We were privvy to getting the dining plan free for our trip in Oct. 05' After having it once, we are hooked!
Honestly, for a family of 4, who likes to eat, this is the best deal Disney offers IMHO. I think that almost anyone who gets it can get a great deal from it.
True there is a lot of food, but it is so flexible that it allows you to allocate credits as you see fit. For example, my sons eat a very light breakfast, so we buy 1 meal OOP that they share (still food leftover). By doing that twice (costing $10.00 total) we were able to use those credits toward the Aloha Dinner show (costs 2 TS per person) although we never made it though.
At all character meals, kids are charged a TS which is perfect for us, as these meals are the only ones they actually eat enough at to qualify as eating.
In any event, see if it's right for you. If you're not big eaters or don't do any TS, then it may not work, but for us, it is a necessity!!!
edited to add...the CM's we encountered actually encouraged us to take the desserts with us. After 2 days of that and lots of uneaten desserts, we didn't take to go's anymore
