Our Tasting Turned Out to be 6 Courses! A Sept 2014 DR - Complete!

I'm really enjoying your reviews and can't wait to read more! I had a weekend trip to F&W with my sister and cousin a couple of weeks ago. I opted for the beef taco and my sister got the shrimp one. I SOO wish I had gotten the shrimp. The beef was good but I don't really care for corn tortillas. Maybe next time I'll actually read the FULL description! :rotfl: It's all good though because I'm going back in 13 days and I'll be enjoying a SHRIMP taco this time!!!

Thanks! I made the same "mistake" the first time. I thought, ribeye vs. shrimp? Why ribeye of course! And then I went and tasted that shrimp taco and realized what everyone was raving about!

Saturday morning we had our alarms set and were groggily awoken before sunrise. Oddly, during this time of year in Florida the sun does not rise until close to 7 a.m., if not later. The early wake up call was necessary to get ready for our breakfast! On top of that, it was Dapper Day and we had to look our best!

For those of you who may not know, Dapper Day is an unofficial holiday celebrated twice each year in Florida. It was actually started in Anaheim at Disneyland, but over the years it has expanded to multiple days and an expo at Disneyland to include dates in Florida and even Paris! The idea is to celebrate great style in the theme parks that harkens back to the days when families would show up looking, well, dapper.

There are many ways guests will do this, dressing in their “Sunday best” in all styles, from vintage to contemporary. You will see all sorts of styles and ensembles, but it is not meant to be cosplay or costumes. I had heard about Dapper Day from a student who was completing their College Program through my Internship course at the University and I had always secretly hoped to be able to attend one day. Imagine my excitement and surprise when I found out we would be in WDW for Dapper Day this year! Although Dapper Day takes place at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, one day while searching for ADR’s I stumbled upon a pre-park open Crystal Palace reservation. What could be better than strolling down Main Street, looking dapper, and enjoying a lovely breakfast before our Wedding Expo? Nothing, that’s what.

With that out of the way lets get to the meal. Since we were headed to the Grand Floridian after our breakfast we chose to drive to the Grand to drop off the car. We had to take the boat to the Magic Kingdom, because the resort monorail wasn’t scheduled to start until 8:30 that day and our reservation was at 8:15. When we arrived a boat had just left (of course!) and we were stuck waiting for the next one. As per usual, they took their sweet time getting a 2nd boat running and I, a person who is perpetually early for everything, did my fair share of nervous chattering. Luckily, the boat did arrive and we made it to the Magic Kingdom with time to spare. We checked in with the early reservation guy and strolled into the park.

Although there wasn’t much time before 8:15 we did stop to take a few pictures. Many cast members, especially the young ones, know about Dapper Day and were excited to see us and a few other dapper families that morning.

After a few castle pics, we turned left at what used to be the Tip Board and came upon our destination.

We waited less than 10 minutes before our name was called! Since the Crystal Palace can be notoriously slow at seating, this was good. On the way to being seated they gave us the character spiel and introduced us to our waitress. We are not character people and were here for the food, not the characters, so we quickly placed our drink orders and headed to the buffet. The seater was like, wait, Pooh is 2 tables away...no, that’s actually our cue to hit the buffet, but thanks!

We did not take any photos of the buffet itself, but I think our plates just about covered everything.

Kathy's first plate was fruit and a little cottage cheese.

She also got some eggs, bacon, and sausage. And some syrup to dip the sausage in. Kathy also got the potato casserole thing that she said was no good. It had no flavor and just wasn't her favorite item.

Kathy's plate here includes the puffed french toast, pooh's breakfast lasagna, and eggs. Kathy doesn't love this puffed french toast as much as others, but it is one of her must-do's at this buffet. It is too sweet for me!

This is my first plate. I believe that is a denver omelet breakfast pizza, cinnamon roll, and fruit. The pizza was good and I liked that the cinnamon roll was a smaller size. I hate to fill up on pastries on a buffet, but I like a little taste.

My second plate was a biscuit and gravy, eggs, the daily frittata, and a sausage link. The biscuit and gravy were yummy, but I really liked the frittata. The eggs here are pretty good, but I just preferred them with a little peppers and other fun things in them.

I finished things off with some breakfast lasagna. The last time I ate here this was very good. Surprising because I don't normally like items like this. However, this batch was not my favorite. It was too sweet, but the general flavors still work together and I will continue to get some when I eat breakfast here.

