Hello. We are very proud that our son has been accepted to both SCAD and Ringling art colleges! Just wondering if anyone has any insight on either.

His goal for many years has been to eventually work for Disney / Pixar. He went away for his last 2 years of high school to concentrate on his art.

We know it's a HUGE dream but we have read a lot of wonderful things about recruitment at both of these colleges.

He's also applying to KCAI. They were very interested in him when they came to his school for their presentation.

Anyway, any insight would be wonderful and I know it's a long shot.
We are so very proud of him though. He's worked extremely hard to reach this point!

Oh, and he's been offered a scholarship so far to SCAD...will see what Ringling and maybe KCAI offer (if any...but we are being hopeful).

I don't know anything about the other two schools, but SCAD is fantastic - I've known several very talented artists who went there and loved it. Good luck to your son!

If I could go back to school it would be to go to SCAD.

Congratulations to your son.

I would check on what credits are transferable. I have heard that if you decide that you don't like SCAD that credits don't transfer? But I don't know if that is true.
My D went to art camp there and enjoyed it

Thank you everyone! He's worked so hard and we are very excited. We have toured Ringling already and was very impressed with the recruitment from Disney/Pixar and those companies he's interested in. And their wall of fame was incredible with posters of all the Disney/Pixar/DreamWorks, etc. movies the alumni have worked on. We will tour SCAD soon. Can't wait to compare. The nice thing about SCAD is it will be closer to home and a better drive for us. The nice thing about Ringling is it is closer to Disney LOL!! BUT, SCAD is not that far from Disney either ;)

SCAD is Savannah College of Art and Design. Great little city!

There is a regular poster here on the Dis. FinFan
Her DD attended the Ringling School in Sarasota. She would have a lot of insight.

Congrats!

One of my best friends in high school was accepted to both SCAD and KCAI. She chose SCAD because she loved the feel of the school, the opportunities it would present her with, and because of its fantastic reputation. She also hopes to one day work at Disney/Pixar, if that helps! Congratulations to your son!

My younger DD is a freshman at Ringling; she loves it. The cost is prohibitive probably the only downside.

She also applied at KCAI & Cal Arts but not SCAD; she wanted Computer Animation and Ringling is one of the top schools. They do have a great recruiter list; hopefully that will work out for her in a few years.

The advantage to KCAI was it's fine arts program; she would still like to minor in fine arts but Ringling discourages anyone in Computer Animation from having a minor. It is a pretty rigorous program.

Finfan will probably post; her daughter is a recent graduate and has had some fantastic success with her senior project (animation short).

I work with lots of graduates of SCAD, wanted my son to go but it's WAY out of my price range~:scared:

SCAD in Atlanta is right down the block from my job, I love seeing the student's work all up and down the area. My closest co worker graduated back in the 90s and is still b'ing and m'ing about her loans, hope he gets a good scholarship! :thumbsup2

My cousin graduated from KCAI. He currently lives in NYC and does work for Marvel, Cartoon Network and this week he did some work on the Deadpool comic. His work has been in Spin and Mad magazines. I don't think he ever wanted to work for Disney, he is way more comic book artist (obviously!). He does pretty well for himself and he is currently working on something that could be huge, but I'm sworn to secrecy! ;) Of course, it could also not go very far too, he doesn't want to get his hopes up. My DD wants to go into art also and we would like her to stay closer to home and there is a college here the Creative Center College of Art & Design that we are hoping she'll get into. It's also very expensive, but they do graduate with a bachelors in 3 years. Good luck to your son! How exciting!!

Check with the Career Center for all schools and see which companies recruit at the school...as for specifics (ie do they come every year?)

Congrats!

Thank you all so very much!! Yes, I think I've actually talked to FinFan before when he was just interested. I probably talked too much and got on her nerves! ha

For a long time CalArts was THE one he wanted. BUT, he wants to actually do character design and concept art instead of full animation and they concentrate mainly on the animation. He wants to major in Illustration. He thought about applying there as well though. I believe both Ringling and SCAD have wonderful reputations with the recruitment. KCAI does as well just maybe not as much with Disney/Pixar, etc. but not sure. He is open to other companies and is interested in Cartoon Network as well as doing illustrations for children's books! I guess we will wait and see what possible scholarships he can get because, yes, it is pricey for us as well! We just hope he gets enough because again, he's pretty much given up everything to pursue this dream of his!

I'll update you all after we visit SCAD. He has two friends there and one friend at Ringling so he's kind of being pulled. (oh, and another at KCAI). We also have a family acquaintance who's daughter will graduate from SCAD this year and she has said it was the best decision she's ever made. Lots of alumni from Ringling who work on Disney projects. Their "wall of fame" of all the alumni work was so impressive. Aaron Blaise is one. He worked on Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas and many, many more. He does a lot of drawings of animals. His work is phenomenal!!

Thank you all again for your support. It's a very exciting time!

Congratulations to you and your son! That is quite an accomplishment that he got a great scholarship from SCAD. I live about an hour from Savannah and see the SCAD students often there. The area that SCAD is in use to be so run down and shady but since SCAD expanded, it is a very nice area and not scary at all. My DS goes down there once a week for a Masters class with GSU. Savannah is a great city to live in and I think he would definitely enjoy being there. There is so much to do and many things are within walking distance to the SCAD area.

I have family in Sarasota and they said Ringling is the pathway to Disney. I don't know anything about SCAD but if Disney was my goal, I think I'd go there.
