Hi all,
We are heading south from CT to the Outer Banks this summer and I have no idea what to expect. We just booked the trip and we are staying oceanfront in Rodanthe. Anyone have any advice/suggestions?? It's me, DH, DS (14), DS (13) and DS (10).
Thanks!

Rodanthe is on Hatteras, isn't it? We've stayed in Avon three times, and I think we've driven through Rodanthe to get there.

Hatteras Island is very laid back. We love it. It will not be crowded at the beach. We spend most of our days just hanging out on the beach. I think there are places to learn to surf, but my kids have never been old enough to try that.

We do take the ferry to Ocracoke once a vacation. Your car goes on the ferry! Ocracoke is a cute little town to walk around and eat lunch. We then find a deserted beach spot and play in the water. The waves are usually pretty big there.

We've gone crabbing on the sound side but have never had any luck.

In Avon we like to eat at Dirty Dicks and the Mad Crabber for seafood. Dolphin Den has good key lime pie.

We also climb to the top of the Hatteras light house. But, really for the most part, we just play on the beach and hang out as a family.

When are you going to be there? It's the perfect place for boys. The surf is rough and you HAVE to get them to read and understand what to do if they get caught in a riptide. There are no lifeguards on the beach. It's really important to keep watch and be up on riptide procedures.
We've stayed oceanfront in Rodanthe several times. It's wonderful!! I get up for sunrise and sit on the deck in my robe and sometimes a blanket with a pot of tea, watching for dolphins and some mornings I take pics of dawn. We usually rent surfboards because DS has taken lessons-that's how we got to know the only dentist on the island very well-so loves to surf. Our favorite surf shop on the island is in Buxton and called Natural Art Surf Shop. There are several young surfers who work there and they share info with DS about where to surf. We also buy some clothes there every year. There is a nice little surf shop in Rodanthe too. The Hot Tuna is a good, cheap restaurant that turns into a bar later with Karaoke twice a week. Lisa's pizza is good, not cheap. Atlantic Coast Cafe has great carry out and very casual eat in. St. Waves Seafood and Produce in the same shopping center as the post office in Waves has really good spiced shrimp, crab cakes and their keylime pie is good too! Right beside the big kite store(might be Kitty Hawk Kites) and upstairs is a restaurant called Good Winds. Pretty good food, good views at sunset. The other good sunset spot on the sound is a little gazebo behind Sunset Resort which is on the sound across from Pamlico Station shopping center. We stay in those condos sometimes. The gazebo has steps into the sound. We kayak from there. Stop at Chicamacomico Life Saving Station with your kids. Once a week-maybe Thursday, they have a reenactment of an old fashioned drill. It's cool. Ocean Atlantic Rentals can deliver almost anything you want to your rental the day you arrive. Bikes, grills, chairs, umbrellas with stands and sand anchors-the beach is VERY windy! The National Park Service in Buxton, Bodie Island and Ocracoke run family type activities every day. One of our favorites has been the seigning on the sound program. You wade into the sound with water shoes and nets, bringing up cool stuff and the ranger or guide has a talk with you about it. Take loads of cold water/drinks, hats and sunblock whenever you leave your house because you never know when you'll find an opportunity. Take your beach towels and wear your suits. There is a theatre in Avon for a rainy day but I recommend you take a board game, a deck of cards and a few DVDs with you. We're pretty crazy and we take a game platform to hook up in one of the bedrooms. I know-bad, lol! I don't just turn them lose on it but if they're sunburned or sick or it's rained for two days straight-it comes in handy. We always ferry to Ocracoke at least once. We love renting a golf cart and touring the island, eat and drink at the Jolly roger on Silver Lake right in town and spend several hours on the beach there. It's one of the most beautiful and deserted beaches I have ever seen. When you're doing Ocracoke, you HAVE to get to the ferry early, before 9am. It takes 40 minutes once you are loaded. The ride is fun! The shops on Ocracoke are neat, little boutiques. My husband always buys a shirt at the hemp shop across from the bookstore-don't know the correct names of these shops.
Shelling is best on Ocracoke but you can find some cool shells on hatteras too. My favorite little restaurant for families is very casual and at the entrance to the beach road back to the Hatteras Lighthouse. It's called Angelos. There is a big game arcade in the back so take some fives and ones to cash in for tokens. My husband and I always get cheese calzones there. They are huge!!! pm me with whatever questions you might have. Oh, there's a sports bar called Finnegans in Buxton too. Last-The Orange Blossom Bakery in Buxton(I know it's far from Rodanthe but it's worth the drive) has these amazing apple fritters called Apple Uglies. People drive down from Kitty Hawk to get them and if you want them warm, you have to get there by 7:3oam, maybe earlier. If you're not there that early, they may be sold out. We always prepay the day before and they hold them for us. Not many people realize that can be done. Once every vacation, we rent a 4WD vehicle and drive on the beach. There are only a few places that can be done and early in the summer those are very limited due to nesting of some birds that the Audobon and the NPS have declared endangered. The locals are at war with the NPS over this so you'll see signs about it. I like to drive on in the evening after people start going home. the drive on spots are again south of Avon and mostly Buxton to Hatteras. Ask at a tackle shop about what's open for driving on but do not do it unless you have 4WD-seriously, the sand is deep and it costs a fortune to be towed off the beach. Grocery is in Avon-Food Lion. Best to shop very early Sunday or Monday morning. Saturday and Sunday afternoons are so crowded you think you're in line for Rolling Stones tickets and it's the last concert they'll every do. If you can bring some things with you and pickup a few things like milk and eggs for the first two days, you'll like Food Lion much better. I'm going to sleep now. Like I said, pm me. This is the longest post I've ever done. I should turn it in for a grade. :)