The breakfast sufficiently filled us up. I enjoy the outside of this restaurant and the breakfast food is good as well, but for some reason I just don’t love Crystal Palace. The decor isn’t really my style and it’s always a madhouse, so that is certainly a contributing factor. That and I am not a Pooh fan, so the characters are not necessarily the draw for us here. I would still recommend it for a breakfast in the Magic Kingdom. The characters come around 1 by 1 and they do their best to move around the room at a good pace. We saw all the characters while we were seated except for Eeyore, who we had just missed. If you are planning on a pre-open breakfast to see all the characters AND make it out by the time the park opens it will be a very, very tight squeeze. We had a couple of families who were visibly upset and nearly yelling because Tigger “skipped” them (he didn’t, he just went on break and then came back to the table he ended on), and he was (of course) the only character they came to see and they wanted to get over to Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. The CM’s handled it well (and I’m sure it happens every day), but something to be aware of if this is going to be a strategy for your family.

Once we completed our breakfast at the Crystal Palace it was off to the Grand Floridian for the Disney Fairytale Wedding Expo.

Wow, looks like you really made up for lost time and made the most of F&W. I could so go for some proseco or Stella right about now ; ) We were big fans of the shrimp taco too.

You guys look great for Dapper days. Can't wait for more...

Hello again! I've been slammed at work the last few weeks with quite a few nighttime obligations that have slowed my ability to get some updates out. BUT, now that those are done, I'm back to continue this dining report. Let's get started, shall we?

We left Magic Kingdom not too long after the park opened, so we were something of a salmon swimming upstream. We took the monorail around the Grand Floridian and then headed toward the convention hall.

As we walked out we ran into Richard and just had to get a picture!

The Disney Fairytale Wedding Expo was a morning of information about having a wedding at Disney. However, here’s the thing, I couldn’t figure out what audience this event was playing to. On the one hand, it was partly for people who might be thinking about a Disney Wedding. Clearly, the problem with this audience is ‘how many people are actually in this group?’. If I were in a relationship, but did not yet have a ring, would not go to an event such as this one. Then, there’s the group of people who are engaged, and are contemplating or planning on having a Disney Wedding. Similar problem with the previous group, how many people would fall into it...enough to host a successful expo? And, finally, you have people who are engaged and set on a Disney wedding, or maybe are already in the throes of planning. This seems like the most obvious group, but once you’ve truly decided and are within the year window the planning begins in earnest and you are given your own specific planner, etc. You begin planning sessions, etc. Does the Disney Wedding Group need to host an event that gives mostly general information to people who have already committed? I don’t know, and after going, I think this was a clear conundrum with the event planners as well.

The event began at 10:00 a.m. in what I can only assume is the largest ballroom available at the Grand Floridian. Sprinkled throughout the room were examples of tables and place settings available for weddings.

The Mad Hatter Tea service is a whimsical arrangement and often used by brides for a rehearsal tea or other bridesmaid event.

An example of a Mad Hatter cake. This is a very popular style of cake where the tiers are askew that is pretty unique to Disney.

The Cinderella Carriage was placed as a centerpiece, enticing brides to add $$ to their day by booking it. There were two food-related stations, located in either corner of the ballroom.

On one side was the hors d'oeuvres station where they had a couple chefs cooking and plating up small portions of entrees and appetizers available for the reception.

The culinary team also had a farm-to-table set-up that has been very popular lately. It had a rustic feel to it and was beautiful. The set-up here had some salads they were making for people as they walked by. We did not partake in any of the food due to our bellies being full from breakfast.

On the other side of the room was cake central.

The tasting portion was 4 different “shooters” of cake and filling for us to sample. Oddly, I don't have a picture of the one I actually tried, which was an apricot mousse. I enjoy apricot flavor and thought this was very good.

This one was dark chocolate with chocolate mousse. Kathy enjoyed this one. I thought it wasn't too rich, which was nice for a non-chocolate lover.

Tequila key lime mousse

White chocolate oreo mousse.

Many of the pastry chefs had also brought full cakes they had decorated to give attendees any number of ideas as to how a cake might be decorated.

There was one pastry chef constantly making sugar flowers. You could take one of these for a souvenir.

This is pastry chef Jade, who specialized here in painting white chocolate characters for use on the cake. She said the white chocolate characters could be preserved for years, so long as you displayed them correctly. I thought these were really fun.

What I can only describe as "your Frozen option"

In the center of cake central was a table with mini cakes outlining the various options couples have for individualized dessert.

