Our surprise May 2011 Trip to AKL - my first PTR! Final Update 5/18!

 I just found your report and I'm joining in.

I have wanted to try Kona since I first saw it mentioned on a dining review like 2 years ago. I can never seem to fit it in though. One of these days though.

AKL looks like such a fantastic resort. We had breakfast at Boma last year so we could scope it out and would love to stay there soon.

I haven't tried Tony's but the bad reviews always scare me off too. It looks like such a cute place though.

yay! Thanks for joining in! I actually was reading your PTR earlier today, I don't think I made it all the way through yet. We've eaten at Kona for dinner once, but would love to try it for breakfast. As my DH always tells me - "It's not like it's the last time we are ever going to Disney World" so maybe when we finally get to stay at the Poly one of these days, we'll get to eat there.

Just read through your PTR so far and everything sounds so good. I definitely want to stay in AKL someday. I think it's a great idea that you are exploring new things this trip...that should be really fun :goodvibes Can't wait to hear more about your other plans!

Hey! i just read your PTR and im getting hungry!:) Congrats on graduating. I am hopefully graduating in december as well with a degree in respiratory therapy and i have already booked a trip at AKV to celebrate so im looking forward to see how your stay went!

Since it's our 4th trip together, we definitely want to try new things! Since we're staying deluxe, we're hoping to spend more time relaxing at the hotel, and stopping to smell the roses in the parks - trying things, mostly shows that we have never stopped to do before. I can't wait! Now if the next 7 weeks of school would fly by, I'd be happy! :)

I cannot wait to graduate! You are in a really tough program as well, good luck to you! AKV sounds like the perfect place to celebrate. I can't wait to plan our next trip after I graduate, we're hoping to stay at the Poly next time.

Aww, thanks for crediting me with your decision to switch to Kona for breakfast! But I guess you may not make it afterall, but if you can...do try to! That tonga toast is out of this world! I didn't make an ADR for our trip next week because I don't know if we were going to be the "early morning" ADR people as you say...but I am soooo tempted to go. I think we'll have to make a late breakfast one day...maybe before we go to Epcot or MK!

You should also try the beignets at POFQ. Since you seem to like pastries like me! You can always take the bus to POFQ, and then take the ferry service to Downtown Disney.

Do tell, what is breakfast pizza? I dont' think I've eaten it!

Looking forward to the rest!

Enjoying your PTR. I am with you about loving to experience the food of Disney and LOVE all the pics!!!! We are going May 29 - June 3. This will be our first visit to The Grand Floridian Cafe and I see you all are going, as well. Cannot wait to see how you like it.
Happy Planning and looking forward to reading more!!! :goodvibes

We had to cancel Kona :( After DH and I looked over our plans for each day, it made more sense to stay at AK. We'll have to try and squeeze in a trip to the Poly to get some tonga toast at Captain Cooks! Those macadamia pineapple pancakes at Kona sound really good though, I can't wait to try them someday. My DH & I (okay it's just me I make us late) try to get to the parks early but it never seems to happen. I'm hoping to turn that around this time! If you can't get an ADR to Kona, you can always try to stop by Captain Cooks - you can get tonga toast until 11 am!

Yes I definitely need to try these beignets. Are they served all day? I'll have to devise a plan to stop there either on the way to DD, or on the way back.

Breakfast pizza is really yummy! We usually make it with just eggs & 2 kids of cheese, we normally use cheddar and mozzerella. Sometimes we'll put chunks of ham or turkey sausage on it. I need to bust out the Disney cook book so I can post the recipe!

I hope you have a great trip with your sisters, I can't wait to read all about it!

Disney World would not have near the appeal for me without all this yummy food! You'll be there right after us! I don't know how I overlooked the Grand Floridian Cafe for past trips, but I am definitely looking forward to it. All the entrees & desserts sound so yummy I don't know what I'll end up eating.

Yeah, you are writing a PTR!!! Loving it so far! Especially since it has been mostly devoted to food so far, my FAVORITE Disney topic!

