Our Squirrel died...

I think our "pet" squirrel Oliver has died. :(

Oliver was a very friendly squirrel who came to our third story flower box every day to have some food. We would put out seed, nuts, bread, and even small rodent treats (like for gerbils, hamsters)and our window became Oliver's second home.

Our dog would sit at the window barking at him sometimes. Oliver just seemed to ignore him, which was pretty cute. He'd also come right up to the window and press his nose against it when one of us was close by. I think he may have been very curious. Although, now we think it may have just been that Oliver was sick and didn't know any better. :(

The worst thing was last week. It was pouring and before work one day during a downpour, we saw Oliver out eating. He was getting soaked. Chris put out a big box for him to have cover but we thought it was strange that he ventured out in the pouring rain. Squirrels don't typically do that. At least I don't think.

Oliver hasn't been around for about a week. Since a day or two after the rainy day. He used to come every day, several times a day. Very early yesterday while out walking Monty dog, I found a dead squirrel that looked like Oliver on a neigbors lawn. This squirrel looked very much as though he'd died of natural causes. He had the same markings Oliver had. We held out hope that Oliver was not this squirrel, but as the weekend draws to an end and no sign of Oliver, despite fresh food being placed out for him, Chris and I have both agreed, that our adorable Oliver is no more.

Now I just feel awful, like maybe he caught pneumonia or something and it was our fault for putting a constant supply of food out for him. :sad2: I know it's not, but it's just so sad. Seeing Oliver every day was often the best part of a busy hectic workday. He was basically like a pet. Everytime we went to the store we made sure to "get something special for Oliver".

He will be very much missed. :sad1:

Rest in Peace Oliver, may there be many peanuts in squirrel Heaven.

I am so very sorry. I just wanted you to know that I understand.
:grouphug:

We have three squirrels we feed in our backyard -- twirly, whirly and pee pee head (he is constantly trying to pee on our heads). I'm sure you didn't cause Oliver's demise, it was just his time.

They must be so cute (even pee pee head :) ) They have such unique little personalities.

We still have many beautiful birds who visit our window feeding area each day, but Oliver was the only squirrel. :(

EsmeraldaX, if I heard correctly from someone once before, there are indeed many peanuts in squirrel Heaven. Little Oliver is so darn cute.

We have a bevy of squirrels we feed in our yard too, lots of corn.

Oliver is hopping by the bridge now I think, playing with all the other animals.'s

Just this side of heaven is a place
called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet
goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and
play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and
comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those
who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember
them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss
someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and
looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers.
Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs
carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you
cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses
rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once
more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never
absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
Those names are too funny. lol

How wonderful to share you garden with squirrels. We had a vixen and her 2 cubs in our garden last summer. This morning as I opened the blind in the kitchen she trotted right across my back garden and I am not sure who more suprised, me or her.

Thank you all. Dan, that link is wonderful and that poem is beautiful.

Boomdocker - The vixen and cubs must be adorable!

We live in a wooded area and have a squirrel feeder right at our deck. We have so many squirrels that come I can't begin to identify them - except for one that has a chopped off tail - we call him S.Q.
Anyway, today has been very rainy - downpours at times - and I have squirrels at the feeder all day eating corn. Don't feel bad about luring him out in the rain - I think squirrels must not care if its raining. They are out there eating like they are any other day and I bet you'll get another squirrel to come.

I just posted a thread about baby squirrels, and I was looking for it and I found this at the top of the CB!

They are sooo cute arent they?

Awww... I am so sorry to hear that  I am sure you had nothing to do with his death... squirrels around here play out in the rain all the time, so he was just doing what came naturally to him, I am sure :) He looked like a real cutie though

The Rainbow Bridge poem puts a lump in my throat everytime...

I always think of a big backlog of all my pets waiting for me - from my horses to hamsters.

Sorry to hear about your squirrel. You sound like me, I worry about the squirrel babies we have living in our birdhouse!

I'm sorry. I'm sure you had nothing to do with his passing.
My grandma fed squirrels every day for as long as I can remember, they were really fun to watch and fun to listen to her stories about them.

Ahhhhh, he is a sweetie. Sorry about Oliver, I know how much our precious pets mean, we get so attached to them so easily, they are so sweet and innocent.