Although Disney has about 16 different types of cakes and fillings, the pastry chefs said there was some leeway with flavors dependent on what you wanted. For example, lemon cake is an option, but blueberry filling is not. The pastry chefs said they would be able to do the blueberry filling if a couple requested it.

The thing that got the biggest buzz at the Expo, and has been released since to the general public, was the introduction of the projection wedding cake.

It is 5 tiers and looks incredible. Basically, this is a mini version of the castle projection show...on your wedding cake! I am unsure of how it is done, but the wedding coordinators said they could do any number of projections.

We saw a projection of the Cinderella carriage and horses trotting around the cake, as well as a fireworks projection. It was really cool to see in person. I don’t remember how much that baby costs, but it’s definitely a pretty penny. As I mentioned above, the cake must be 5 tiers, but the coordinators said you could do as few as 2-3 and they would finish the others off as fake tiers.

During the course of the event there were 2 sessions you could sign up for and learn about different aspects in detail. We went to both. One was photography and floral and the other was about food. We thought the food one was much better than the photography, but that could also be because we just like food better. Either way, they did a great job with the food presentation.

Basically, they outlined many of the different options for reception dinners, and went over some of the pros and cons to each. They spent much of the time discussing buffet versus plated. Throughout the event, they also discussed how the culinary team works with the couple to ensure their tastes and ideas are implemented into the day. Anything you want to make happen can happen, they said. The chefs even noted that they could make your grandmothers famous recipe if you desired, so long as you had a recipe to give them. I thought that comment really centered in on what makes a Disney wedding so unique.

Here is a picture of the team giving the presentation.

Once the expo itself ended, we were signed up for An Afternoon of Food & Wine Tasting. That will be my next post. Thanks for reading!

The expo ran from 10-2, but once the expo itself ended they also had another event called ‘An Afternoon of Food & Wine Tasting’. We had signed up on the website. Okay, so I fully admit that when I read ‘tasting’ I expected a tasting. Like, Food & Wine style tasting with small portions. Apparently, in Disney Wedding World, their idea of tasting is 6 courses served Victoria & Alberts style! Here we go.

Our Afternoon of Food & Wine was scheduled to take place at 2:30 in the Whitehall room and patio. It is a popular venue for a small reception because the patio offers a (somewhat obstructed) view of the fireworks in the evening. We checked in and were directed to the patio for mingling and relaxing prior to them opening the doors.

Immediately, we were also offered a glass of bubbly. It was light and refreshing. There were maybe 40 people milling about the patio, so it was a small gathering.

At 2:30, the team opened the doors and we were brought into the dining space. They offered us a hot towel on the way in. There were 4 round tables set for about 10 people each.

Kathy and I were seated with 4 other groups and her wedding consultant! She had saved a seat next to her for Kathy, which we thought was really sweet. It was Kathy’s first time meeting her in person and we enjoyed chatting with her about her job, experiences, and weddings.

As soon as Kathy and I sat down we noticed the menu placard on the plate and looked at each other like, ‘uh, I did not realize it was going to be this fancy and extravagant’. No matter, we were decently hungry and ready to begin.

The event itself was hosted by Cambria wines and included the services of a Master Sommelier as well as an Executive Chef. Both were on-hand to explain to us what we were tasting and how they worked together.

We started the event with a soup and a Viogner wine pairing. The soup was a Cold Water Lobster & Cognac Bisque en Croute. Oh my heavens, this was one of the best soups I have ever tasted in my life. The soup was creamy with a distinct lobster flavor and the buttery crust just gave it that extra decadence. This must have been the soup that Elaine mentions in Seinfeld during the “yada yada’ episode. I tried not to eat all of it, but I’m pretty sure I downed the whole bowl.

The soup was paired with a Cambria Tepusquet Vineyard Viogner. I don’t have a lot (read: any) experience with wine pairings and how they are supposed to work or how you know when something works versus when it doesn’t. However, I distinctly remember thinking to myself after tasting the Viogner that ‘this is an interesting pairing. It really works, but it’s somewhat surprising’. Imagine my surprise when the Somellier says almost the exact same thing when he describes how the two should be perceived. He said you should be pleasantly surprised that the piring works so well and it should beckon you to try it again. You sir, nailed it.

