Our son has been accepted to both, SCAD and Ringling art colleges...????

Congrats to you and your son!!

I know you mentioned that chase is interested in doing picture book illustration. If that is the case I would recommend that he join an organization called SCBWI. It's the society for children's book writers and illustrators. I know he is just starting college now but I have worked in publishing for the last 15 years, and have first hand knowledge of how a lot of the children's book side works.

Many editors and agents attend local SCBWI conferences and will provide feedback on work both written and illustrated. Editors are always looking for great illustrators.

It will be a while before he has a portfolio ready but I recommend he join sinner rather than later to see what the various chapters have to offer. Many of the children's book illustrators are also animators and do the book illustration on the side. Some, not many but some have been able to then only do book illustration.

Congrats again!

kitzka, we will definitely look into that! Sounds like it would be great for him and something he would like.

Long time, no update but it's been busy with him getting ready to graduate and we have been helping our daughter move some things back home and visiting with her. BUT, we sent the commitment deposit in to Ringling!!!

I had a good talk with him again and he just really feels it's the best place for him and we feel the size will be better. He would love to freelance or something with Disney one day so but if he does not work for Disney, he will be okay with that. He just wants to illustrate and draw and if it's another good company or if it's books or something else, he is great with that too. And we were just more impressed with the Illustration department at Ringling over SCAD. We also feel, if they are good enough and work very hard, then it probably won't really matter if they are at Ringling or SCAD or one of the other top schools. Sooooo, Sarasota bound in August!!! Exciting but scary at the same time. Thanks everyone for your input and support!

A friend of mine who went to Ringling interned with Walt Disney Animation one summer while he was there. Disney definitely looks out for Ringling students. Best of luck to your son!

Welcome to the Ringling family! The company my DD works for just hired yet another Ringling grad as an Intern :goodvibes

Thank you! We are all very excited! And that is great! :thumbsup2

We will go move our dd to Disney for the internship around Aug. 9th (check in for her is the 11th) and then, move our ds on to Sarasota. I want to be able to take a few days with him driving around the area so I feel more comfortable.

Thank you for all of your input and advice!

not sure if you have a hotel booked already for Sarasota but we love the Hyatt Place and can take Bradenton Road to campus, unless you are staying at the friends house. Hit Tiajuana Flats for me..gosh I love that place. Wish they would venture up north.

I started looking into all of that yesterday! I think we've decided to make it our summer vacation so we can explore Sarasota more than we did when we were down visiting the school. We don't want to impose on anyone so will probably rent something. I was looking at maybe one of the little cottages at Siesta Key but I will definitely keep the Hyatt in mind for future trips. I plan on there being more, especially in the winter months here ;)

We will go down there and then drive our daughter to WDW for her check in on the 11th. Then, back to Sarasota and fly out of St. Petersburg (hopefully flights won't get gone).

Will certainly check out TF!! We LOVE Mexican! We also ate at Owen's Fish Camp while visiting and are looking forward to going there again. Bring on any other advice or tips when you feel like it. They are greatly appreciated!

One question I have is, how busy is 41 in the mornings around 7:30? That will probably be the route he goes from the house.

Hi Reesecup. Congrats on the college choice! I don't much about Ringling but I've only heard good things. I live in Sarasota and wanted to give a little advice in the driving. Driving in August will be very different then driving in January. When the snowbirds come it gets a LOT harder to get anywhere in town and the worst (slowest) road of them all is 41. Fortunately I think the roads here are pretty easy to figure out, but your ds should definitely have alternate routes, or just be prepared for the idea that it will take much longer to get to school then you think it should. On a particularly bad day ( it was raining) it took me 45 minutes to go about 4 miles on 41.

Didn't mean to scare you just wanted to give you a heads up, I think this is a really great area to live, you'll love coming here for visits!

Is he N or S of Fruitville Rd?
He will do 41 for a bit and then find a back way lol..Central or Cocoanut depending on how far south he is from campus. Some of the roads are 1 way and prob your usual construction. I know they re-did a ton by the hospital for about 3-4 miles a while back. Once he gets past the downtown area he will be fine. Honestly I think he needs to allow time to find a parking space on campus more than traffic.
As far as stuff to see, enjoy an afternoon at St. Armands Circle, we like to grab lunch at Cha Cha Coconuts, hit the beach for a bit. I like to eat at The Marina too ( O'Leary's Tiki Bar and Grill, not Marina Jack$$$$) Tell your DS to ask about the boat races they do Freshman year....it's a blast. He will more than likely get to go to the Marina for some sketching and the kids get passes to the Jungle Gardens too ( or at least they used to)
Selby Botanical Gardens are pretty to see and the Mote Aquarium is a hidden treasure I think.

Thank you so much. Any advice is greatly appreciated since we will be 11 hours away. Makes me pretty nervous. Plus, he's not had too much driving experience since he was not allowed to have a car at UNCSA (where he went for high school). The house is located close to the Publix; the one where it separates 41 and I think 31. His roommate has been there a year now so I hope he has figured out an alternate drive to when it is real busy. He told us that it gets really crazy in Jan. I can not wait to visit and am just in the process of booking a week at Siesta Key for when we bring him down. A tiny place but a good price! If you think of anything else, just let me know.

OK. So, I have not figured out how to do the mutli quotes in one response, so I apologize.
He will be South of Fruitville. Hopefully, his friend will show him some short cuts.
I can not wait to try all of these restaurants and visit these places! I will tell him about the boat races! I sure wish the students got discounts at Disney since our dd will be there for the first semester for her internship :(

Well, I tried to do the multi in the first response and it did not show up but did in the second?!!! LOL
