Our Waitress Actually Sat at our Table!!!!

I've had waiters sit down to take my order before - no problem. I would think it was very strange if they set down our food and then joined us at mealtime.
ITA.

OP, I would have reacted the same way. Just like we have personal space bubbles, many of us also have time constraints. If you're a stranger, keep the chatty stuff down to a minimum.

I've seen them sit down to take our order--normally when it's busy or really loud. But to sit down while we're eating to chat? I'd be apalled! Unless I expressly invited them, who would presume to just plop down at someone's table and start gabbing?

Bizarre...

Oh, and Miss Smarty Pants PhD, we talked about you at Trader Joes today when Jake insisted on buying the sesame noodles. I told my kids that I read about them on the DIS boards, which of course they laughed at. Jake did get excited when I told him that you have a girl about your age. Watch out for him! I showed Jake her picture and he agrees that she's cute! :teeth:

Yes I think of you too at Trader Joes. Funny what a typo can do. Tell Jake thanks, I think so too. :goodvibes

As mentioned above, Outback Steakhouse actually encourages the waitstaff to sit at an open chair. Around here Applebee's does the same thing. Also Hooter's girls do it as well.

I hate when the wait staff kneal down to take my order...drives me crazy. If they sat at my table I would die...Lucky for me we always get a booth so I can block them!

Crazy. that would be a sure no tip from me. I might even write why on the bill.

Ive had this happen a few times. It doesn't bother me unless they ask me to scooch over.

This wouldn't bother me so much if we were on a family outing, but I would be kind of ticked if DH and I went out on a "date night" and had someone sitting with us for a long period of time. We get little enough time alone.

We had this happen at a small family rest. in Niagra Falls last year and ended up getting some really great tips that only locals knew- like how to avoid traffic standstills on back streets etc. Before the dinner was over the owner/cook ended up at our table to. It was a fun dinner.

I have waitressed and, yes, it is hard work and you're on your feet but it never would have occurred to me to sit at a table. I'm all for maintaing a polite distance. I don't want wait staff to sit with me or chat me up. I don't want store clerks to call me by name once they see my credit card. My DH and I tend to avoid places that encourage this kind of instant familiarity. If restaurants are suggesting this to their employees, they should also be training them to read people better so they don't bug people who would rather be left alone.