Our next course was the salad. The menu card read: Rocket & Petite Greens Salad, Gorgonzola Frosted Pecan Cupcake, Roasted Clementine, Sriracha Pickled Radish Macerated Tomatoes with a Lingonberry Vinaigrette. Phew! That’s quite the mouthful. It was paired with Cambria Katherine’s Vineyard Chardonnay. I thought this salad was creative and playful with a ton of different flavors going on (as if you couldn’t ascertain that idea from the title…). Kathy’s consultant said she helped choose the menu and her favorite item on the entire menu was that cupcake. As a blue cheese fan, I saved that baby for last. The Sriracha radishes were tasty with an end kick you would expect, but in the end, it was a salad. The Gorgonzola cupcake was a savory style cupcake and as odd as it sounds, worked wonderfully. The frosting was thick with the tang you would expect from a gorgonzola. You definitely didn’t need more than you got, but what I received was perfect. I am not a Chardonnay drinker, so I wasn’t looking forward to this one. The Chardonnay wasn’t awful, but it wasn’t my favorite of the day, either. Kathy is also not a Chardonnay drinker, so unfortunately I do not have an opinion from a fan to give you on the wine. I’m sure it was delightful.

The next plate up was the fish course. The menu reads: Pan Seard Mahi Filet w/ Early Fall Squash and Sweet Corn Saute with an Orange Saffroon Beurre Blanc. It was paired with the Viogner from before. One of unique aspects I want to point out here is that the chef was personable when he described the food. For example, he would say ‘beurre blanc’ and then explain that the phrase is just a fancy way of saying wine sauce. He helped to bring the fancy terms down to a level that couples who are not foodies could understand for purposes of planning that I found helpful. The fish course was light and perfectly cooked. I thought the flavors once again paired well together. The Mahi was nice and flaky as well. In tasting the wine, the sommelier pointed out that the Viogner and Mahi was a more traditional pairing where you just felt as though the two worked together, but was not thought-provoking. I again enjoyed the wine.

Our next plate was the entree round. The plate was this: Grilled Filet of Beef with a Wild Mushroom Veal Glace, Herbed Roasted Chicken, Gruyere Cheese, Leeks and Prosciutto with a Raspberry Veloute served with Duchess Potatoes and Crowned Baby Carrots. I am very sorry that I do not have a picture of this actual plate. We dug in and totally forgot to take the picture. However, I do have this picture of a dual chicken/beef entree that gives you an idea of the presentation. Couples choosing a plated dinner have the option of a single or dual entree for the meal. This was obviously an example of the dual entree. It was fantastic. Normally, when you have catered meals the chicken and beef are also overdone. Not so in these plates. The chicken was moist and juicy, while the beef was cooked a medium/medium rare. I kept going back and forth as to which was my favorite. The beef was served more traditionally with a mushroom glace which the chicken had the cheese and prosciutto topper, which, though getting more popular, is still not something you see often. They serve a similar style chicken sometimes at dinners I go to for work and they are always dry and extra salty. This chicken was neither and I very much enjoyed it. The only disappointment of the day was the potatoes. These were just not great. They were a mashed potato-esque style and were kind of bland and meh. The dual entree was served with either the Chardonnay or the Cambria Julia’s Vineyard Pinot Noir. The sommelier jokingly asked how many people were thinking ‘thank God they got to the red wine!’. A few of us raised our hands. I am slowly moving to some white wines, but still generally prefer the reds. This pinot was very light and could be a training red for someone on the opposite spectrum trying to venture into reds. It paired well with the meal.

Our final course was, of course, dessert. The item we received was a Chocolate Hazelnut Dome with Raspberry and Vanilla Bean Sauce. This was paired with the Pinot Noir. I fully admit to not being a huge dessert fan, and very picky about my chocolate. Normally, one bite of a decadent chocolate will keep me satisfied, so I rarely, if ever, order chocolate desserts. They set it down and Kathy commented ‘one bite of this and you’ll be good’. Haha, she was right. It was a decadent end to the day, though the sauce did cut some of the richness from the dome, as did the wine. The chocolate lovers downed this entirely.

After finishing, we said our goodbye’s and got ready for our next adventure. On to Hollywood Studios!

Great update!! I swear I've been married almost 13 years but now I want a Disney Wedding!!!

Great update!! I swear I've been married almost 13 years but now I want a Disney Wedding!!!

What a fun update! I need to get married in Disney!!

I had never really considered getting married at Disney, but man do they give you an incredible sell! There wedding planners make the process for everything seem so much easier because they'll just take care of it. I'm pretty excited to see what Kathy comes up with for her day!

After spending the bulk of the day at the Grand Floridian, Kathy and I were excited to spend some time in a park. We were also antsy to check-out Dapper Day and make use of our fastpasses. Although we had been in Disney more than a day and entered 2 parks, we had yet to board a ride! Crazy, I know. We also had a 7:00 reservation at the Hollywood Brown Derby.

