Outerbanks??

I posted this awhile ago and got some very helpful info and now I know some more specifics of where exactly we are staying and I am hoping for some more suggestions. We will be staying in the Frisco area beginning July 19th. Any ideas of activities (besides going to the beach)? I am also interested in any areas to go shopping. I have never been there before. Thanks!!!!

I love the Outer Banks of NC, and I wish so much I was going this year!!!!! We usually stay in Waves or Salvo. I driven through Frisco, and it is almost the farthest point south on Hatteras Island. It is a pretty laid-back area, but some things to do in that area would be visiting the Hatteras Lighthouse, or taking the car ferry to Ocracoke. Ocracoke is nice, with small shops and another lighthouse, but not a huge place or anything. There are some nice restaurants in the area - the Tides is the one we always eat at.

As for serious shopping, you may have to drive way north to find anything besides small gift shops, as I seem to remember the Frisco area as pretty quiet. Well, enjoy the beach!!

Just stayed in Frisco at Easter time for the first time. It is very quiet there and there is not much to do but the beach, which is nice. Frisco has a fishing pier which you can pay to fish from. There is a good bbq joint there, and a little fish place. We bought some shrimp and fish from the seafood market there to. If you go down the road to avon there are some grocery stores and a tiny bit of shopping. You aren't far from the light house, and you can take the ferry to Ocracoke, where you can do alot of shopping and eating. We didn't go there since I was watching alot of boys on a surf trip. Watch the sun. It can be deceptive. It might feel cool and breezy but we all got a heck of a burn like tourists our second day there. Oh, really cool, you can have a fire on the beach at night. You need to be in the high tide line, and so many feet from a residence. So bring or buy some wood and marshmallows. If you feel ambitious you could turn it into a clam bake. This was probably our favorite thing there.
When you get in, stock up on groceries or you will be forever be going back and forth to avon.

If you're in to history, go to Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills to the Wright Brothers Memorial. I just hopped over to Outerbanks.com and they have links to all the towns on the islands.

When I was in college we used to stay in Avon which is not too far from Frisco. Bear in mind that this was in the early 90s and things have probably changed since then. As others have said, there isn't a whole lot to do there other than the beaches. The more "fun" areas tend to be further north in Nags Head and Kitty Hawk.

Definitely try to check out Cape Hatteras Light - you might remember it as the lighthouse that was moved a few years back. It is really lovely.

I also recommend a trip to Ocracoke Island. You need to take the ferry and then if you drive to the town there are a bunch of little boutique-y shops. They're kind of new-agey (or at least they were when I went) but had some neat stuff.

There is also a bakery on the main road in Buxton - I can't remember the name but they made these things called Apple Uglies that were very yummy. Horribly greasy and sweet but yummy, lol.


There was an outlet mall in South Nags Head - nothing unusual but possibly something to do on a rainy day.

Oh, and you can also take a trip over the bridge to Manteo. If you go during the season, they put on a show, "The Lost Colony" which is supposed to be pretty good. There is also a German brew-pub restaurant, The Weeping Radish. They do tours (with samples) and there is also a Christmas shop next door.

You can go to the aquarium that's near Manteo and say hello to my DD Lauren who's interning there this summer. It's close to the Weeping Radish that PammyK mentioned.

Wow... thanks for all the great suggestions!!! I really appreciate it!!! My friend is a lighthouse nut so I am sure we will take a trip there and Ocrocoake sounds right up our alley!!
