outer banks nc in october?

we think we'd like to go during this time of year. has anyone been during this time? where's a good place to stay? how are the crowds? the search i did gave more info. about regular season not off season. thanks for any help.

We've gone there frequently in the fall. The rates are cheap, crowds are light, and the weather can be beautiful BUT you run the risk of having your trip impacted by hurricanes. We've stayed in Waves, South Nags Head and Duck (our personal favorite.)

My family is from the OBX and my brother still lives there. In October the crowds are less, you still have some of the fishing crowd but not so much the beach goers. You *may* be impacted by hurricanes, but more likely you may have cool, stormy weather alternating with warm sunny days. October weather can be very unpredictable. Personally, I'd go for it. I love the OBX in the fall.

thanks for the info. and encouragement. i'm from nc and understand about the hurricane possibilities. we have a beach house in brunswick county but haven't been to the outerbanks since i was a teen (too long ago). i want to avoid the crowds if possible. are the regular exhibits and most of the restaurants open then?

In September and October we've found most restaurants and stores open, except for some of the small mom & pop types. Grocery stores are open and they even have a Wal Mart and a Home Depot there now. I'm not sure if things like the Lost Colony play on Mantoe are still going on in the fall. We're pretty lazy slugs when we go down there. We rent a house and only go out when we get tired of cooking and watching the waves.

We definitely go when the crowds are gone...either Sept/Oct or April/May. We live in a busy resort area so when we vacation we like the slower pace.