After spending a couple of hours in the park in heels, we learned that Disney World is way too spread out for heels, even on Dapper Day.

Right around 7:00 p.m. we headed over to the Hollywood Brown Derby to check-in for our dinner with the Stars. I was excited to snag this reservation since the Brown Derby is one of my favorite restaurants, plus, what better way to end the evening?? The problem? After our afternoon tasting, we were anything but hungry. We contemplated cancelling, but in the end decided we could at least order a couple of drinks, relax, and take a look at the menu.

We waited a few minutes before they called our name and were led to our table. They dropped off menus and the drink book. This is one restaurant where I think a cocktail just makes sense to start.

I knew exactly what I wanted: the Honey Darling gin martini. Although, I forgot to order it with a twist rather than olive.

Kathy took a little longer to make her decision, but ultimately went with the margarita trio. Kathy received a traditional, mango, and pomegranate margaritas. She thought these were very good. Her favorite was the pomegranate.

While I have never had a bad meal at the Brown Derby, the service is almost always slow (even for a signature) or spotty. Unfortunately, we did not have wonderful service for this meal. It took our waiter a few minutes longer than it should have to initially come over. Perhaps we should have just come out with it and told him we weren’t in a hurry, but let’s be real, we also shouldn’t have to do that! I don’t know if anyone else has experienced this, but when we said we needed a few more minutes to decide it took the waiter an extra long time to come back. I’ve found that true at a lot of places, both inside and outside of Disney. Anyway, we ordered our cocktails and took a look at the menu. HBD had recently turned to their fall menu when we were there. I was sad to see the cioppino is no longer on the menu. I’ve never had it, but I was thinking of ordering it.

Kathy and I contemplated splitting an entree, but we couldn’t find anything we agreed upon. Then we thought about each just going with our own entree, but we weren’t hungry enough for that. We ended up choosing a couple of appetizers to split instead.

The one thing we didn’t have to discuss was the Cobb Salad. We ordered the appetizer size to share. Previously, I’ve read about people saying ‘they just threw the entree on the table and left’ and I didn’t understand what they meant. Well, now I do. The runner literally dropped the salad on the table and left. Kathy and I looked at each other for a good 15-30 seconds unsure of what to do next. We had no clean plates and every time we’ve ever ordered this in the past the waiter has come by right behind the salad and asked if we wanted them to toss and serve the salad. We waited for a few minutes, thinking the waiter was going to come around. After seeing no sign of him we decided they left us to do it ourselves. Of course, as soon as we were done tossing it, the waiter shows up and I, somewhat annoyed, ask if he could please bring us some new plates. He brought us the plates and then began to try to make small talk. I think he realized I wasn’t super happy with him. The salad itself was as wonderful as ever. It has a light flavor dressing that pairs well with the rest of the flavors. It was honestly this salad that first turned my tastebuds on to blue cheese. I love that the salad is finely chopped. Always a winner.

Our first appetizer “entrees” was the andouille-crusted prawn. It was one large prawn, with cheddar grits and ancho oil. The black diamond grits were incredibly creamy and sharp. It paired well with the spicy crust of the prawn. It was sort of difficult to share this, since there is only the one prawn but we managed.

The other appetizer “entree” we ordered was the blue lump crab spring rolls. There were 3 small spring rolls, and as you can see, the one was cut in half, which made it easy to share. These were not as good as the prawn, but still wonderful. It was served with a spicy miso aioli and I could have used a bucket of that stuff. So good. What’s not to love about a spicy asian mayonnaise?? We could also taste the snow crab as the star. We also managed to share the claw served with this.

To finish off the night, both of us ordered the triple dessert. Ugh, seriously HBD, WHYYYYY move to this mini option???? To me it is a huge waste to get a tiny little taster of these things. Give me a whole one! Okay, rant over, sorry.

Kathy chose double creme brulee’s and the banana toffee cake. She thought both were very good and she especially liked the banana toffee cake. The creme brulee was good, but it’s hard to do that dessert justice in such a tiny ramekin.

I went with double blueberry tart and a creme brulee. I totally should have gotten one tart, one creme brulee, and the banana toffee thing. The blueberry tart was good, but a little too tart. there needed to be more of a pastry top rather than just the crumble to help cut the tartness of the blueberrys.