Hope you have fun, we love going to the Outer Banks, been there a few times. We usually stay more north near Kitty Hawk, it is more crowded then where you are going. I will parrot the other posts and tell you to visit Ocrakoke. The ferry is a lot of fun, and a nice little island. Also consider going north for the day and hanging out in Roanoke, they have a lot to do, including a small aquarium if you have younger Kids, they have touch tanks and such. Also a good Idea if you head north for one day, do Roanoke and then spend sunset at Jocky Ridge State park. It is a park that has cool giant sand dunes. Believe me, it sounds boring but they are giant and fun to play on and fly kites on and great sunsets. Everyone I told to do this thought it would be boring but when they went they loved it. They do close at Sunset so get there a couple of hours before.

HAVE FUN.

I just reread your post, your kids are a little to old for the Aquarium unless they love sea life, but Jocky Ridge will still be cool, and you may want to show them the Wright Brothers Memorial.

Thanks so much for all the replies!!! We are very excited. The house we are staying in was in the movie Nights in Rodanthe. It has been relocated and renovated and we are excited to see it. I love all the advice and tips and I am printing out this thread. The riptide makes me a little nervous since my boys are used to the bay at Cape Cod. I have to make sure they know not to swim out far at all. Anyone have any comments on the traffic getting onto the Outer Banks. We are planning to leave CT at midnight and drive through the night. We should hit the Boner Bridge by 11:30 am. Even if we sit for a bit, it's okay because we can't check in until 3:00. Thanks again!!!:cool1:

We stayed in Rodanthe a few years ago. There's really not much at all in Rodanthe, but it is very nice and peaceful. It's very pretty, and we had a really good time. It's within driving distance of fun activities, however I remember the closest grocery store, being a pretty good distance away (thinking like a half hour south.) There used to be a weather webcam in Rodanthe that I used to bring up and watch for a few mins., not sure if it's still up though.

ETA: We did the aquarium in Roanoke last year, and it is small, but my kids had a lot of fun with it. The sand dunes are also fun, but be careful about the sand. It can get really hot (some ppl. take their shoes off, and you'll see them running for the shaded parts.) I'd try to go in the morning, before it gets too hot, if possible. There are some lighthouses around as well. My kids really liked doing those too. Our group also went canoeing in the sound (water on the opposite side of the ocean) one year, and they had a lot of fun with that too.

Sorry to say this, but it is terrible on the weekends. You might be a little earlier than we have ever been so hopefully it will be better. We usually stop at John's Drive-In in Nags Head for lunch. It is just a little shack across the street from the beach, but they have the best milkshakes. Parking is horrible. My DH usually circles a few times.

All the craziness of the driving will make you appreciate the quiet of Hatteras!

In regards to grocery stores, there is a big one on the south end of Avon. However, my favorite grocery store is The Village Grocery. It is small and has some unique stuff. We don't buy a lot there, but I like to go at least once.

The traffic horror stories are the reason we decided to drive through the night rather than leaving around 4am as we originally planned. Leaving at 4am would put us to the bridge area around 4pm and I do not want to sit in traffic while I could be enjoying our beach house. If we sit even for a couple hours around noon, oh well. As for the comments that there is not a lot to do in Rodanthe, that is the reason we picked it! We really just want to relax and enjoy the beach in front of our rental. The restaurant suggestions are great, keep em coming. We are going to do some food shopping here before we leave and bring a big cooler because we had heard that the grocery store is small and crowded! Thanks so much for all this valuable info!
