I am so bummed. We were planning to go to Disney the first week in November of next year because my daughter has 3 days off from school that week. We want to go off season because of the heat and crowds but I don't want to take my daughter out for a full 5 days. So that was the perfect week because my other daughter will be 1 by then and my other daughter won't miss a full week of school. Well my husband's nephew decides to change his wedding date and is now getting married that Friday of the week we want to be away! I can't wait till 2010 to go, this is so depressing.

You don't want to go Jersey Week anyway.

Sorry your plans got ruined. I hope you can find another time to go that will work for your family.

A lot of people from NJ go that week because schools are closed for 2 days for a teachers' convention and then some kids even have that Tuesday off for Election day.

How old is your dd? I never was given any problems taking my kids out of elementary school - every teacher was fine with it! You might want to ask her teacher for good/bad weeks. Now that my oldest is in middle school, I'm kicking myself for not doing it more often!

She'll be in first grade next year but she is younger than the rest of the kids since she started school at 4. The cutoff for school is on her birthday so she just made it. So mainly I didn't want her to become behind. I don't know who her teacher will be next year but maybe I can ask some of the mothers of first graders to see what they think. The other problem is my husband works in retail so when he has his inventory at work he is blocked out vacation time for several weeks (like 6) and we never know exactly when it is. Its usually in October some time.

I would love to skip it! If it wasn't my husband's nephew we would. Plus they had asked my daughter to be in it. That of course was when it was set for 10/17!

Count me as another who would say, "Sorry, we've got plans for that week!" and skip the wedding.

Your DD will have other days off from school. Your nephew will only (hopefully) have 1 wedding. Tehy didn't set out t ruin your plans, so don't take it that way. Go to the wedding and enjoy their day and go to WDW another time.

Is there some way to have the best of both worlds?

Take DD out of school the Friday before - head to Disney then leave there on Thursday to head to wherever for nephew's wedding on Friday?

I guess that kind of defeats the purpose of trying to schedule the trip so she won't miss a whole week, but if my calculations are right, she'd still only miss 3 days of school and you'd still get almost a week's vacation at Disney.

I personally wouldn't skip the wedding but I can understand being disappointed if your original plans don't come to fruition. Hopefully you can find something that works out for you!

I agree. This is a wedding. Hopefully for nephew a once in a lifetime event & he's asked their DD to be a part of this special day. Disney will still be there after the wedding. It may not be so easy to repair the hurt feelings if you 'ditch' the wedding to go to Disney.

If it was my family I would skip the wedding IF my DD was not asked to take part, but she is so I guess you are committed. My DS is 5 and in the 1st grade (Bahamian system is a year ahead of US). I didnt want to take him out of school afraid he would miss something, but now I regret not going in early Nov (we will be there over Christmas). His teacher made a blanket statement that she doesn't mind if the kids are out of school when it comes to traveling because they do learn a lot...and WDW has a lot of learning opportunity!!! I say take you DD out of school. She can make up the work or do it ahead of time (teachers should have their lesson plans at least one week a head)...my guess she wouldn't mind a little more homework for the chance to go the the World!

thanks everyone for your support! We are driving so we can't come back the day before the wedding. Plus I'm not sure when the rehearsal is and my daughter would need to be there for that. I found out my husband's cousin was also going that week and has to cancel for the wedding. I guess it also bothers me because the wedding was set for another day and they recently changed. We are now looking at going maybe the last week of August. I think week of 8/30 before school starts since Labor Day is late this year. I imagine though its still pretty crowded and awful hot? Then we are thinking of maybe taking her out for all 5 days in October sometime. My birthday is in October so then I could take advantage of the free on your birthday!

Hi Minnie,
I know this--look at my location, I am also in NJ. My DS has the entire week off every year. I was just curious to know why the poster before me made the comment that he/she did about not wanting to go during Jersey Week, as though there was something negative to be said about it....:rolleyes1

I agree with everyone else. Skip the wedding and with your original plans.:thumbsup2