As I mentioned previously, the waiter did try to make more of an effort after our cobb salad arrived. After we received the check he said he forgot to put on the desserts, so he wouldn’t worry about it. I have yet to figure out if he really forgot them or not. Prior to him telling us this, I was seriously contemplating asking for a manager, just to let him know I thought our service was not as we expected, but in no way was I going to ask for anything. Plus, all the food and drinks we had were stellar. I know we will be back, despite our waiters off day.

We, your wedding activities look amazing. And that lunch...now that was a tasting. Inquiring minds gotta know though, did you pay for that or was it included in the wedding planning? If it was the ladder, may have to "plan" myself a disney wedding. Just don't tell my hubby ; )

I can't believe the horrible service at HBB. I would definitely expect more from a signature. At least it was nice and long to give your feet a break. Though your dinner is my favorite way to eat. I love to share multiple apps and get to try different things.

Okay, I didn't actually forget about this review! It's been super slow at work this week, so I took advantage and wrote up the last few updates for it!

The next morning, we decided to spend some time just relaxing and enjoying the hotel. The grounds of the Animal Kingdom Lodge are beautiful and there is a lot to explore.

To start out our morning we had breakfast at the Mara. Kathy and I decided to split 2 items.

First, we picked a cinnamon roll. It was a typical Disney cinnamon roll. I think we probably nuked it for a few seconds to warm it up.

We also decided to split the breakfast flatbread, which was a special that day. It’s a flatbread with sausage gravy, eggs, cheese, and bacon. I love all of those things, so this was a big winner! We loved it. We also found it was the perfect size to share.

After eating our breakfast we headed back to our room and changed into our swim clothes.

It was time to relax at the pool. It wasn’t a sunny day, but still warm and sticky, so the pool was refreshing. Since it was still the morning, it wasn’t very busy either. We were laying in an area near the bar, so when it opened up, Kathy suggested we order a drink.

Kathy decided to get a fruity drink. She said it was very good, and she would order it again.

I went with a Yuengling. For you lucky’s in Florida and parts of the East Coast, this is no big deal. However, Yuengling is only available in about 17 states, so I always try to get one when I’m in Florida. It was just as good as I remember!

While we were relaxing at the pool we began to discuss lunch. That evening we had tickets to Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, but otherwise we didn’t have anything going on. However, we were both thinking the same thing for lunch...Sanaa! It’s one of our favorite restaurants on property and it would have been a travesty to be so close and not take advantage. We did not have ADR’s, so I pulled up MDE and checked to see if there was any availability. Of course, there was, so we picked up an ADR for about 2 hours later.

It was an add-on to the wedding event they held. I believe it was $100 per person. I guess at that price I should have been surprised! Still, we thought it was a good deal. They do "include" a tasting during wedding planning, but Kathy hasn't gotten there yet! I hope it's as fun and decadent!!

After cleaning up and getting ready, Kathy and I made our way over to the Kidani Village for our lunch reservation. We chose to walk from the Jambo House rather than take the shuttle, but both are available. It’s about a 7 minute walk for those of you who walk moderately fast. I checked us in and they gave us a pager and said it would be a few minutes. We took the opportunity to go out and look at the Savannah. We also realized our room looked straight across over to Sanaa! About 10 minutes later our pager went off and we were shown to our table.

I looked and it seems we are missing a picture of the menu, sorry!

We decided to start the lunch off with a glass of wine. I was thinking a white might be nice, and wanted something from Africa, but had no idea where to start. White wine is not my forte! I told this to our server and asked about a Chenin Blanc from South Africa. She then asked if we would like to taste the wine before making a decision? I said yes and she brought out the bottle and gave us each a small taste. We both enjoyed the wine and ordered a glass. I don’t know if this is typical, but it was a really nice that she offered it to us.

We went with an incredibly typical choice of items for this meal. Of course we had to start with the bread service. And of course we chose all the accompaniments, along with the 3 naan’s. I just love the bread service here and find it so fun to mix and match the different flavors. We couldn’t pick our favorites, but I loved the spicier ones, especially mixed with the yogurt sauce. So yummy.

For our entree, Kathy and I chose the same thing: butter chicken and short ribs. This combination is hearty and flavorful, and all around delicious. It’s definitely one of my favorite dishes at Disney. We talked about how we couldn’t decide which one was better, the short ribs or the chicken. I’ve heard they took the short ribs off the dinner options, but that it’s still available for lunch. However, the pdf dinner menu on the WDW website still lists it, so who knows?? It would be travesty to take them off, but if you’re thinking of going to dinner for the short ribs, I would try to check with someone who has been more recently.

This was one of our favorite meals of the trip and Sanaa continues to be on the short list of best restaurants for us. The service was wonderful and we had a great view of the animals from our table.