OK, so here's where I butt in with suggestions:

Sci Fi Dinner- I don't know if it is true or not, but I have heard that burgers are not on the dinner menu but you can ask for them anyway. The pastrami sandwich was good too. Under no circumstances are you to consider ordering the shrimp pasta. That was hands down the nastiest thing I have ever consumed at DW!

Earl of Sandwich- Two things:

The EoS chain is opening a restaurant in Boston Common (in a building that was formerly a public mens restroom). :scared1: I've seen reports on the local news and there is thread about it on the restaurant boards and yes, I did post a totally tasteless comment there! :rotfl:

Hmmm, ways to get from EP to DTD- You could walk through the International Gateway to the Beach Club (about 7 minute walk) then take a bus from BC to DTD, about 20-25 minutes plus wait time for bus. A cab from the BC to DTD would be under $20 with tip. You could also take a bus from the front of the park to one of the DTD resorts then take the boat.

Kona- here's my attempt to kill 2 birds with one stone for you
(BTW, Kona is my favorite breakfast place in the world, not just the World)
Since you can't decide on a CS place on the MK, how about if you hop onto the monorail around 11 am and have breakfast for lunch. You could either OOP Kona, or if you just wanted the Tonga Toast, use CS, a little earlier than 11. We did a Kona "brunch" at 11:15 on our 2010 trip!

Glad to see Tamu Tamu on your list of possibilites- the CS that seems to have a cloaking device around it. People just do not know that it is there! We have had a couple of decent meals there.

That's probably enough from me for now! I look forward to hearing more of your plans.

:welcome: I'm so glad you made it over!! You are so knowledgeable, I knew you'd have a plan for us getting from Epcot to DD since you love the BC so much :)

Oh goodness, I don't know how I didn't notice that the menu for Sci Fi was different for lunch and dinner! You're right, there are no burgers on the dinner menu! We were planning on burgers, onion rings, and shakes there. I hope we will still be able to order it.

Oh goodness, EoS in a former men's restroom?

That's a good idea about "brunch" at Captain Cooks to have some tonga toast. That is a definite possibility for our CS lunch during out MK day.

We've managed to walk by Tamu Tamu on all 3 of our trips to AK, lol. It wasn't until our third trip that we found the Yak & Yeti CS! I'm definitely looking forward to trying Tamu Tamu.

I know that things change, but last year, burgers (while not on the menu) could be ordered for dinner. That doesn't necessarily mean it's still true this year, but there's still hope! :thumbsup2

We loved SciFi, Chefs de France, and Kouzzina (I'm a fan of Cat Cora, so I might be biased :lmao:). We'll be trying Biergarten this year (and I don't care what the reviews say, we'll try Tony's, anyway ). I'm a bit nervous about our possible table-mates at Biergarten, I hope its nice people - but even if they're horrid folks, we won't let them upset our vacation. :cool1:

PS: I'm hopping onboard. Can't wait to read more! :woohoo:

I hope we'll be able to order a burger - if not I'm sure there are other dishes (besides the pasta!) that are delicious enough. I'm definitely excited about all these new places! I'm sure we will eventually try Tony's, but this time the reviews were enough to scare me into the Grand Floridian Cafe  I'm not really nervous about sitting about another family(ies) at Biergarten. We ate at Teppan Edo on our last trip and sat with 2 other families, and it wasn't awkward. Hopefully you don't get anyone horrid sitting with you! :scared1:

I had the steak salad at Sci Fi and it was probably the best salad I had ever eaten (I knew I was getting it before I even booked the ADR last year).

What were the reviews saying about Tony's? I can't change the venue, since this was DH's request, but I am curious. I don't normally read reviews, unless I'm trying to get a better understanding of the restaurant itself ..

We've not tried Teppan Edo, but we do enjoy our local hibachi restaurants. We've had good and bad tablemates (and even realized how small of a world it was when one of our table mates was mom's grade-school boyfriend and his family - she didn't grow up around here). But at least with hibachi, they do pretty well at keeping your focus on the chef instead of your tablemates. I'm not going to worry or stress over it, but I am hoping for the best and preparing for the worst. :lmao:

We ate at Grand FL in 2009, the food was great. That's all I will say about it though. :rotfl2:
