouldn't be an issue. :)

If you end up staying at the Jersey City one I can help you out with any questions (like the best route into the tunnel) because I live around there.