After lunch we headed to the Magic Kingdom for some rides and to enjoy the park before the party. The weather while we were in Florida was pretty much awful. It was never really sunny and always sort of spitting rain. However, it was one of those rains that you didn’t necessarily need the poncho, so you were always just kind of...wet. I’d much rather have an hour long thunderstorm and get it over with. Well, the party night was no different.

I had been to MNSSHP once, but Kathy had never been, so I got her tickets for her birthday present. She kept watching the parade on YouTube last year, but this year she could see it in person! Or...not. We got a ton of stuff done at MK for the party, and planned to take in the late parade. Luckily, we stopped to watch the headless horseman ride through before the first parade because the 2nd parade ended up being cancelled! There was some heavier rain in the forecast and it started to come down harder than allowable for the performers. We were pretty disappointed, but understand that this is a risk you take for these parties and it wasn’t Disney’s fault. Plus, about 15 minutes later it began to pour, so it was absolutely the right decision on Disney’s end to cancel it. We were still pretty full from Sanaa, so we never ended up stopping to eat dinner. We were going to grab something on our way out, but then it ended up pouring, so we were wet and just wanted to get back to the hotel.

Here are a couple of pictures of the party and one at a candy stop (that counts as food, right? right.). We were in line for Big Thunder Mountain, and while we were in the loading bin the next train came in soaked! The sky opened up and it began to pour! So, one of the pics above is the aftermath of our Big Thunder Drenching!

Trying to get home was an adventure as we ended up waiting nearly an hour for a bus. When we arrived the Animal Kingdom Lodge line was back up all the way to the next bay. Of course, no other hotel had that kind of line. We had fun at the party, even in the rain, but we did not have fun waiting in the cold and rain, after the parade had been cancelled, to get back to the hotel. Being tied to bus service was a reason we hadn't stayed at AKL in the past and it's going to be a big factor in why it will be lower on the list of places to return.

The next morning we got up and headed over to Animal Kingdom, since we hadn’t hit that park yet.

We also started out the morning with another breakfast flatbread since we didn’t have dinner the night before.

We stopped at our favorite show in all of Disney, Festival of the Lion King, to see it in its new theater. We arrived almost at showtime and got a little pixie dust by getting seated in the front row! This led to my being chosen to emulate the warthog for our section. It's the first time that's happened at any show, so I thought I'd share a picture.

Although we love the Flame Tree Barbecue, we passed on that lunch option to head to Epcot for Food & Wine. We just have to hit it as much as possible while we are in town and it’s going on.

When we got to the park our first stop was Hawaii! I love this addition to the Food & Wine Festival and they have some great options as well. We went for the Pork Kalua slider and their signature drink, Aulani Sunset. The pork slider was tender and salty with an added sweetness of pineapple. They also have an aioli on top that brings out an extra depth of flavor. This one continues to be a winner.

The Aulani Sunset is a fruity, tropical drink made with rum. I can only take so much of sweet drinks, so this is good to share for those of you who are similar. We both enjoyed this drink.

Our next stop was Puerto Rico. This little area had a fun little set-up and encouraged people to relax and party. I wish they would make more booths in this style because the extra space was helpful. We ordered the beef stew, the fried plantains, and the sangria. All three were winners here.

The beef stew was almost like a tomato chili that burst with flavor.

The plantains were wonderful, and a good pick if you’ve never had plantains before. The spicy ketchup they served with it paired very well.

The sangria had a plum flavor to it that we really enjoyed. It went down easy. Also, don't mind the hair, haha!

For our next stop we tried Ireland and chose the cheese plate. It was humid outside which made the cheese soft and a little melty. This was not a bad thing! We thought all 3 cheeses were yummy. One in particular (which one I do not know) had a very creamy taste to it that we both enjoyed. This whole board went eaten by us.

We then made our way to France, which has been a perennial favorite for me.

Kathy got the Boeuf Bourgingnon. It is a hearty beef stew on top of whipped mashed potatoes. They have had this for a few years and I thought this years was better than in the past. The gravy had a nice flavor to it and the beef we got was nice and tender.

I always get the escargot and thought the way they did them before was perfect. I’ve gotten them other ways at restaurants and enjoyed them, but the brioche bun, garlic, and escargot was a little bit of heaven. Well, what did France do? They went and put a different spin on my beloved escargot! This was a brick with 3 escargot inside a spinach tart. I was not a fan of either the tart itself or the spinach inside. So, the escargot got dug out and eaten alone.

We also opted for a pomegranate slush, which went down easy as usual. Those things are addictive no matter what flavor they use!

After our adventure at the France booth, we made our way to the back of France for a little sweet treat.

I love the new-ish addition of the ice cream shop in France. The flavors I have tried have all been wonderful and the ice cream is perfection. I definitely recommend. Kathy tried a seasonal option, apple cinnamon. She said it tasted just like cinnamon apples topped with ice cream. I tried it and it was very good.

I got the profiterole. This is basically vanilla ice cream with profiterole's mixed in. There is a distinct flavor to it and you get some nice chunks of profiterole as you eat. It's my favorite.

After all that, we were full from eating our way around Food & Wine!

After France, we explored our way around Epcot a bit before deciding what to do next. Well, no trip to Disney is complete without a trip to our favorite resort, the Polynesian! Plus, it had started raining, yet again. Aaand, we had reservations in Magic Kingdom later that evening, so we thought it would be a perfect time to grab a drink at the bar and to check out the progress being made to the construction.

Upon arriving at the Polynesian, we saddled up to the bar and ordered the only thing one can order when at the tiki bar...a lapu lapu!

These babies are quintessentially Polynesian and taste great. Plus, we always find the bartenders here to be very nice. It was pretty slow when we arrived, but Ohana opened not to soon afterwards and it began picking up. There’s definitely a lot going on at the Polynesian right now, but I am confident it will be great when completed. I like the openness of the new lobby and look forward to seeing it in person soon.

We also found, but did not indulge in, the new Pineapple Lanai. It's nice to have another space dedicated to the dole whips, because the line at Aloha Isle has been getting longer and longer.

Wow, updates galore!

I'm with you on Sanaa and think its one of the best restaurants on property. I have no idea why it doesn't get as much love as it should, but I'm happy the secret still isn't out. And that bread service, pure heaven.

Wow, looks like MNSHP rain was something fierce. Can't believe all that rain and then the long bus wait. Hopefully it was worth it.

MMM, more food and wine. You managed to hit up most of the booths I missed in one fall swoop. I heard Puerto Rico was really good and those plantains looks relish. An oh escargot flatbread...be-still my heart.

Thanks for making me hungry ; )

Great review! Sanaa is at the top of my must-do list. Love the bread service and I always get double Butter Chicken.

Okay, where did we leave off? Ah yes, the bar!

Our next stop is the Magic Kingdom for a reservation I was lucky enough to snag one day. Can’t be anywhere else but...

Be Our Guest! We have had lunch here before, but never had a chance to try dinner. We arrived and the place was packed. They gave us a pager and we took the opportunity to explore the castle.

It was our longest wait for a table, at about 20 minutes.

But once our pager went off we received our Lumiere and were escorted to a table in the Grand Ballroom. They started us off with some warm rolls and butter. I thought the rolls had a nice flavor to them and they were that crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside roll that we love.

Kathy and I each decided to start off the evening with a glass of wine. I’m not sure what white she had, but I opted for a glass of Lasseter wine I’ve heard so much about. It was good, but I don’t know that it was worth the price I paid for the glass!

I started with a cup of the French Onion soup. I must say, I thought this was a very, very good French Onion soup. Made even better knowing it was vegetarian, which I find impressive, since so many are made with beef broth. There was a ton of flavor in this soup and plenty of cheese and crouton. I couldn’t finish it.

I went back and forth for my entree, as I knew the pork was supposed to be very good. It is the dish I ultimately picked. I thought it was good, but not fantastic. I was also not a fan of the cauliflower puree and would have preferred mashed potatoes. My impression was also clouded by Kathy’s pick, which was the winner of the night.

She went with the steak and frites. This was awesome! The strip steak was cooked perfectly medium, as Kathy likes, and had a wonderfully buttery crust. The fries were also fantastic and I wish they served them everywhere at Disney. Actually, I don’t, because I don’t need more fries in my life and they are one item I have no willpower for!

We had a great time at Be Our Guest and thought the meal and the service were wonderful. Our server was present and took care of our table well. We enjoyed the atmosphere of Be Our Guest and will definitely try to get another reservation for dinner in the future. We did not opt for dessert because we had something else in mind.

For dessert we went to the Aloha Isle and grabbed a Dole Whip float! I just love these things and, like many others, make it a point to get one each and every trip. Sometimes it’s hard because there are just so many good snacks to pick from in the World. I find we definitely have to plan out our snacks to make sure we have enough room to actually enjoy them.
